This article analyses the response of World-Systems studies to the challenge from California School. California School tends to disentangle the origin of the Great Divergence from the rise of historical capitalism as the Modern World System. Instead, the School pays attention to the Industrial Revolution and its effect on the Great Divergence. However, World-Systems analysts have tended to belittle the epochal change realized in the technological progress in the Industrial Revolution. Due to this tendency, World-Systems analysts, including Giovanni Arrighi, face some difficulties in developing an appropriate theory of biased technological progress based on social selection in the Industrial Revolution and incorporating the theory in World-Systems analysis to respond to the challenge afore-mentioned.

월러스틴과 브로델의 세계체계 분석에서 동서 대분기를 설명하는 데 핵심적인 것은 산업혁명이 아니라 16세기 유럽 자본주의 세계경제의 출현이라고 할 수 있다. 케네스 포메란츠, 로이 빈 웡 등 캘리포니아 학파는 이와 달리 동서 대분기가 19세기에 발생한다는 주장을 제시한다. 이러한 대분기의 결정적인 계기는 노동절약적이고 자본집약적인 산업혁명의 전개이다. 이러한 산업혁명은 장기 16세기 중국과 동아시아 에서 전개된 노동집약적이고 자본절약적인 근면혁명과 대비된다. 이러한 설명에서 세계체계 분석이 주목하는 산업혁명 이전의 자본주의 부상은 동서 대분기를 설명하는 요인이 되지 않는다. 이 글은 이러한 인식을 전제로 캘리포니아 학파의 도전에 대해 세계체계 분석이 성공적으로 대응하는지를 검토하고 그함의를 토론한다. 특히 세계체계 분석에서 산업혁명을 어떻게 인식하는지, 이러한 인식이 자본주의 역사에 대한 세계체계 연구자들의 설명과 어떠한 관련을 맺는가를 검토한다. 캘리포니아 학파의 성과에 대한 세계체계 분석 연구자들, 특히 프랑크와 아리기의 수용과 변용이 갖는 한계는 산업혁명의 성격과 기술진 보의 사회적 선택 메커니즘을 일관되게 개념적으로 설명하지 못한다는 점과 관련되어 있다.
