    The purpose of this study was to analyze the growth process of main characters in contemporary initiation novels step by step according to the patterns of growth motives extracted from the contemporary initiation novels. In order to set criteria for analyzing the contents of initiation novels, we categorized the patterns of growth motives. In addition, we examined individual books describing the maturing process of immature main characters in long stories selected from Korean creative initiation novels published since 2000.
    Growth motives were categorized into five patterns <confusion of family identity>, <awakening to sex>, <sense of inferiority>, <experience in violence>, and <setting out on a journey>, and 10 books were used as criteria for analysis. The books are common in that the main characters are adolescents at the growth stage, and they also help the growth of their surrounding people and the readers. In this sense, initiation novels are found highly valuable as reading materials for adolescents.
    What are most remarkable among several characteristics of contemporary initiation novels are the reflection of various types of family and the main characters active response to established order. In addition, they suggest adolescents worries about their future course. In addition, initiation novels emphasize helpers role in establishing the establishment of adolescents new world view. Thus, this study closely analyzed changes in the main characters of contemporary initiation novels according to whether to have helpers and the importance of the helpers roles. By analyzing and summarizing these contents, we presented the concepts and characteristics of initiation novels.

    본 연구는 청소년기의 성장을 다룬 현대 성장소설에서 추출한 성장모티브 양상에 따라 청소년 주인공의 성장과정을 단계적으로 분석하는 것을 주내용으로 하고 있다. 성장소설 내용의 분석 기준을 마련하기 위해 성장모티브 양상을 범주화하였다. 그리고 이 모티브들을 추출하기 위해 2000년 이후 출간된 국내 창작 성장소설 가운데 장편소설만 대상으로 하여, 미성숙한 주인공이 성숙해가는 과정을 그린 도서를 일일이 검토하였다.
    성장모티브는 <가족정체성 혼란>, <성에 눈뜸>, <열등감>, <폭력체험>, <길 떠남> 등 모두 다섯 가지로 집약되었고, 10편의 선정도서를 분석의 기준으로 활용하였다. 각 도서의 주인공들은 성장기에 있는 청소년이라는 공통점을 지니고 있으며, 본인의 성장뿐만 아니라 주변인물과 독자의 성장을 돕는 역할을 하고 있다. 이런 점에서 성장소설은 청소년 독서 자료로서의 가치 또한 높은 것으로 밝혀졌다.
    현대 성장소설에서 나타나는 여러 가지 특징 가운데 가장 눈에 띄는 점은 다양한 가족형태의 반영과 기존질서에 대응하는 주인공들의 적극적인 태도를 들 수 있다. 그리고 청소년들의 진로탐색에 대한 고민이 구체적으로 제시되어 있다. 또한 성장소설은 청소년들의 새로운 세계관 확립을 위해 조력자의 역할이 중시되는 장르인데, 현대 성장소설에서도 조력자 유무 및 역할의 경중에 따른 주인공의 변화들이 면밀히 검토되었다. 이들 내용을 분석, 종합하여 성장소설의 개념과 특징을 함께 정리했다.
