1997년 IMF 사태 이후 신자유주의는 한국사회의 뜨거운 논쟁거리이다. 자유주의 신 / 고전경제학을 따르는 사람들은 이를 전적으로 찬성하는 반면 맑스주의 정치경제학을 따르는 사람들은 극단적으로 반대하고 있다. 이 글은 이 두 입장이 생산중심주의에 빠져있다는 점에서 진정한 대립이 아니라고 보고, 이에 대한 대안으로 신자유주의에 대한 문화적 해석을 시도한다. 이를 위해 두 가지의 뒤르케임 전통을 도입한다. 하나는 시장의 자기조정적 능력을 과신하는 공리주의적 질서와 국가의 통합능력을 과장하는 사회주의적 질서 모두를, 다양한 직업집단들로 구성된 심의 / 성찰적 민주 조합국가의 ‘도덕적 조절’로 비판하는 것이다. 나머지 하나는 현대의 사회적 실재를 성과 속의 이항적 상징체계로 구성된 이중적 질서로 보는 것이다. 이러한 뒤르케임적 시각에서 볼 때, 자유주의는 이윤동기가 도덕 경제로부터 탈배태되었다가 국민국가로 재배태된 것으로, 신자유주의는 더 나아가 국민국가로부터 탈배태된 것으로 이해 될 수 있다. 문화적 차원에서 볼 때, 자유주의의 핵심은 영원성의 추구의 절멸과 불멸성 추구로의 선회이며, 신자유주의의 그것은 불멸성 추구의 파편화와 존재의 연속성에 대한 향수이다.

Neoliberalism has become a heated issue in Korea since the 1997 IMF regime. Those who follows liberal, classical political economy agree completely with liberalism while those supporting Marxist political economy stand against it. This paper argues that this antithesis is not a real one because both sides fall into productioncentrism; this paper, on the other hand, tries to interpret neoliberalism in terms of culture. To do so, a Durkheimian perspective consisting of the following two theses is adopted: First, criticism is launched against both the utilitarian order for its overconfidence in the market`s self-regulating capacity and the socialist order for exaggerating the State`s integrating power through the moral regulation of a deliberative / reflective democratic corporatist State consisting of various occupational groups. Second, the modern social order is considered as a double order consisting of the binary symbolic system of the sacred and the profane. From this Durkheimian perspective, liberalism might be seen as dis-embeddedness of the profit motive from moral economy and its re-embeddedness in the nation-state while neoliberalism as its dis-embeddedness from the nation-state. In terms of culture, the core of liberalism is the annihilation of the pursuit of eternity and the turn toward immortality, and the kernel of neoliberalism is the fragmentation of the pursuit of eternity and nostalgia for the continuity of being.
