    이 논문은 지난 100년간의 장보고 연구를 살펴보기 위해 쓰였다. 1920년대부터 본격적으로 시작된 장보고 연구는 오늘날에 이르러 괄목할만한 성과를 거두고 있다고 판단된다. 이러한 배경으로는 1980년대 장보고에 대한 종합 연구서의 출간, 1990년대 장보고대사 해양경영사연구회, 한국해양대학교 장보고연구소, 해군사관학교 해군해양연구소, 재단법인 해상왕장보고기념사업회의 활동을 들 수 있다.
    장보고 관련 연구의 활성화를 위해 제언을 해 보자면 우선 국제 협력 연구가 필요하다고 생각한다. 장보고의 활동무대가 한ㆍ중ㆍ일 삼국에 걸쳐 있었기 때문에 삼국 간 협동연구가 필수적이나 이러한 기획이나 연구는 지금까지는 적었다고 할 수밖에 없다.
    다음으로 학제 간 연구나 융복합 연구가 필요하다고 할 수 있다. 기존 성과에서도 일부 다루어졌지만, 한국사, 동양사, 고고학 등 여러 학문 간의 협동연구가 필요하다고 할 수 있다.
    마지막으로 해상왕장보고기념사업회의 소멸로 장보고 연구의 구심점이 사라진 현 상황에서 장보고 관련 연구기관의 협업이 필요하다. 예컨대 국립해양문화재연구원, 한국해양박물관, 한국해양대학교, 해군사관학교 등 관계기관의 팀플레이가 꼭 필요하다.

    This paper examined the past research history on Chang Bogo, which began in the 1920s and is believed to have achieved remarkable results. The background of such achievement is in the publication of a comprehensive study on Chang Bogo in the 1980s and the 1990s workings of the Ambassador Chang Bogo Marine Management Research Society, Korea Maritime & Ocean University’s Chang Bogo Research Institute, Republic of Korea Naval Academy’s the Naval Maritime Research Institute, and Chang Bogo Memorial Foundation.
    This paper proposes three recommendations for the revitalization of research on Chang Bogo. First, international cooperative research is needed. Since the range of Chang Bogo’s activities spanned the three countries of Korea, China, and Japan, collaborative research between the three countries is essential. Still, such planning and research have so far been feeble.
    Next, interdisciplinary or convergence research is necessary. Although some of the existing achievements have been covered, it can be said that cooperative research between various disciplines, such as Korean history, oriental history, and archaeology, is necessary.
    Finally, a collaboration between research institutes related to Chang Bogo is required, especially when the focus of Chang Bogo research has dispersed due to the disappearance of the Chang Bogo Memorial Foundation. For example, team play by related organizations such as the National Institute of Marine Cultural Heritage, Korea Maritime Museum, Korea Maritime & Ocean University, and Republic of Korea Naval Academy is essential.
