Begining with the discussions of the ‘Industrious Revolution’ and leading to the theory of ‘labour-intensive industrialization’ by Kaoru Sugihara, the revisionist studies of Japanese economic history have the merits to highlight the independency of Asia from the modern world-system and take a bash at the dissolution of modern Euro-centric view-points. These merits, perhaps, is reason why their findings has been accepted positively by the scholars of global economic history, such as Kenneth Pomeranz, Giovanni Arrighi, etc.
However they, also, are so conservative that very belittle the moment of Imperialism in Asian modern history and re-evaluate Japanese industrialization as an ‘engine’ of Asian economic growth. Notably, in the theory of labour-intensive industrialization' that Sugihara has put forward as another path of industrialization and an alternative to the capital-intensive industrialization of Western Europe, Japanese imperialism is characterized as the ‘resource imperialism’ being at risk that it justify Japanese acts of aggression and having the probability that it afford the grounds to evade Japanese responsibility of imperialist invasions toward the neighbour countries. At same time, this theory has resulted in the justification of the exploitive system based on low-wage and long-hour labour on which other scholars have brought into question in East-Asian industrialization, by defining -unlikely Western Europe- the industrialization using a vague concept of ‘hard-working’.
In short, in spite of its positive meanings in the context of the whole history of Global economy, Sugihara's theory of ‘labour-intentsve industrialization’ has problems that it glamorizes unduly and interprets distortedly the historical developments of intra-East Asian economy.

근면혁명 논의를 계기로 시작되어 스기하라 가오루의 ‘노동집약형 공업화’론으로 이어지는 수정주의적 일본경제사 연구는 근대세계체제에 대한 아시아의 독자성을 강조하며 유럽 중심적 근대세계관의 해체를 시도하는 장점을 가졌다. 이 연구가 가진 이러한 장점이야말로 이들의 연구 성과가 케네스 포메란츠나 조반니 아리기 같은 글로벌 경제사 학자들의 연구에 적극적으로 수용된 이유일 것이다.
그러나 다른 한편으로 그런 시각은 아시아 근대사에서 제국주의의 계기를 극도로 경시하고 일본공업화를 아시아 경제 성장의 “엔진”으로 평가하는 보수성을 동시에 갖고 있다. 특히 스기하라가 공업화 과정의 또 다른 경로이자 서구의 자본집약형 공업화에 대한 대안으로까지 격상시켜 제기하는 노동집약형 공업화론은 일본 제국주의를 ‘자원 제국주의’로 성격 부여하여 제국 일본의 침략 행위를 정당화할 위험성을 안고 있고 일본이 주변 여러 나라에 끼친 피해에 대한 책임을 회피할 근거를 제공해 줄 가능성을 갖고 있다. 아울러 그의 공업화론은 (서구와 달리) ‘근면’이라는 실체가 불확실한 개념을 활용하여 공업화를 규정함으로써, 동아시아의 공업화 과정에서 문제시되었던 저임금․장시간 노동의 착취 체계를 정당화하는 결과를 낳고 있다. 결국 스기하라 가오루의 ‘노동집약형 공업화’론은 글로벌 경제사 전체에서 가지는 긍정적 의미에도 불구하고, 동아시아의 지역 내 경제의 사적 전개를 부당하게 미화하고 왜곡해서 해석하는 문제점을 안고 있다.
