The article aims to explore the lives and thoughts of ordinary local intellectuals at that time through the 『Hajaeilgi』 of the late 19th-early 20th. According to his diary, Chi Gyusik was pursuing Confucian values. When we heard Qing's invasion of foreign countries, regarded the relationship between Joseon and Qing as closely related by using the term “If there is no lips, teeth are chilled.” However, he did not pursue the tradition continuously. Since 1904, he will read many newspapers and pursue an enlightenment campaign about patriotism by nurturing the nation's talents. Nevertheless, by the time of 1910, it showed a gradual adaptation to the Japanese invasion. This form of Ji Gyusik shows the daily life of ordinary people at the crossroads of tradition and modernity.
