국문 초록 (Abstract)

어빙 고프만(Erving Goffman)의 틀(frame) 개념이 학계에 소개된 이래, 틀(frame) 개념은 사회학이나 심리학의 영역을 넘어 여러 분야에 걸쳐 인문 · 사회과학자들의 주목을 받아왔다. 특히, 프레이밍 관점(framing perspective)은 지난 20 여 년 동안 사회운동 및 사회문제의 연구에 주도적 패러다임으로 성장해 왔다. 본 연구는 프레이밍 관점(framing perspective)의 내용과 그 동안의 성과 및 한계를 먼저 살펴보고, 프레이밍 관점의 발전 방향을 이론적으로 논의해 보고자 하였다. 요컨대, 필자는 사회운동의 형성과 발전, 그리고 결과라고 하는 운동의 사이클에 있어서 사회문화적 특성이 미치는 영향을 강조하고, 프레이밍 연구자들이 앞으로 거시 맥락으로서의 문화적 환경에 보다 많은 관심을 기울일 필요가 있음을 제안하고 있다.

The social movement framing perspective has been the one of most important and popular paradigms for social movement scholars over the last 20 years. Despite this fact, the framing perspective has been criticized in several ways. The first criticism focuses on the interpersonal culture of framing, which is too focused on the micro-context within the movement. The second criticism of the framing perspective relates to the use of elite-centered models. While meaning is conceptualized as the negotiated product of an interactive process, as a practical matter the empirical work largely ignores rank-and-file “reception” of frames and emphasizes cognitive, social psychological, and elite-driven constructions. The third criticism of framing focuses on the range of the framing perspective, which includes only local interpretation and grassroots meanings. All three criticisms could be responded to in part by adjusting the framing perspective to bring in the wider cultural context. There is a need for wider understanding and interpretation on a societal level and thus framing analysts need to link framing processes to cultural environments.
