Gustav Mahler(1860-1911) started his unfinished Tenth Symphony in F#major during the summer of 1910, which was two or three years after Arnold Schoenberg(1874-1951)'s Second String Quartet was completed. The musical background of Mahler's Symphony was similar to that of Schoenberg because their pieces were based on their desperate marriage and his psychological problems. In addition to the musical background, their bold musical attempts reflect their severe emotions. In Schoenberg's Second String Quartet, Schoenberg attempted to abolish traditional tonality and used the violent and dissonant sonorities. His daring techniques are related to his marital crisis and frustration with life. Mahler also tried the radical techniques within the tonal system: The tonal ambiguity seems to reflect Mahler's emotional instability and it reveals the tendency toward atonality.
Therefore, the paper focuses on some relations between Mahler's Tenth Symphony and Schoenberg's Second String Quartet. First, I explore the psychological aspects related to the pieces. Then I examine how they are related focusing on the personal relationship between the composers and musical ideas as seen in their letters, music and personal background. Some influences of Schoenberg's piece upon Mahler's elucidate not only their intimacy as friends but also their tendency toward new music. If Mahler's life was extended, we may infer that Mahler would compose toward the atonality.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문에서 필자는 쇤베르크(Arnold Schoenberg, 1874-1951)의 <현악4중주 제2번>과 말러(Gustav Mahler, 1860-1911)의 <교향곡 제10번>의 분석을 통하여선배작곡가인 말러가 후배작곡가인 쇤베르크로부터 어떠한 음악적 영향을 받았는지 논하였다. 이들 두 작품의 분석에 앞서, 필자는 먼저 두 사람 간의 우정 혹은 인간관계를 살펴보았으며, 또한 이들 작품이 작곡되었던 시기에 이들 두 작곡가들에게 어떠한 사건이 있었는지 작품배경을 다루었다. 흥미롭게도 이들 작품들은 인생에 있어 큰 상실감에 빠져있었을 때에 작곡되었으며, 작품 안에서나타나는 대담한 음악적 시도들은 그의 불행과 좌절이 분명히 반영되었던 것으로 판단된다. 또한 이 시기에 말러는 쇤베르크에게 몇 차례에 걸쳐 편지를 쓴바 있는데, 이 편지에서 말러는 쇤베르크의 음악적 아이디어를 깊이 이해하고자노력하였던 것으로 보이며, 이러한 관심은 이후에 작곡한 말러의 <교향곡 제10번>에 큰 영향력을 끼쳤던 것이다. 이러한 작품 배경을 토대로 필자는 음악“안”에서 이들 작품이 어떠한 연관성을 보이는지 분석을 통하여 논하였다.
분석을 통하여 필자는 말러가 인간적 관계에서 뿐만 아니라 음악적인 측면에 있어서도 쇤베르크의 영향을 받았음을 알 수 있었다. 만약 말러가 좀 더 오래생존하였다면 말러의 음악적 경향이 쇤베르크의 무조음악으로 방향 전환되었을것이라 여겨지며, 이로써 말러에 대한 음악적 관점이 지금과는 다르게 평가되지않았을까도 생각해 볼 수 있을 것이다.
