The wheel lock-pin of UH-60P "Black hawk" helicopter landing gear currently used by the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) is used to fix the wheels so that the helicopter does not change its direction when the helicopter taxing on the ground. When a large force is applied to the lock-pin in a static state, the lock-pin is failed and serves to prevent damage to the entire system of the landing gear. The cause of the failure of the lock-pin is usually caused by the mistake of the pilot. The problem is that the failure of the lock-pin is very frequent and the part depends entirely on imports. If the supply is not smooth, it leads to a loss of power and leads to a national loss.
The purpose of this study is to make it possible to procure domestic when needed. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the causes of tail wheel lock-pin failure through reverse design, material analysis and failure analysis through finite element analysis, and fabrication of lock-pin with process analysis.
The lock-pin is broken on the ground before the helicopter takes off. The reason is that the pilot generates tail rotor thrust in “lock” state where the lock-pin is engaged. And a shear load of about 10.04kN acts on the pin. This load is a direct cause of the failure of the lock-pin. and the reliability of the failure prediction model was verified by comparing the shear stress and Von-mises stress values applied to the failure point with the finite element analysis.
Among the additive manufacturing, A PBF technique is the most common technology, and it has the advantage that it is possible to output parts at high resolution and to print using various metal powders. However, after the part output, the deformation due to residual stress and the pores generated by various physical phenomenon adversely affect the mechanical properties of the part. In particular, for metal 3D printing, there are various process parameters which determine the energy density of metal 3D printing. Printing with a high energy density at the time of printing, the results in a large residual stress on the part, which causes large deformation. Printing with a low energy density does not sinter the metal powder and the result including many porosity. Therefore it is important to find and print an appropriate energy density.
In addition, the process analysis and porosity measurement with respect to energy density show the large deformation under the 220W (85.9J/) to 230W(89.8J/) and 870mm/s(90J/) to 890mm/s(88J/). On the other hand, 210W(82.03J/) to 240W(93.75J/) and 830mm/s(94.13J/) to 920mm/s (84.92J/) exhibit the lowest porosity.
Considering the amount of deformation and porosity, A optimum PBF metal 3D printing conditions with the lowest porosity and deformation is energy density of 85J/(250W, 920mm/s).
Electron back scatter diffraction (EBSD) inverse polo figure (IPF) maps and grain size distributions of the as-built specimens under the optimum conditions of 250W and 920mm/s confirm the re-crystallization of grains in the building process. Most grains exhibit a <001> texture and a columnar structure characteristic of PBF along the printing track because the <001> direction is the preferred orientation that facilitates the release of latent heat of melting during solidification of face centered cubic(FCC) structures. In addition, there is small and homogeneous grain distributions (>95.3% at 0–25μm), which shows excellent mechanical properties.
HIP treatment has a substantial effect on microstructure. The grains exhibited a fully recrystallized structure and microvoid coalescence. After HIP treatment, the yield strength and ultimate strength increased by 30.2% and 23.5%, respectively, elongation at break decreased by 18.2%, and the density increased by 1.2% because 17-4PHSS is not fully martensitic in the manufacturing process and 17-4PHSS contains austenite owing to its high solidification rate. This prevents the formation of martensite, thereby forming the austenite microstructure and after HIP-treated, lager equiaxed grain exists due to nucleation growth. This could affect the mechanical properties of the material.
