Vol.15 No.4
(Background and Purpose) Recently, there has been growing awareness of the importance of highway rest areas, but research on spatial changes in highway rest areas is insufficient. It is used as a subjective approach through the analysis of relations between social and cultural factors such as planning approach, space perception, and lifestyle by analyzing form, area, space program, etc. as an analysis method for space change. The subjective approach has limitations in presenting as an objective basis because it can be derived with different results depending on the tendency of individual's space recognition. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to objectively present spatial changes and factors of highway rest areas though the analysis of space syntax which shows the social characteristics of the target space as quantitative figures by understanding the correlation between each unit space. (Method) First, it analyzes the classification of spaces in highway rest areas according to changes in space perception and the morphological changes in space programs. Second, it derives quantitative figures for changes in the relationship of space through the analysis of space syntax. Finally, it presents the objective basis for the shape and factor of the change through the analysis of the correlation between the shape of the space and the relational change. The scope of the study was to set the interior space of the Jinyoung Rest Area which opened in early 1973, the Munkyeong Rest Area (masan-direction) which opened in the middle of 2004, and the Mungyeong Rest Area (yangpyeong-direction) which was reconstructed in 2018. (Results) As a result of analysis, it was found that the required space was found to have strong topological centrality in the early Jinyoung Rest Area, whereas in the case of sufficient space, it was found that the recent Mungyeong Rest Area showed relatively high topological centrality. This is the same result as that of the planned analysis, and the recent space plan in highway rest area was found to be profound and complicated with the formation of various spaces while the initial space plan was simply formed based on various connections to the surrounding space. (Conclusions) Through the analysis of spatial syntax theory along with the planning analysis, it was found that recent changes in the space of highway rest areas is a result of reflecting changes in space recognition of modern people who reflect various needs of users according to lifestyle changes and at the same time is effective and important for personal privacy. These results can provide directions and implications for space changes in future highway rest areas. The significance of this study is that the space changes and factors of highway rest areas were objectively presented through the quantitative numerical changes.

This study aims to analyze the actual state, the satisfaction index, and the satisfaction factor of the residents in the apartment adopting thematic outdoor rest space design. This study also proposes the basic data for the standard of resident-centered rest space design, not designer-centered or fashion-followed design. The results are as follows : First, most residents use near by rest space, and more use occur during the evenings; 17 hr. ∼ 21 hr. Most of residents use the rest space with their children, partner, or family. Residents usually take walks and take a rests in the rest space. Most residents use the rest space quietly. Of the rest facilities in the outdoor rest space, benches are most used, walks and pergolas are more frequently used. But waterscape facilities are not particularly used. The satisfaction index of the outdoor rest space is generally low. However, the satisfaction index of the rest space and facilities type shows that the evaluation of rest facilities(e.g. benches) is high. The satisfaction index of the decoration shows that the evaluation for the color and design of facilities is high. In the satisfaction index of the physical environment, the item about the size of rest space is highly appreciated. In the mental satisfaction index of the rest space, the item about whole atmosphere is highly appreciated. Of the factors affecting the general satisfaction index with outdoor rest space, the factor of physical environment is the most important independent-variable. Physical environment and facilities are more important influential factors than the atmosphere of outdoor rest space. In the future, the practical study searching for the preferences of the residents and the activation of use should be preceded.

(Background and Purpose)With the diversification of consumer demand, people have paid more attention to the rest space than the function of the duty-free sales space. The rest space is a place where people rest during shopping space activities. The convenience and comfort of the space and the layout design directly affect people's satisfaction with the overall image of the duty-free store. So far, most documents for duty-free stores focus on the sales space of the duty-free store and the external floor space of the building. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial characteristics of the interior resting space of duty free shops, and to provide the basic data on the new duty free rest spaces by grasping the layout and spatial characteristics of the duty free shop resting space.(Method)The scope of this study was to analyze the spatial characteristics of six duty-free shops in Seoul. As for the research method, space characteristics for case analysis were deducted through the contemplation of precedent studies on the concept of space composition of rest spaces in duty free shops. Convenience, accessibility, awareness and comfort, which were deducted as analysis elements of rest spaces, were analyzed for each case and final conclusion was deducted through comparative analysis.(Results)The spatial characteristics of the surveyed subjects were located next to the elevators of all surveyed subjects except two cases were in order of accessibility, cognition, comfort and convenience. In all cases, professional rest spaces were installed, followed by convenience, comfort, cognition and accessibility. In other words, rest spaces are often planned to be easily accessible to shopping spaces according to the elevator location, and specialized rest spaces increase convenience by providing diversity and selectivity through various amenities and furniture arrangements, and partitioning of spaces. (Conclusions)As a result of analyzing 6 cases, cognition and comfort were the highest among rest space characteristics, followed by convenience and lowest accessibility. In most cases, the resting space is clearly distinguished from other spaces through the use of various lighting and furniture arrangements, colors, and finishes. The resting space is well controlled by temperature control, ventilation, and ventilation through the control device. In the rest space, access to the shopping area is important, and at the same time, the privacy of the resting space should be planned for the users. In addition, it is desirable to install a guide map or a sign that makes it easy to recognize the resting space, and it is necessary for people to use without inconvenience due to the number and variety of furniture, and to consider the convenience of various customers.

(Background and Purpose) In modern societies, economic development has led to an increase in people’s desire to purchase goods and services by improving people’s living standards. Recently, COVID-19 has led to an increase in online shopping, including on mobile devices, thereby changing people’s purchase behavior away from store-based purchases. Consequently, in the post-COVID era, department stores are trying to encourage consumption by providing large and spacious resting spaces to increase consumers’ visit duration. In terms of style and effectiveness, these stores have designed rest spaces that not only expand the display spaces for products but have also expanded their functions such as communication and exchange. Therefore, this study aims to provide basic data to suggest directions for designing biophilic indoor rest spaces at department stores after analyzing the current status and application of rest space design these stores. (Method) This study limited the scope of research to the indoor spaces of four department stores (research subjects) of three types in order to determine the degree of application of previously proposed biophilic design elements. Based on a literature review of prior research, four rest spaces (aisle side, escalator side, elevator hall, and rest hall) and four rest space characteristics (aesthetic, comfort, convenience, and accessibility) were derived. Biophilic design elements such as direct natural experience (seven types), indirect natural experience (three types), and spatial experience (four types) were derived by associating the 16 elements with the characteristics of each rest space. Thereafter, these elements were applied to the research subjects for field investigation and analysis. (Results) The application of the air conditioning system for air circulation, warm lighting similar to natural light, and soft indirect lighting were some of the elements that were used to confirm their effectiveness in each space in terms of aesthetics, accessibility and convenience. In addition, while two department stores built before 2021 did not have rest halls, two department stores built after 2021 changed the perception of rest spaces by combining various biophilic elements. However, after identifying the limitations of each reset space, a bibliographic design utilization plan was proposed to address issues related to aspects such as the use of water, reproduction through media, and inflow of natural light. (Conclusions) Based on the study results, we to inspire departmental stores to plan biophilic rest space designs to transform these spaces into a ”healing” space for modern consumers by providing a pleasant environment other benefits. Furthermore, this study can be act as a basis for creating better indoor rest spaces for department stores by promoting natural harmony.

This study considers rural rest spaces. The purpose of this study is to suggest rest space designs for rural villages, that makes use of underused spaces. Although rural rest space projects are part of rural development plans, they are not satisfying the demands of local residents. Also, in the case of newly created rural rest spaces, plans are usually large-scale plans, so there are difficulties with regard to selecting large sites, and thus making the space less accessible. Such problems result in poor usability of the rural rest spaces. To enhance the practicality of the rest spaces, creating scattered small-scale areas by utilizing underused spaces in rural villages is likely to be more appropriate than creating big large-scale rest areas. Therefore, this study aims to suggest rural rest space designs that utilize underused spaces. With this study, follow-up researches for designing diverse rural rest spaces are expected, to provides convenience for local residents, contribute to forming-local communities with better physical environments, and eventually enhancing the comfort and esthetics of the spaces.

(Background and Purpose) This study aimed to redesign the rest space of Busan Daeyeon subway station as the basic data for future design. It attempted to make this research applicable to other subway stations in Busan, guide Busan to build a more comfortable city, promote its development, and improve the convenience and quality of life of city dwellers. To improve the underground space requires putting forward reasonable suggestions for the development of space without damaging the ground environment. These renovations are beneficial to improve the use of underground by citizens and the value of urban underground space development. The purpose of this research is to maximize the preservation of space and facilities in public places. (Method) We emphasized the continuity and accessibility of the space for rest and focused on the elements of regional economy, lifestyle, and ecological technology in urban design. In this research, we hoped to redesign the underground rest area through technology integration, such as natural lighting system, vertical greening of walls, and negative ion ventilation system. The basic direction of underground space design was divided into (1) the healing function; (2) Green energy control function; and (3) practical function. To seek solutions to urban environmental problems and the shortage of urban public space. (Result) According to the configuration of urban space and the composition of facilities, the possibility of improvement and development of urban underground leisure space will be studied based on the survey data of the functional needs and improvement points of the respondents. At present, most of the people living near Daeyeon station are students, and the population density is relatively high. However, due to the convenient transportation, it has become the preferred residence for international students and Korean students of Pukyong National University, Kyungsung University, and Tongmyong University. However, compared to the population density, the rest space is insufficient. To solve these problems, this research used three-dimensional urban space planning. (Conclusion) Through the redesign (redevelopment) of the underground rest area of Daeyeon subway station, this research can be used as the basic data for future design, and it can be applied to other subway stations in Busan, which will enhance the urban construction of the whole Busan and promote its development. Furthermore, it improves the convenience of urban residents and improves the quality of life. Therefore, we should emphasize the continuity and accessibility of public space, and pay attention to the design elements of urban space, regional boundaries, lifestyle, ecological technology, and other urban design elements.

(Background and Purpose) The 21st century modern museum has been transformed into a place to provide various spaces according to social and economic changes, such as libraries, restaurants, cafes, educational spaces, and spaces to experience cultures, as well as exhibitions as a place for leisure and cultural activities. According to statistical data provided by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the main purposes of enjoying leisure life among modern people are to experience pleasure, relieve stress, rest the mind, and provide relaxation, indicating that the importance of rest zones has increased in modern society. However, previous studies on museums have mainly examined visitor behaviors and the composition of moving lines and space, with a focus on exhibition spaces. Moreover, research on rest zones remains inadequate and lacks a fundamental basis. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to organize the spatial characteristics of rest zones through an analysis of domestic and foreign cases by studying and reviewing rest zones in national museums. (Method) This paper examines the rest zones of national museums representing national and ethnic identities. This paper derived five characteristics, including comfort, convenience, complexity, connectivity, and accessibility, required for space design based on previous studies on rest zones, after providing an initial understanding of the concept of rest zones in national museums. In addition, this paper selected 6 representative places from home and abroad by classifying types of rest zones in national museums according to their functions and layouts. It then analyzed the cases according to the types and characteristics of rest zones and organized the detailed contents. (Results) This paper defined a rest zone as a place with cafes, restaurants with resting functions, and spaces including resting facilities and analyzed the cases of 6 domestic and foreign places based on their indoor and outdoor facilities. Regarding functional characteristics, external rest zones were mainly activated in common, showing that the open characteristic was strong. With respect to layout type, various exhibition spaces were planned on one floor in the domestic cases, but in foreign cases, characteristics of parallel arrangement were mainly created by organizing an entire floor as an exhibition space. Furthermore, as a result of analyzing the characteristics of five rest zones, comfort and accessibility received the highest scores in both the domestic and overseas cases; however, the lack of convenient facilities such as cafes and restaurants resulted in relatively low scores in terms of convenience and complexity. (Conclusion) Rest zones in museums can provide visitors with a variety of experiences and pleasures, not just rest, which can lead to an increase in the number of visitors. As the spatial characteristics for planning rest zones and the purpose of rest zones according to user types are becoming more and more diverse, further research should be conducted in the future. Finally, it is expected that the types and characteristics of rest zones found in this study will be helpful as a basic database for future research on rest zones in museums.

(Background and Purpose) Public rest areas serve as spaces that organically connect private and public realms, the everyday and the extraordinary, the past and the present, the present and the future, as well as individuals with one another. These areas play a significant role in fostering interaction and community building among users. However, the question remains: how can the value of the public be effectively manifested in these spaces? To address this, this study introduces the concept of ‘relational temporality’ as a medium for communication, which facilitates interactions between users and spaces. Relational temporality encompasses immersive, emergent, and diagonal temporal experiences, which expand user awareness, enhance interactions, and foster public relationships. This study aims to explore the application of relational temporality in public rest areas, analyze its design characteristics, and propose a new theoretical approach to public rest area design that aligns with the public good. (Method) This study was conducted in the following sequence through a review of previous studies, literature research, field surveys, and case analysis. First, prior research on the concept of relational temporality and public rest spaces was reviewed to understand the relationship between relational temporality and public rest spaces. Second, literature research and field surveys on public rest areas in Melbourne were conducted to understand the design orientation of Melbourne’s public rest areas and analyze them with a focus on relational temporality. Third, based on the results derived from the case analysis, design characteristics of public rest spaces grounded in relational temporality were identified, and design directions were suggested. (Results) The analysis revealed the following important design characteristics of public rest areas based on relational temporality. First, the irregular and three-dimensional spatial composition enhances dynamic experiences within the space, encouraging users to perceive the space from various perspectives, thereby promoting immersive temporality. Second, the fusion of natural and artificial elements enhances emergent temporality, allowing users to form personal narratives and experience harmony between natural and man-made environments. Third, the organic design with softened boundaries promotes diagonal temporality, leading users to explore the space in unexpected ways and experience new temporal dimensions. Fourth, multi-layered temporality allows users to experience a space where historical significance and present-day life coexist, enabling the formation of various temporal narratives. (Conclusions) Public rest spaces based on relational temporality enable diverse temporal experiences for users, enhancing their engagement and participation while shifting their perceptions to foster public relationships. These research findings provide a deeper understanding of the role of public spaces in supporting both individual and communal connections in future public design projects, offering important insights into new design directions.

Recently, the spatial design of resting spaces in department stores has been changed. The design elements such as colors, materials lighting, natural elements, furniture arrangement, and VMD are not only providing a pleasant and natural indoor atmosphere in resting spaces but also providing various services to customers. In this study, it aims to analyze how the spatial design characteristics of resting spaces in department stores are appeared. The results are as follow. First, the spatial characteristics of the resting spaces in department sores came up as five factors; accessibility, recognition, comfort, convenience, and esthetics. As the result, the accessibility is the most important factor in resting spaces. Second, the resting spaces was well located near by the elevators and escalators providing easy accessibility to customers to floor, Third, the resting spaces need to improve the spatial design for emphasizing the recognitions by using colors, materials and lighting. Fourth, the resting spaces were provided different atmosphere by their location. Fifth, the various forms of furniture, curved. zigzagged, and cubed, were placed in the resting spaces for comport use. Sixth, the aesthetic was the least important factor of all. To improve this problem, the resting spaces need to provide cultural contents by installing art pieces, moving picture facilities, and VMD. Seven, most of the resting spaces had similar floor plan type that they did not perform their role successfully. The resting spaces need to provide both individual rooms and unique open spaces for giving a choice to use when customers visit them.
