This study set out to examine the impacts of Hwaseo Lee Hang-ro's ideas and study on the formation of nationalist ideas in the Yangpyeong area and their meanings. The study further aimed to examine the ideological basis of anti-Japanese loyal troop activities in the area and shed light on their influential relations with his ideas.
Lee's family was part of the Salim force in the Yangpyeong area, having close relations with the local community. Byeokgye, where Lee that revered Song Si-yeol studied, held a favorable location to gather literary figures and create a school as the zenith of a triangle to connect to Kim Sang-heon's academic genealogy in west and Song Si-yeol's academic genealogy in south. It became Lee's local foundation in the Yangpyeong area to complete his study and bring up literary figures. The Hwaseo School created in the area was comprised of literary figures in the line of Yu Jung-gyo. The local activities of Lee and his Hwaseo School seem to have exerted influences on the formation of nationalist ideas in the area.
The study divided the anti-Japanese loyal troop activities in the Yangpyeong area according to the early, middle, and late loyal troops to examine their development processes and check their characteristics. A special focus was placed on Lee Seung-ryong, who was a head of a loyal troop from a military family and raised the Yanggeun loyal troops during the early loyal troops period, and Lee Yeon-nyeon, who developed his loyal troop activities based on Yangpyeong by inheriting the determination of Lee Seung-ryong, his father, during the late loyal troops period. The study reviewed Lee Seung-ryong's past and attitude toward foreign invasions and found that the nationalist ideas formed by the Hwaseo School might have had impacts on his raising Yanggeun loyal troops. In the current situation where there is little information about the background of loyal troop activities among the heads of loyal troops in Yangpyeong during the late loyal troops period, the case of Lee Yeon-nyeon holds important significance to check the goals and backgrounds as the inheritance of his father's determination.
