This study polled students of the department of nursing science and social welfare to serve demented patients that are social issues in an aging society. Also, it is a descriptive research conducted to provide basic resources for a production course and a program by identifying knowledge, attitude, and recognized service requirements for dementia concerning the students.
Study subjects were 451 current students in the department of nursing science and social welfare in four-year university at J-do. As for study tools, dementia management center located in Seoul (2010) has been used for dementia knowledge, while a tool developed by Hyunoh Cho (1999) has been used for dementia attitude. In addition, a tool developed by Jin Ha (2003) and Maengje Cho (2008) has been used for demand for dementia service after screening duplicated parts.
Datum have been collected from October 1st to 20th in 2012, and analyzed by using SPSS/WIN 20.0 program after being collected.
Major results of this study are as follows.
1. Socio-demographic characteristics of this study's subjects had 94.1% and 74.6% of women ratio in the department of both nursing science and social welfare, and the average ages of both group were 20.43±1.69, 22.34±6.77. As for the religion, two groups had 54.7% and 61.3% of people believing in Christianity. As for characteristics of dementia, a case of responding 'I know' on a degree of dementia knowledge was 82.4% and 69.2% on both groups, and a case of responding 'I have been educated' on an experience of education was 57.0% and 27.7% on both groups. In a question of asking whether they know Long Term Care Insurance for the Aged Act or not, a case of responding 'I do not know' was turned out to be 54.7% and 36.4% on both groups, and a case of responding 'family members or relatives' on a question of asking the relationship of supporter and care attendants was 42.0% and 43.4%. In addition, a place where they prefer to take their family members with dementia to the most was turned out to be 'general convalescent hospital for the aged' in 32.9% and 30.9% on both groups.
2. A degree of knowledge of study's subjects in dementia was significantly higher in the department of nursing science than social welfare (p<.001), and knowledge in each grade from both groups in the department of nursing science and social welfare was not significantly high.
3. The attitude of study's subjects on the dementia was positive. In case of the department of nursing science, freshmen had the most positive attitude, but there was no significant disparity on each grade. As for the department of social welfare, seniors had the most positive attitude with a significant difference on each grade (p<.05).
4. As for recognized service requirements of dementia from test subjects, the department of nursing science showed the highest demand among seniors without significant disparity on each grade. In case of the department of social welfare, seniors also had the highest demand with significant disparity on each grade (p<.01).
5. The correlation between knowledge and attitude of dementia from students in the department of nursing science and social welfare was turned out to be significant (r=-.260, p<.01), (r=-.344, p<.01), and the attitude of dementia seemed to be more positive as a degree of knowledge in dementia was higher. In addition, there was a significant correlation (r=-.366, p<.01), (r=-.404, p<.01) between attitude in dementia and entire service requirement, and a degree of service requirement seemed to be higher as they had more positive attitude in dementia.
In conclusion, it showed that the attitude in dementia was more positive as a degree of knowledge in dementia was higher, and recognized service requirement for dementia was higher as the attitude in dementia was more positive. Since the attitude in dotards is more positive as a degree of knowledge in dementia is higher, it is an important issue to develop curriculum and courses of the education. Therefore, it requires to develop education contents and programs for students to build a positive attitude in dotards by strengthening the education in the fields of psychology, sociology, policy, and the system as well as physical and physiological aspects that can improve a degree of knowledge in preparation for curriculum and courses of education for dementia. In addition, a higher degree of demand on the service for dementia implies the necessity of diverse policies for health-care service is also high. Therefore, it is assumed that various health-care services should be developed and expanded for dotards.
