As interest in personal reflection and meditation increases in today’s fast-paced society, small chapels are being designed for a variety of purposes globally. With a growing tendency among not only Christians but also non-Christians to seek silence and tranquility, chapels are gaining attention as spaces for spiritual healing that transcend religious boundaries. Although small in scale, these chapels are regarded as spaces that concentrate on the essence of Christian worship and faith. Many architects use them as experimental grounds to express Christian symbolism and meaning through architecture. Despite this trend, there remains a lack of systematic research on the Christian symbolism embedded in small chapels and their architectural expression.
This study investigates how key Christian symbols—divine transcendence, the boundary between the sacred and the secular, and the presence of God—have been historically embodied in church architecture. Based on this, it identifies core symbolic elements and analyzes how these have been reinterpreted and expressed in small chapels. Furthermore, the study proposes a design direction for small chapels that suit the particular context of hospice care.
The research begins with a theoretical exploration of symbolic meaning in church architecture and examines small chapel case studies built within the last 15 years (as of 2025) both in Korea and internationally, identifying their spatial configurations and symbolic characteristics. Subsequently, the St. Isidore Hospice in Jeju was selected as the design site, and a comprehensive analysis was conducted on its historical background, physical environment, and user characteristics. The design project was developed under the concept of a “Journey of Light,” using the traditional basilica floor plan as a design framework. Three chapels were mapped onto distinct spatial segments and arranged linearly on the site to form a symbolic procession. The project ultimately proposes a spatial experience that enables users to contemplate the origin of life and the world beyond death within the framework of Christian faith.
Through this project, it was confirmed that “transcendence” and the “presence of God” are central themes in hospice chapels. The architectural expressions of Christian symbolism derived from this are as follows:
First, transcendence is embodied through circular floor plans, vertically extended walls, and the use of natural light from skylights. In a circular space, users are immersed in a sense of eternity that transcends temporal and spatial limitations, while verticality evokes awe toward the divine. Light pouring from above is perceived as a divine message, allowing users to intuitively sense the presence of God and encounter a transcendent reality.
Second, the presence of God is primarily expressed through the altar. Even in a minimal space, the presence of an altar communicates the sacredness of the space and encourages reverence. Therefore, the spatial composition should guide the user’s gaze and spirit naturally toward the altar.
Third, the boundary between the sacred and the secular is expressed through thresholds and transitional pathways. In hospice chapels, spatial boundaries such as columns, walls, or deliberate transitional zones can serve to separate the everyday from the sacred. These transitions enable emotional and spiritual preparation before entering the worship space.
These three symbolic dimensions play a fundamental role in allowing users within the hospice environment to encounter the divine and undergo a spiritual experience that transcends life and death.
In conclusion, this study examines how core Christian symbols can be architecturally expressed, and how small chapels reinterpret and distill these symbols in minimal form. It also proposes a practical design direction for small chapels situated in unique environments such as hospices. This research can serve as a foundational resource for the integrated design of worship and healing spaces in the future.
