Due to the rapidly aging population around the world, the need for chronic disease management has increased and interest in healthcare services that incorporate IT technology is increasing. In Korea, the usefulness of mobile healthcare using smartphone apps that can be easily used by the elderly is being raised. However, due to the complex GUI and various new features provided by healthcare apps that failed to take into account the characteristics of the elderly, the burden on the use of apps is rather increasing. Therefore, in order for the elderly to utilize mobile healthcare apps to effectively manage chronic diseases and health, improvements in GUI design considering the characteristics of the elderly are needed. This study aims to organize GUI design methods according to the characteristics of the elderly, analyze existing mobile healthcare apps, improve design by utilizing them, and verify usability improvement through usability evaluation.
To improve the design of mobile healthcare apps for the elderly, this work combines literature research and case analysis with experiments and validation. First of all, I analyzed the design guide in the mobile GUI design research literature considering the characteristics of the elderly, and summarized the design guidelines to be applied to GUI design improvement.
And I selected a mobile healthcare app to be evaluated, analyzed it, and applied the design guidelines that I organized earlier to improve it.
Furthermore, I verified usability improvement with improvements by analyzing the results of the evaluation and evaluation of existing and improved apps.
Through literature studies, I find that GUI design guidelines for the elderly must take into account the physical characteristics of the elderly and can derive design guides according to UI design components. I found from case analysis that the GUI of the targeted mobile healthcare app consists of a complex structure and an uncomfortable interface for the elderly to use.
Therefore, I found that the usability of the improved app was improved by improving the design of the case-analyzed app using the previously derived design guidelines, and by evaluating the usability of the target app and the improved app. Through this, I present that the mobile GUI design guidelines considering the characteristics of the elderly are a valid way to improve the GUI design of mobile healthcare apps for the elderly.
This work aims to improve the design of mobile healthcare apps for the elderly and verify usability through usability evaluation. To this end, literature studies, case analysis and usability evaluation were conducted, and the results showed that mobile GUI design guidelines considering the characteristics of the elderly could be effectively utilized as a tool to improve GUI design of mobile healthcare apps for the elderly. This study is expected to be applicable to the design methods of various apps used by the elderly as well as healthcare apps in the future, and can be used to derive improvement measures through them.
