The homogenization of art and the integration of local art communities can be considered results of globalization effects which is often defined as the compression of the world, or a contraction of time and space. There are several viewpoints on the process of globalization in the art world.
On the one hand, some critics argues that the globalization of comtemporary art follows the patterns of past economy and technology and newest trends of international art world can be globally distributed in real time. This globally connected art world can be called an integrated system in which all art is judged on the basis of the same standards.
On the other hand, some say that the globalization of the art world would end the US and European hegemony in contemporary arts. With the expansion of the art world, in fact, there is a growing demand for wider knowledge of local art traditions. It is also true, however, that the unity of the global art world can be maintained at the price of the subordination of local art communities. To study globalization in the art world, I have looked at some biennial exhibitions such as Venice Biennale, Kassel Documenta, Manifesta, P.S. 1 International Studio Program.
