This study is a descriptive research study to grasp the effect of the experience of transformational leadership that dental hygienists received from supervisor on the empathy and communication efficacy of dental hygienists. Data were collected from May 1st to June 10th, 2020, with a structured questionnaire disseminated to 154 dental hygienists working in dental clinics located in Busan and Gyeongnam. With the collected data, frequency analysis, independent t-test, one way ANOVA, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were conducted using the IBM SPSS statistics version 25.0. The results of this study are as follows.
The higher the level of experience of transformational leadership of dental hygienists, the higher the empathy(p<0.001) and communication efficacy(p<0.001). The experience of transformational leadership of dental hygienists had a statistically significant correlation with empathy(r=0.481, p<0.001) and communication efficacy(r=0.289, p<0.001). Among the sub-factors of the experience of transformational leadership, the factors that statistically significantly affected the empathy of dental hygienists were intellectual stimulation(β=0.22, p<0.05) and individualized consideration(β=0.19, p<0.05). Among the sub-factors of the experience of transformational leadership, intellectual stimulation(β=0.27, p<0.05) had statistically significantly affected the communication efficacy of dental hygienists.
To increase the empathy and communication efficacy of dental hygienists, increasing the experience of transformational leadership from the supervisor is necessary. Moreover, to increase the empathy and communication efficacy of dental hygienists, developing and implementing education to enhance the transformative leadership skills of the supervisor, and active efforts of the members of the organization are necessary. Through presenting the abovementioned results, this thesis intended to help to improve the dental organization and to develope the competence of its staff. Besides, this thesis also intended to provide base data that may assist dental hygienists to acquire leadership competencies suitable for the contemporary era.
