This study explores the non-duality (不二) thought presented in the Vimalakīrti Sūtra, focusing on the "Chapter of the Disciples," through the lens of person-centered counseling and existential therapy. The non-duality perspective, which transcends dichotomous distinctions such as sentient beings and Buddhas, good and evil, sickness and health, offers an integrated view of existence. This view is closely aligned with the core attitudes of acceptance and empathy in counseling.
The research begins by analyzing the philosophical foundation and symbolic meaning of non-duality, especially through Vimalakīrti’s illness and his dialogical method in the chapter. It further examines how his skillful means (upāya)—his adaptive and situation-specific teaching style—can inform counselors’ use of language and their attitudes toward client understanding. The study argues that the non-dualistic view supports a flexible, client-centered approach, free from rigid adherence to any single theory or norm.
Findings indicate that non-duality thought provides a philosophical basis for counselors’ empathic acceptance, nonjudgmental stance, and integrative understanding of the human experience. Moreover, Vimalakīrti’s teaching serves as a practical model for promoting clients’ self-awareness and growth. This study highlights the potential of Eastern philosophical insights to meaningfully contribute to contemporary counseling practice.
