고전 문학이라는 것은 우리 민족의 사상과 감정을 학생들에게 전해주고, 선조들의 지혜를 알 수 있게 해준다는 점에서 그리고 건전한 민족 문화의 창조를 위해서 중요한 의의를 갖는다. 특히 자라나는 청소년에게 교육을 통해 문화 민족으로서의 자부심을 심어주는 일은 매우 중요하다 하겠다. 교육이 목표를 수행하는 과정이라고 볼 때 중학교 국어과 문학 영역의 목표는 문학에 관한 기초적인 지식을 갖추고, 작품 감상력과 상상력을 기르게 하여 민족의 언어 문화에 대한 이해와 관심을 갖게 하는 것이다. 이 문학 영역의 목표는 고전 문학 교육을 통해서도 달성되어야 하지만 중학교 교육을 통해 그 목표가 제대로 수행된다고 보기에는 부족한 점이 많다. 설문을 통해 알아 본 결과 학생들은 학교에서 고전 문학을 배우고 난 후 고전 문학에 대해 지겹고 어렵다는 인식을 갖게 되었기 때문이다.
따라서 본 논문에서는 그러한 원인이 생기는 이유를 구명하고, 그 개선방안을 알아보고자 교육 과정 속에 나타난 문제점이 무엇인지 고찰해 보고, 교육의 주체인 교사와 학생이 느끼는 문제는 무엇인지 설문지를 통해 알아 보았다. 크게 교육 내용적 측면과 방법적 측면에서 그 원인을 분석해 보았고, 그 개선 방안을 내용적, 방법적, 기타 제도적 측면에서 제시해 보았는데 그 내용은 다음과 같다.
교육 내용적 측면에서 첫째, 국어 교과서에 실린 교육 내용적 요소에 고전 문학에 대한 내용이 명확하지 않아 어느 정도까지 가르쳐야 할지 애매하다는 점이다. 그렇기 때문에 교육 과정에 고전 문학에 대한 교육 내용적 요소를 넣어야 한다.
둘째 교과서에 실린 고전 문학 작품들이 2학기에 편중되어 있는 문제를 해결해야 할 것이다. 현대 문학에 비해 작품 수도 현저하게 적은데, 많은 작품을 접하기도 힘들기 때문에 자주라도 접할 수 있도록 배려해야 한다.
셋째 교과서에 실린 지문이 학생들이 이해하기에는 너무 어렵기 때문에 교사들의 설명식 수업이 될 수밖에 없다. 따라서 교과서 지문을 학생들이 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 바꾸어야 한다.
넷째 국문학의 흐름을 알 수 있고 학생들이 고전 문학에 대한 기초 지식을 쌓을 수 있는 설명문이 제 구실을 못하고 있다는 점이다. 이 단원이 제 구실을 하기 위해서는 고전 문학을 많이 접해본 3학년 과정에 넣든지아니면 적게 실려 있는 고전 문학 작품 수를 늘리든 지의 방법을 강구할 수 있다.
교육 방법적 측면에서 보면 교사들의 일방적 설명 위주의 수업에서 탈피하여 학생들이 적극적으로 수업에 참여할 수 있는 다양한 방법을 강구해 고전 문학 수업을 즐겁게 만들어야 할 것이다. 그리고 학생들이 고전문학을 이해하기 위한 자료가 부족하기 때문에 자료를 다양하게 개발하여 보급해야 한다.
기타 제도적 측면에서 교사들의 전문성 부족을 들 수 있다. 시대는 빠르게 변화하는데 교사들의 수준은 늘 그 자리라면 교육은 퇴보할 수밖에 없다. 따라서 교사들이 전문성을 갖출 수 있는 다양한 전공 연수를 만들어야 한다. 그리고 일년에 2권의 책을 배우기에는 수업 시수가 너무 부족하다. 교육 내용을 전반적으로 조금씩 줄여 학생과 교사의 부담을 덜든지, 수업 시수를 늘리든지의 방안을 강구해야 한다.
7차 국어과 교육 과정의 목표는 “언어 활동과 언어와 문학의 본질을 총체적으로 이해하고, 언어 활동의 맥락과 목적과 대상과 내용을 종합적으로 고려하면서 국어를 정확하고 효율적으로 사용하며, 국어 문화를 바르게 이해하고, 국어의 발전과 민족의 언어 문화 창달에 이바지할 수 있는 능력과 태도를 기른다.”이다. 6차와 달라진 점이 있다면 문학에 대한 이해과 관심을 갖게 하는 수준을 넘어서, 언어 문화를 창조할 수 있는 주체로 기르겠다는 것이다. 그러기 위해서는 먼저 학생들이 우리 문학을 좋아하고 즐길 수 있어야한다. 우리 문학을 좋아하고 즐길 수 있도록 만들기 위해서는 지금 문제가 되고 있는 점들을 시급히 개선하는 것이 무엇보다도 중요하다.

The classic literature has an important role in delivering the ideology and emotion of our nation to the students and teaching the wisdom of ancestors, and even more in creating the sound national culture. Especially, it is thought that to raise the pride as of the cultural nation of the growing young people through the education is very important. Considering the education as the course where an object is developed, the object of the Korean language and literature in the middle school is to give the fundamental knowledge about the literature, to improve the appreciation and creation ability about the work, and then to interest students in the understanding and concern about the language culture of our nation. This object of the literature field should be achieved through the education of the classic literature, but many things are thought to be insufficient to handle the object through the education of the middle school. That is because the result from the survey and interview with students shows that they became to have the thought that the classic literature is difficult and boring after learning the classic literature in the school.
Therefore, in this thesis, the reason why the above condition was happened was researched, what the problem which was incurred in the course of the education is in order to develop the improvement way, and what the teacher and student who are the main individuals in the education are feeling were studied through the questionnaire. In large, the reason was analyzed in the aspect of the content and method, and the improvement way was proposed in the aspect of the content, method, and other institution. The content is as follows.
In the aspect of the education content, firstly, the problem is that the limitation of the education is ambiguous, that is, to what extent the teacher should teach the classic literature, because the content about the classic literature in the educational content element, which was printed in the Korean language textbook, is not clear. Therefore, the educational content element about the classic literature should be inserted in the education course.
Secondly, the problem that the classic literature works which was printed in the textbook were mainly located in the 2nd semester textbook should be settled. The number of works is remarkably little compared with the number of the modern literature, so students should be able to contact the works often even because they are difficult to read many classic literature works.
Thirdly, because the text which is printed in the textbook is too difficult for students, so the class cannot help but being leaded by descriptive way of education. Therefore, those text of the textbook should be changed for students to easily understand.
Fourthly, the explanatory writing is not well performing its duty to raise students' fundamental knowledge about the classic literature and inform students the history of the Korean literature. In order that this field of the writing should perform the original duty, it should be inserted into the course of 3rd grade students who may have contacted frequently, or the works of the classic literature should be increased.
As seen in the aspect of the educational method, escaping from the mainly explanatory way of teaching which is leaded by teachers in only one way, the classic literature class should be the pleasant class by creating the various way to enable the students to actively join the class. Additionally, because there are not enough materials for students to understand the classic literature, the materials should be variously developed and provided.
Then, the other problem in the institution is that the there are some teachers who are not lack of the specialty. While the time is changing fast, if the level and ability of teachers are just the same, then the education cannot be developed and improved. Therefore, there must be various research study programs which arrange teacher some specialty. Additionally, there is so insufficient class time to learn 2 books a year. To lessen the burden of teachers by generally reducing the education content, or to make more class times for handling the above problem should be researched.
The object of the 7th education course of the Korean language class is "To understand entirely the essence of the language activity, the language, and literature, also to use the Korean language accurately and effectively considering comprehensively the coherence, object, target, and content of the language activity, and to raise the ability and attitude which enables to contribute to the development of Korean language and the promotion of the language culture of the nation". If there is some different thing with the 6th education course of the Korean language class, it would be to raise students as the main people to create the language culture beyond the level of interesting students in the literature, and enabling them to understand and be concern about it. In order to achieve the above thing, the students should be able to like our literature and should enjoy it. Hereupon, In order that they would be able to like and enjoy the classic literature, it is the most important thing to urgently improve and reform the present outstanding problems.
