The use of 3D printing for the restoration of cultural heritage has been actively employed in conservation and restoration efforts, supported by factors such as high precision, similar material properties, and ease of operation compared to traditional manual restoration methods. However, its application to metallic cultural heritage has faced limitations, particularly in the domain of metal artifacts. Therefore, this study aimed to research suitable 3D printing materials and techniques for the restoration of metallic cultural heritage. The utilization of metal PLA as a restoration material allows for the replication of artifacts through 3D scanning and printing, ensuring authenticity and significance in original restoration.
To assess the applicability of the metal PLA 3D printing technique in the restoration of metallic cultural heritage, experiments were conducted on patination, sintering application, and a comparison of pre- and post-characteristics. Observations of corrosion patterns revealed that Cu-PLA exhibited blue and green corrosion surfaces, while Fe-PLA displayed yellow corrosion layers with a black patina. Cross-sectional analysis indicated layered turquoise corrosion for Cu-PLA and yellow corrosion layers with a black-to-green transition patina for Fe-PLA. Chemical analysis confirmed the presence of copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) as the primary components, with the detection of sulfur (S) post-patination, suggesting the formation of corrosion layers with sulfur-based compounds.
Evaluation of artifact suitability demonstrated that specimens produced through metal PLA 3D printing exhibited forms and textures similar to traditional cast and forged specimens, with minimal color deviation as assessed by color difference measurements. Sintering observations revealed surfaces with a gloss similar to standard metals, accompanied by a reduction in dimensions and weight by approximately 10~25%. Microstructural analysis indicated a decrease in the boundaries between metal particles, achieving a higher metal particle density per unit area, and the presence of previously unseen metallic structures. Surface hardness, density, and absorption measurements post-sintering showed increased Vickers hardness and density, and decreased absorption compared to pre-sintering. The results suggested that metal PLA 3D printing and sintering could achieve surfaces with similar hardness, gloss, and lightweight properties to standard metals.
The application of the metal PLA 3D printing technique for the restoration of metallic cultural heritage can be divided into two main approaches: patination-based methods and sintering-based methods. The former includes the use of copper alloy materials (Cu-PLA or Bronze PLA) with artificially applied corrosion effects, while iron-based materials (Fe-PLA) can produce corrosion layers through the introduction of NaCl or oxidation environments. Additionally, the use of rust converters allows for partial black expression and the formation of inert rust films, contributing to restoration and preservation effects. The latter approach, employing sintering processes, can create metallic surfaces with effects, hardness, and low specific gravity similar to standard metals. This lightweight metal production can be applied to the restoration of missing parts and the functional utilization of modern cultural heritage.
In conclusion, this study presents the potential application of the metal PLA 3D printing technique in the restoration of metallic cultural heritage. The provided foundational information and database contributions are expected to contribute to further advancements in the field.
