This article analyses the intellectual divergences of modernization ideas in liberal thoughts and theories — before and after the Great Divergence — including the 20th century Modernization project under the US hegemony. From the 1990s, new intellectual trends such as New Global History or World History, California School, studies on East Asian Development Path shed new lights on East Asian history and its modern trajectories. Based on insights drawn from intellectual trends, this research discusses the significances and limits of (European) universalism found in liberal theories of modernization. This article also considers the limits of post-colonial critiques of Eurocentrism.
Going beyond the paradigm of catching up with the West should be the processes of inventing new universalism(s), which could not be reduced to ‘Provincializing Europe’ or any regional parochialism.

20세기 말부터 새로운 세계사, 동서 대분기와 동아시아 발전경로에 관한 연구들이 활발하게 이루어져 왔다. 이러한 연구들은 서양 중심주의 세계사 인식과 동아시아 역사상을 비판하여 동아시아 현대화를 새롭게 검토하는 지적 계기가 된다. 이글은 이러한 연구들의 기여를 일정하게 인정하면서도 그 결함에 주목하며 다음과같은 검토를 수행한다. 먼저, 대분기를 전후하여 전개된 서양 지식인들의 비유럽세계와 동아시아에 대한 인식의 분기가 (자유주의적) 보편주의의 모순 그리고 19세기에 보이는 현대화론의 징후적인 출현과 어떠한 관련을 맺는가를 살핀다. 다음으로, 동아시아의 현대화와 동아시아 역사상이 어떠한 관계를 맺는지를 일본과 한국에 소개된 현대화의 기획을 사례로 검토한다. 1950년대 이후 동아시아는 미국발현대화론을 ‘검증’하는 곳이 된다. 따라서 새로운 동서 대분기와 동아시아 발전 경로 연구는 20세기 현대화론의 의미와 한계를 검토할 수 있는 중요한 계기를 제공한다. 결론에서는 새로운 대분기 연구와 관련하여 현대화론의 의미를 살피고 새로운대분기 연구의 한계에 대해서도 토론한다. 서양화와 현대화는 온전히 분리되지 않지만 하나도 아닌 관계를 맺어 왔다. 서양중심주의 비판과 서양에 대한 추격 발전모델의 지양은 이른바 ‘서양의 지방화’나 ‘동아시아 본질주의’로 환원되지 않는 새로운 보편주의의 발명과 결합되어야 한다.
