Smart devices provide increased quality of life for persons by integrating them with information technologies in their surroundings. For example, in smart home environments, household systems and appliances are connected through a computer network, which allows control by mobile users and remote access from the Internet. This can increase convenience, energy efficiency and security, but it also gives rise to user privacy and information overload problems. For secure and convenient smart home applications and services, the unauthorized release and use of personal information should be prevented and the difficulty a person can have understanding an issue and making decisions due to the presence of too much information should be resolved. To address these problems, this paper proposes two schemes.
First, the paper proposes a mutual authentication scheme that enables two parties (mobile users and smart home access points) to authenticate each other in such a way that both parties are assured of the others' identity. The proposed scheme is a hybrid authentication protocol that utilizes a mobile handset’s Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM) and RFID technology. Its light-weight user authentication based on low-cost RFID tags attached to users makes it applicable to resource, power and computationally constrained platforms.
Second, the paper proposes a recommendation algorithm that filters a large amount of real-time information collected and shared in a smart home environment and provides recommendations that suit a user’s interest. The proposed recommendation algorithm utilizes a user’s personal, social and emotional information to make automatic predictions about the interests of the user. In addition, it exploits a user’s rating tendency to further increase the accuracy of recommendations. That is, it categorizes users with a similar rating tendency into clusters and selects like-minded users, whose preferences are used as the basis for recommendations, from the clusters.
To evaluate the performance of the authentication protocol and the recommendation algorithm proposed in this paper, Success@k and the mean absolute error were measured. The experiments were performed using the publicly available data like the MovieLens data sets and the data collected specifically for this work. The experiment results show that the proposed two schemes contribute to implementing more secure and efficient smart home systems. The proposed recommendation algorithm achieves higher recommendation accuracy and user satisfaction than conventional recommendation methods, and the authentication protocol improves user privacy in smart home systems by allowing only legitimate user access.
