This study aims to examine the ways in which amateurism was realized by focusing on Review, Today's Feeling, and Version Up, three representative popular culture critique magazines that emerged in the 1990s. After the collapse of real socialism, post-theory was rapidly entered and the realism which emphasized totality was no longer convincing within the literary scene. In response, there were attempts to freshen up the atmosphere by turning from literature to non-literary culture, which the new cultural magazines were born resisting seriousness and solemnity. Paying attention to these attempts is important because the disparate but common project of these magazines allows us to grasp the various desires of the discourse at that time. In particular, Review, Today's Forecast, and Version Up each adopted amateurism in terms of genre, subject, and medium. All of them tried to differentiate themselves by voluntarily establishing an internal system rather than being externally qualified. They actively referenced each other and exchanged critical opinions, resulting in rich discussions, and strived for the renewal of criticism in an era when the crisis of literature and criticism was discussed. Review took over the project of Imagine, which tried to make diverse popular culture the subject of criticism but failed to realize it, and set out to establish a genealogy for the growth of popular culture in general. Review tried to realize amateurism through the expansion of genres. To this end, it presented a chronology of various cultural genres, including literature, film, music, architecture, visual arts, and so on. These genre-specific critiques were based on artistry and sincerity, which ties in with the ethos of rock music that is also the main focus of the Review. The attempt to identify art that embodies the values of authenticity in a multifaceted way reveals Review’s aspirations to even out the terrain of popular culture without favoring any one genre. This went as far as discussing systematic and administrative policies to revitalize popular culture by addressing various cultural topics. Today's Forecast challenged the Review that produced comparatively stable and neutral criticism, which was more radically than any other magazine by basing on the young identity of college students. The critics of the magazine declared that they would practice amateur criticism, and dichotomized culture in terms of democracy and nationalism, which were considered the most resistant in the early 1990s. In addition, they once again invoke The New Generation Debate, which was once actively discussed in early 1990s but remained superficial for not including real voices of the new generation. Therefore, they decided to reveal their own voices by talking about their cultural background and expressing their opinions on the topic. Today's Forecast, however, begins to pursue resistance in a different way over time. It completely breaks away from the nationalist camp and instead immerses itself in anarchist thinking and the new space opened up by PC communications, which allows it to break free from the rules of society that bind conventional thinking while accepting capitalism to a certain extent. Based on the avant-garde nature of Today's Forecast as seen, Version Up proposed the name of cyber-literature to spark a lively debate and shed light on the prominent experimental attempts in communication. Their proposed cyber-literature is characterized by imagination(commu+gination) through innovation of interactive communication structures as part of an amateurism that expands the medium of literature. In order to make this argument, Version Up includes a debate on different names for literary activities that take place in PC communications. In doing so, it hoped to establish a dialectical theory of cyber-literature. The attempt to build such a theory came from the experimental texts that were being produced at the time. The initiative of Version Up, which focused on novel practices such as short comics, cyberhumor, amateur personal webpages, cyberdramas, and relay novels, is notable as a cradle for the variety of literary texts being produced today. These magazines have shown a desire for recognition, emphasizing the value of authenticity and distinguishing themselves from previous critical generations, but they are limited by the fact that while they claim to be new, they are still echoing the past. Nevertheless, it is important to examine the founding and detailed planning of these new magazines because it shows the complex and ambivalent minds of the time and the tasks they had to fulfill in the 1990s. By analyzing their attempts as amateurish endeavors, we can focus more on their accomplishments and highlight the positive aspects, despite the limitations found. Furthermore, because an attitude of amateurism can inject flexibility into rigid thinking and help to open up the closed mind, the magazines’ amateurish experiments in the 1990s are likely to remain relevant in the current emphasis on professionalism. By closely examining the different orientations of popular cultural criticism magazines in the 1990s, this dissertation aims to lay the groundwork for a continuation of the study of the 1990s and its erupting aspirations, and to provide a basis for the study to resonate with the contemporary.
