Vol.6 No.2

In this study, the need for digital youth activities has arisen along with non-face-to-face activities in youth activity sites after Corona 19, and many youth activity programs are being converted to non-face-to-face digital. However, many youth activity facilities are still experiencing difficulties in converting to digital youth activities due to various problems. In particular, it is a time when it is necessary to think about the approach using smartphones, which accesses all these media the most, as well as the use of websites, SNS, and YouTube channels of each institution where young people get the most information. Also, the accessibility of multicultural youth and disabled youth, who are most vulnerable to these changes, was also required to be studied. Therefore, in this paper, I tried to present the parts necessary for the transition to digital youth activities in preparation for the rapidly changing diverse and egalitarian society and the post-COVID digital society. To this end, a region called Busan was selected and the current status of digital youth activities and online platforms for public youth training facilities was fully investigated.

Vol.26 No.11

This study aimed to develop a digital activity model that connects school and out-of-school environments to strengthen youth digital competency and improve accessibility to digital activities in this era of digital transformation, and to establish measures that activate constructive digital activities. To achieve this research objective, a youth digital activity program model was developed, and measures to activate digital activities were established by qualitative analysis, literature review, interview, and the Delphi method. A program model was developed that includes youth digital activity purposes, targets, objectives, target-specific content, domain-specific content, methods, and strategies, and activation measures were derived. Specifically, the measures that activate youth digital activities were: promoting education on social values and ethics; preventing digital crime; and encouraging convergence between digital activities in school and out-of-school settings, particularly in relation to career development. We suggest that systematic and continuous competency enhancement education programs should be provided by establishing an environment for digital activities, strengthening the digital competency of youth workers, and building a collaborative system with external experts.

Same Despair but Different Hope: Youth Activism in East Asia and Contentious Politics

2018 Journal of Asian Sociology Vol.47 No.3

This study attempts a comparative analysis of the social movements of young people in East Asia. Since the 2000s, young people in East Asia have been coined as the “Three Giveup Generation” (South Korea), “Bomb Generation” (Taiwan), and “Loss Generation” (Japan), suggesting that they are in despair and lacking visions and hope for their future. However, the youths have been expressing their opinions on multiple issues in the form of organized action, such as the Anti-Constitutional Movement (Japan), the Sunflower Movement against China in the case of Taiwan, and the candlelight demonstrations and feminist protests in Korea. Though they share similar problems of youth unemployment, job insecurity, social inequality, their activism directed towards diverse issues and agendas reflecting each society’s contexts and situations. Therefore, such differences created multifaceted issues and agendas for future visions of youths. In this paper, I examined the similarities and differences of youth activism in East Asia and how they are related to the youth situation and politics in each country concerning frames and repertoires of movements. Also, based on research, I argue that young people developed their way of political engagement and contentious politics reflecting their context and conditions; therefore it is necessary to debunk ‘youth deficit model,’ which regards youth as mere victims of the society. Despite visible differences in issues and frames of contentions, East Asian youth politics share many commonalities regarding repertories such as frequent use of digital media and connections to youth cultures. First of all, the prevalent use of SNS made youth activists able to organize the boundary of campus activism reaching wider public. Secondly, the exposure to SNS and online media decreased the repressive violence towards demonstrators and created peaceful demonstrations. Therefore, diverse groups could participate in activisms and contentions. However, there are differences of critical issues in three countries’ contentions reflecting youth’s situations. Overall, the similarities and differences among the youth activism in East Asian countries revealed that, despite the shared problems of East Asia’s youths, they conjure visions and hopes for society in multifaceted ways.

Vol.11 No.4

Purpose: Digital transformation in the youth sector has focused on expanding digital activities and environments within youth facilities, enabling the continuous generation and accumulation of data on youth. However, the development of a systematic data process to support data-driven decision-making in these settings remains at an early stage. This study proposed a youth activity data processing workflow for digital transformation, based on the service design methodology. Methodology: In cooperation with the A Youth Center in Seoul, this study was conducted according to the four stages of the double diamond process: discovery, definition, idea development, and delivery. Findings: Based on the experiences of youth and certified juvenile guiders, the main stakeholders of youth activity facilities, the lack of coherent process for data collection, management, integration, and feedback was identified as the core problem. Accordingly, we developed a service blueprint to visualize the youth activity data process and iteratively advanced it through pilot data collection and stakeholder interviews to evaluate its applicability in real-world settings. Conclusions: This study developed and visualized end-to-end data processing workflow for youth activity data, from collection and management to integration and feedback, in the form of a service blueprint. This provides a practical operational foundation for establishing a data-driven decision-making system in youth facilities.

Vol.16 No.4

This study aimed to design a youth activity program for digital literacy and examine its effectiveness. After obtaining approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB), this study conducted a program with 30 youths aged 11–14 years, who were divided into the experimental group (15 participants) and control group (15 participants). The program comprised 14 sessions and lasted eight weeks. Pre- and post-survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Mann–Whitney U test, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results revealed that the program significantly increased the participants’ digital literacy. Significant improvements were observed in digital information, data utilization, and digital content creation and expression. These findings indicate that youth activity programs focusing on participation effectively promote digital literacy. Consequently, this study recommends designing participatory programs that reflect youths’ interests and needs, establishing a foundation for collaborative growth among youth workers, conducting comprehensive analyses of factors affecting digital literacy, and developing policies to facilitate the dissemination and sustainable implementation of digital literacy programs.

Vol.38 No.3

This article examines the adolescents’ experiences of sexual violence in digital media space in the context of gender order. It employs a narrative inquiry to analyze the stories of four youths who experienced digital sexual violence. This study found the following: First, the digital media space is space where youths are at risk of gender-based violence, while simultaneously is a space to form identities, build relationships, resist and learn. Second, the research participants objectify their experience of digital sexual assault as a socio-structural problem, an attack on feminists, or something raunchy and unpleasant. It is a survival strategy they employ to minimize the damage of the violence. Third, only those with available resources and networks can objectify their experience, whereas those disconnected from the discourse cannot. Fourth, digital sexual violence develops into a source of fear when it poses physical threats offline. On these accounts, adolescents‘ survival strategies in a digital space tend to be inadequate to provide safety from violence. These findings suggest that gender order in digital space needs to be carefully considered to address the issue of digital sexual violence in adolescents. They also imply that institutional and policy-related efforts are required for our society to imagine adolescents as subjects who can express their sexuality.

2025 Studies on Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSC) Vol.7 No.6

This study examines how internet memes facilitate political identity formation and digital activism among Moroccan youth under authoritarian governance, analyzing the 2025 “GenZ 212” movement through systematic analysis of 541 memes collected from TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Discord. Integrating Dawkins’ meme theory with Castells’ network society framework, the research employs thematic coding, critical discourse analysis, and network analysis with verified inter-rater reliability (Cohen’s Kappa=0.80). The findings reveal that memes performed four interconnected functions: satire and mockery (37.5%), identity expression (32.9%), information transmission (17.9%), and mobilization (11.6%), predominantly addressing government policy criticism (34.6%), youth identity articulation (28.8%), and inequality denunciation (18.1%). Approximately 68 percent of analyzed memes simultaneously expressed national, generational, and regional identities, demonstrating how digital platforms enable negotiation of multiple subject positions. Most significantly, the study documents successful online-to-offline activist conversion, with 72.3 percent of street protest participants obtaining mobilization information through digital platforms. The analysis reveals platform-specific divisions wherein TikTok and Instagram enabled viral dissemination, Facebook facilitated political discourse, and Discord provided organizational infrastructure. Under conditions of restricted democratic communication, memes function as structured instruments of political resistance, enabling youth to translate cultural creativity into substantive political action. These findings underscore the necessity for democratic governance frameworks permitting genuine civic dialogue and comprehensive youth policy reforms addressing socioeconomic grievances.

Vol.65 No.-
