With the issue of aging populations troubling societies around the world, elderly individuals are becoming an increasingly important resource in philanthropic activities. In fact, when it comes to engaging in philanthropic
activities giving back to one’s society, participation levels among the elderly are much higher than that of any other age group. According to a report from the Community Chest of Korea, the greatest amount of total estimated personal donations in 2017 came from elderly communities. Despite this important role of the elderly in philanthropic activities, there is still a lack of existing studies focusing on such acts by this social group.
This study, as an extension of research on philanthropic activities among the elderly, aims to provide academic basic data on the impact of affecting the decision of individuals to engage in different philanthropic activities and give back to their communities. The results of this study not only demonstrate the elderly population is an important source of philanthropic activities, but also indicate better understanding of the unique characteristics of this age group in the Republic of Korea. Furthermore, by exploring from various capitalist perspectives that impact the decision among elderly individuals to give back to their society, this study provides crucial, fundamental data for promoting such actions among this population group.
For the purpose of this study, data was from the annual Seoul Survey, from the year 2018. From the 42,991 total household members who responded to the survey, the experimental group was narrowed down to 12,476 elderly individuals aged 60 or older. As for the research model, the dependent variables for the study were divided into four categories: no philanthropic activities, philanthropic activities through donations only, philanthropic activities through volunteer work only, and philanthropic activities through both donations and volunteer work. For each of these variables, a multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the impact of the independent variable.
The significant results of the study were as follows: First, when reviewing the distribution of philanthropic activities by type, 7,675 individuals (61.5%) did not engage in any philanthropic activities, 3,769 (30.2%) in
donations, 242 (1.94%) in volunteer work, and 789 (6.3%) in both donations and volunteer work.
Second, using the group that did not engage in any philanthropic activities as the reference group, the results of the multinomial logistic regression analysis in comparison with the other groups was as follows: First,
when compared to the reference group, economic capital (+), human capital (+), cultural capital (+), psychological capital [happiness index (+)], age (+), and political party affiliation (+) were the distinct variables that significantlyimpacted one’s probability of being part of the group that engaged in donations. Next, economic capital (+), social capital [trust (+), fairness (+)], cultural capital [number of times having visited cultural facilities (+), religiousness (+)], marital status (-), were the distinct variables that significantly impacted one’s probability of being part of the group that engaged in volunteer work. Finally, economic capital (+), human capital (+), social capital [trust (+)], cultural capital (+), gender (+), and attitude toward
vulnerable or disadvantaged groups in society (+) were the distinct variables that significantly impacted one’s probability of being part of the group that engaged in both donations and volunteer work.
The results of this study are significant in that they provide academic basic data comprehensively identifying the impact of various types of capital in the engagement of the elderly in philanthropic activities, outline the unique characteristics of Korea’s elderly population in the philanthropic activities by comparing differences with the results of existing overseas other domestic studies, and supplement existing studies on the engagement of the elderly in philanthropic activities, which were mainly focused on volunteer work. This
study also emphasizes the need to design more structured and future studies to consider in economic capital, cultural capital, sociodemographic factors, subjective preferences, and other factors that have been shown to impact the engagement of the elderly in social contribution.
