Sharkskin, with its distinctive texture, unique patterns, and exceptional durability rarely found in other animal hides, has been valued and widely used since ancient times. Joseon-era documents offer information on the terminology and classification of sharkskin, the methods and purposes of crafting with it, its production and trades centers, and its alternative materials.
Sharkskin had become so emblematic that it was often described simply as “fish skin(魚皮, eopi)”, a term that seems to have been used generically to refer to the skins of cartilaginous f ish, such as sharks and rays. Moreover, during the Joseon period, a clear distinction was made between saeopi(sharkskin) and gyoeopi(ray skin), which are now often conflated. Certain types, being difficult to procure in Korea, were primarily imported from Japan.
Sharkskin was used to craft a range of items, including seal boxes, gift boxes, clothing cases, eyeglass cases, and sword sheaths, as well as furniture such as two-tiered cabinets. It also served as a useful tool used for crafting them. Valued for its pleasant tactile quality and lasting durability, sharkskin features natural patterns formed by rounded protrusions, which become even more pronounced when dyed in colors such as red, green, or yellow.
Recent efforts to scientifically analyze the leather materials of key artifacts have also drawn attention. Comparative examinations with historical records have offered clues regarding material selection and terminology classification based on social status. Although still in its early stages, this line of research is significant in that it suggests new directions for future studies.
