This study was conducted to analyze middle and high school students' levels of understanding and misconceptions regarding the states of atoms, molecules, and matter using conceptual assessment items developed by AAAS. It also aimed to examine differences based on school level and gender. For this purpose, the "Matter and Atomic Molecular Theory" assessment items developed by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS, Project 2061) were translated and administered to a total of 641 students—8th and 11th graders in South Korea. The translated items were validated for reliability and appropriateness through Rasch analysis. Student responses were analyzed by investigating the frequency of responses per item according to achievement levels, and t-tests were conducted to examine differences by school level and gender. The analysis revealed generally low correct response rates and strong tendencies toward misconceptions on items that required particle-level explanations of molecular motion, temperature changes, and phase transitions. Representative misconceptions included: "Particles in solids do not move," "Matter disappears when it evaporates," "Water molecules are destroyed during boiling," and "The number of particles increases when heat is applied." These misconceptions were mostly found in the conceptual areas of matter conservation and phase change, with a strong tendency to confuse particle distance and motion. Furthermore, high school students showed significantly higher correct response rates than middle school students overall, and female students demonstrated a higher level of conceptual understanding compared to male students. However, in certain items, intuitive thinking and sensory-based judgment interfered, resulting in no significant differences based on school level or gender. In some cases, a high rate of entrenched misconceptions was observed regardless of educational experience. This study provides empirical evidence of differences in conceptual understanding based on school level and gender, and serves as foundational data for effectively diagnosing and correcting misconceptions in science education. It also offers practical implications for the improvement of concept-based curricula and the design of customized instructional strategies.
