The Suryukjae ritual represents the most comprehensive form of ritual food offering(sisik). By inviting both sages and ordinary beings to partake in the offerings, the ceremony aims to facilitate the rebirth of the deceased and ownerless wandering spirits(muju-gohon). Additionally, through the accumulated merit, the sponsor(seolpanja) is able to fulfill their wishes.
Seolpan(設辦) refers to the financial sponsorship of Suryukjae ritual.. Its purpose is to achieve various goals, including the extension of life, the accumulation of wealth and merit, the salvation of hungry ghosts(agwi), and other complex spiritual and worldly objectives.
In contemporary contexts, the costs associated with the Seolpan in Korean Buddhist Suryukjae rituals are typically covered through participant contributions or external institutional funding.
However, to fulfill the ritual’s intended purpose, there must be an actual sponsor who generates merit by personally covering the costs of the Suryukjae ritual.
To achieve the original goals of the Suryukjae, one must move beyond a ritual framework that is overly constrained by tradition. The ritual should be conducted within a contemporary daily schedule(ilcha), incorporating direct participation from the lay community through practices such as incense offering(heonhyang) and tea offering(heonda).
Furthermore, it is necessary to ritualize the act of offering food(jaesik) without discrimination(mucha) to both monastics and laypeople(dosok), as this is a central practice within the Suryukjae.
