The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of workers who attend graduate school on the expansion of knowledge sharing network in company. As the modern society is transformed into the knowledge-based society, a number of efforts are being made by companies to gain easily knowledge and share effectively such knowledge with members. Companies, however, should note that the knowledge is mostly shared by persons not by system. Therefore, in order to promote the knowledge sharing, companies need to examine the aspect of relations established by members with others. Namely, companies need a viewpoint of knowledge sharing network to examine overall of in-house social relations.
In this study, the viewpoint of knowledge sharing network focused to workers of companies who entered graduate school. We examined the effects of workers who attend graduate school on the expansion of network of knowledge sharing in company. It was to verify that the support system for graduate school provided by company contribute to the expansion of knowledge sharing in company. Form this system that the company help its workers with tuition, such workers themselves have the benefit of tuition and degree. But, it was not yet sufficiently discussed if the company itself benefits from this system. That’s why in this study, we introduced the view point of expansion of knowledge sharing network in the company and investigate the benefit of supporting workers for graduate school to the innovation of knowledge sharing in the company.
Based on such study proposal, the questions are given as follows.
Is there change in satisfaction with personal relations by workers after having entered graduate school?
Do such worker-graduate students play the role as knowledge bridge between company’s network and graduate students’ network?
What effect, through the role of knowledge bridge, do such worker-graduate students have on the knowledge innovation of the company?
To investigate these questions, we chose 10 worker-graduate students and 75 members of A company that they belong to and 107 members of B university that they belong to, 172 members in total. 10 overlapped worker-graduate students were excluded. To find the answer to each question, we conducted a survey for the first question, investigated networks for second question and carried out interviews for third question. As the network result could be possibly different depending on the network type, we classified the network types into three: Friendship, Information and Trust, in order to obtain accurate results. As to evaluation of role as knowledge bridge, ‘density’ representing the degree of connection among members and ‘structural hole’ representing the non-overlapped relations were selected, and Netminer4 was used for analysis.
The results of this study are summarized as follows:
First, the result showed that the personal relations of worker-graduate students changed positively after they have entered graduate school. The score for the question “did the personal relations change positively after graduate school entrance?” was 3.85 out of 5 points.
Second, the result showed that worker-graduate students played the role as knowledge bridge between company’s network and graduate students’ network. It was confirmed that the density of company’s network decreased and the structural hole decreased, due to graduate students’ network.
First of all, in all network types (Friendship, Information and Trust), the density of company’s network was higher than that of network connected between company and graduate students. The analysis result confirmed that the difference of two groups was significant. This means that the knowledge sharing network of company was expanded by knowledge bridge of worker-graduate students, so the company carried out exchange with more members and therefore gained various knowledge accordingly.
Next, in all network types, the structural hole of company was lower than that connected between company and graduate school. The ANOVA test using QAP confirmed that the difference of two groups was significant (Friendship network F=1.2856, p<0.05; information network F=1.278, p<0.05; and trust network F=1.23, p<0.05). Especially in case of Friendship network, the restriction values of two groups were identical in descriptive statistics, but significantly different in inferential statistics. It means that the company not only gained first new knowledge by knowledge bridge of worker-graduate students, but also shared it more effectively with members.
Third, the result confirmed that worker-graduate students share various information related to organization, duties and roles rest in the company throughout break time and work hours and direct inquiries. This means that worker-graduate students not simply personally possessed knowledge that they gained from graduate school, but shared it with member of organization. Thus, they contributed to the innovation of knowledge sharing in the company.
The implications of this study results are as follows:
First, learning in graduate school of workers contributes to the expansion of knowledge sharing network as well as their own learning. It is suggested that worker-graduate students accumulate their own academic knowledge, but also expand the network by exchanging such knowledge with members.
Second, the company needs to apply the support system for graduate school from the viewpoint of network. The company should not mechanically apply such support system, but should operate the most efficiently so as to contribute to knowledge sharing and innovation through analytical approach for network of organization.
Third, the company should encourage worker-graduate students to share the knowledge obtained from the outside at the organizational level. It is required to draw up measures for worker-graduate students to share actively various information that they gain from graduate school, not holding it only for them.
