The purpose of this study is to develop a scale to measure library anxiety in the elderly in order to investigate the effect of library anxiety factors on senior citizens’ intention to revisit the library. The result is as follows:
First, before developing a scale for library anxiety in the elderly, “library anxiety factors in the elderly” were created, and items for each factor were set by analyzing Korean and international scales for library anxiety through literature research. The suitability of the scales was verified using the Delphi method by a group of library and elderly welfare experts. Finally, this study developed a scale for library anxiety in the elderly consisting of 38 items in six categories including “library use knowledge,” “library infrastructure,” “library staff,” “digital literacy,” “psychological aging,” and “communication.”
Second, exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and discriminant validity analysis were performed by surveying senior citizens who had used public libraries in order to examine the relationship between the scale for library anxiety in the elderly, which was developed by analyzing major scales related to library anxiety at home and abroad and having an expert group verify the suitability, and intention to revisit the library.
Third, the hypothesis based on “the relationship between library anxiety factors in the elderly and intention to revisit the library” was reviewed. As a result, it was found that library anxiety factors including “digital literacy,” “library staff,” and “communication” had an effect on the intention to revisit the library. In other words, the higher the anxiety over digital literacy, library staff, and communication, the lower the intention to revisit the library; among the factors, communication showed the highest effect.
Fourth, an analysis was performed depending on the demographic characteristics by the factor and scale. As for the difference in library anxiety and intention to revisit by sex, male seniors showed higher anxiety in library infrastructure, digital literacy, library use knowledge, communication, and psychological aging, while female seniors had higher anxiety in library staff. When it comes to the difference in library anxiety and intention to revisit by age, the older, the higher the library anxiety. In terms of educational background, the elderly with a higher education level showed lower anxiety. In addition, those who used the library more frequently had lower library anxiety. Library use knowledge, which can be shown in their library experience based on the use of frequency, and the scale for library infrastructure revealed that anxiety lowered as the elderly visited the library more.
Based on the above results, this study suggests the following to reduce library anxiety in the elderly:
First, it is required to provide senior citizens with digital literacy education to help them learn how to use various digital media and devices necessary for library use.
Second, it is necessary to train library staff who provide direct library services for senior citizens to increase their understanding of elderly users.
Third, there should be efforts to provide comprehensive library services by organizing and operating organic consultative groups between senior citizens and related institutions in the local community.
Fourth, it is necessary to develop and operate programs where senior citizens are involved in supporting library services in order to eliminate library anxiety factors.
Fifth, it is necessary to provide book and culture programs for the elderly that can delay and slow down psychological aging to help them overcome library anxiety.
With the acceleration of an aging society significantly affecting changes in the public library services, it is worthwhile to continue research on the role of public libraries as community infrastructure and the promotion of library use of senior citizens by preventing library anxiety.
