    Human beings can experience various aspects of livings through the literary works which reflect their lives. Accordingly, the purpose of literature education does not just to present various literary works of the other ages to learners, but to get them to understand diverse aspects of livings through voluntary reception and creative activities.
    The classical poetry expresses the universal emotions of our ancestors' livings by means of songs. But learners feel difficulties in understanding the classical poetry owing to the gap of time and language, and they recognize it as an object of memory work for examination not the literary works. Besides, even teachers tend to teach just annotation-based interpretation or background knowledge rather than a proper appreciation of the literary works.
    As a result, this study investigated the method of classical poetry education at the middle school in order to overcome its problems and practice learner-centered education which corresponds with the objective of the 7th national curriculum. Thus, the researcher chose the works such as <Seodong's songs>, <Gasiri>, <Snow falling in Mountain village...>, and <Weeding and Plowing Fields...> included in the Korean language textbook of middle school in the 7th national curriculum to study several teaching methods suited to the characteristics of the works.
    First, it examined the characteristics in terms of genre carried in the textbook, because it is the knowledge of the characteristics in terms of genre before reading the works that forms the foundation in appreciating and understanding the relevant works.
    Given that the purpose of classical poetry education is to get us to introspect the livings of today by experiencing the aspects of livings, spirits, and aesthetic consciousness of our ancestors through the understanding and appreciation of the works, a priority should be given to the teaching and learning method utilizing various programs for teachers so that learners might be familiar with and interested in the literary works.
