This paper addresses the characterization of anisotropic material properties for additively manufactured material by binder jetting. Additive Manufacturing(AM) has many advantages to realize a complex shaped components compared with traditional manufacturing methods. The binder jetting method(BJT), an efficient AM process with metal powders, is being focused for the mass-production and the industrialization due to its high productivity. It is important to precisely characterize the material properties and the FE modeling as reliable simulation results are required in component designs and production processes. Materials additively manufactured by binder jetting shows significantly different material behavior regarding the process variable such as the sintering temperature. Furthermore, the BJT material has the anisotropy that material properties vary according to the orientation from the building direction. Therefore, it is essential to acquire appropriate process variables and to evaluate anisotropic material properties in detail. In this study, the target material was selected with SUS316L, austenitic stainless steel. To propose a proper set of process variables, the sintering temperature which is a key-factor to control the material density, was mainly addressed with different conditions of 1150°C, 1250°C and 1350°C. The relative density was analyzed from the sintered materials at various temperatures. Specimens were fabricated along 0°, 45°, 90° from the building direction to perform material tests considering the anisotropy. Tensile tests were carried out at the quasi-static strain rate of 0.001/s to investigate directional properties with regard of the sintering temperature. Microstructural study in as-sintered and fractured samples was then conducted to determine an appropriate sintering temperature. Two different post-processing methods with the isostatic pressure were applied to the as-sintered materials to achieve higher relative density. After the post-processing, changes in the relative density and the material properties were evaluated through the measurement of the density and the mechanical testing, respectively. An appropriate set of process variables including the post-processing was proposed to control the material properties for industrial purposes. To identify the asymmetric properties of porous materials sintered, compression tests were conducted to compare the material behaviors in uniaxial tension and compression. The complex deformation behavior of the BJT material was characterized with a constitutive equation containing the yield function and the hardening law. For the hardening, various hardening equations were examined to find out the best-fit model. A representative advanced yield function was employed to describe both anisotropy and asymmetry. The defined constitutive equation was then validated by comparing experimental and FE simulated results of bending tests. The FE simulations were conducted with the isotropic and the anisotropic constitutive equations to predict the deformation in the bending test. The FE result with the anisotropic constitutive law shows a good agreement with the experiment. It is noted that the advanced constitutive equation is necessary to obtain reliable simulation results. The material modeling technique for the BJT materials would be useful for extension of application of the binder jetting process in many industries.
