This study is a qualitative research that analyzes the learning experiences formed by graduate students majoring in Arts and Cultural Management as they participated in exhibition planning internships, based on Kolb's (1984) experiential learning theory. Arts and Cultural Management education requires a combination of theoretical inquiry and practical sense due to its interdisciplinary nature; however, practice-based courses are relatively rare in the actual curriculum. In particular, this study focused on the educational implications of exhibition planning classes and related internships, which the researcher directly observed and participated in. Exhibition planning is a practical activity that requires both artistic sensitivity and planning execution skills, and theoretical education alone is insufficient to fully develop the competencies of planners. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effectiveness of practice-based education by analyzing internship experiences linked to exhibition planning courses, exploring how learners internalize their learning through the four stages of Kolb’s cycle: Concrete Experience, Reflective Observation, Abstract Conceptualization, and Active Experimentation. In this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight graduate students majoring in Arts and Cultural Management, using semi-structured questions to trace each participant’s learning process. Deductive content analysis, with Kolb’s theory as the central framework, was employed as the analysis method, categorizing emotions, changes in perception, strategy formation, and patterns of implementation at each stage. The results showed that the participants experienced not only the performance of practical tasks but also the adjustment of self-perception, formation of planning strategies, and expansion of practical sense through the exhibition planning internship. Notably, this study proposed the new concept of a ‘transcendent spiral structure,’ which extends beyond Kolb’s cyclical structure. This concept explains the process by which participants transferred the senses and strategies accumulated through exhibition planning to other genres such as publishing, education, and journalism, thereby expanding the applicability of Kolb’s theory in the context of arts and cultural practice education.
This study demonstrates that exhibition planning internships can serve as an opportunity not only for short-term experiences but also for forming practical identities and developing autonomous learning strategies. It provides implications for the theoretical design and practical operation of experiential learning in Arts and Cultural Management education.
