Korea and China are geographically connected neighbors, and the two countries have been active in political, economic and cultural exchanges since ancient times. Historically, the two countries shared the same cultural circle of "Chinese characters". Therefore, there are close links in many ways. Mutual influence, common development, both common and different cultural characteristics. The chosun dynasty was the last feudal dynasty in Korea, and China was under the Ming Dynasty from the beginning. The two dynasties had very close contacts from the very beginning. Influenced by the Ming Dynasty, the chosun Dynasty ruled by Confucianism. In terms of economy and culture, the two dynasties were also closely linked. In particular, the cultural influence of the Korean royal family was very great. In terms of clothing, it formed a feature similar to that of the Ming Dynasty, which was wide robe with large sleeves under the jacket. In China, the Qing dynasty was the last feudal dynasty. From the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, many reforms were carried out. In terms of political system, Confucianism was also adopted. As the Qing dynasty was established by the manchu ethnic minority, it retained the national customs and combined with the Han cultural system of the Ming Dynasty, forming the characteristics of the Qing royal family's body-hugging narrow sleeve robe in costume. Both dynasties were influenced by the Ming Dynasty in their costumes, but they also formed their own unique styles with national characteristics. The dress styles that best represent the two dynasties are those of the royal family. The application of the fabric, craft, pattern and color of the dress represents the highest level of the two dynasties at that time. Especially the various types of royal women's clothing, such as the royal women's clothing in the chosun Dynasty, Zhai Yi, lou Yi, Chang sang, Yuan Sang, Tang Yi; The imperial women's clothing of the Qing Dynasty, such as court dress, dragon robe, ordinary dress and casual dress, showed the most gorgeous beauty of costume aesthetics at that time, and had a profound influence on the costume culture of the later generations. On the basis of such historical background, around one of the royal women dress features of decoration pattern as the research center, refer to the literature, the two countries from the pattern process modelling, the kinds of fabric, color characteristics, organization form and yili crown marriage funeral offering five aspects of thinking, the Chosun Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty royal women patterns for comparative analysis, the analysis of the results are as follows: The types of royal female clothing patterns in the Chosun Dynasty and Qing Dynasty include plant patterns, animal patterns, auspicious character patterns and other patterns with implied meanings. The types of patterns are rich, and the contents of different types of patterns have symbolic meanings. In modeling, both dynasties were influenced by Confucianism, and respected the natural laws in the expression of patterns, which were expressed in costumes with realistic modeling styles. The pattern modeling of the Korean era is characterized by simple and simple lines, and the pursuit of the beauty of harmony and rhythm. The pattern of Qing Dynasty is characterized by complex lines, rich levels of modeling, and the pursuit of full and magnificent beauty. There are similarities and differences in the patterns of the two dynasties. This fully shows that due to the different cultural customs and aesthetic pursuit, the shape characteristics of the pattern has also had an impact. In the fabric technology, the fabric of the royal women's clothing in the two dynasties are based on precious silk. Among them, there are four kinds of silk fabrics, such as satin, yarn, brocade and chou which represent the main clothing of women of the chosun royal family. The representative fabrics of Qing imperial women's main clothes are silk, satin, yarn and brocade. In terms of the pattern of fabric, it was mainly woven by dark brocade jacquard, weaving gold and gold foil. But many of the royal family's most expensive fabrics were purchased from China, where weaving technology was so advanced. The weaving of patterns in the Qing Dynasty was mainly based on the weaving of gold, makeup and kesi techniques of "Yun Brocade", among which yun brocade was designated as the royal tribute in the palace, representing the highest level of weaving technology. In addition to the techniques of weaving patterns, the two dynasties also had typical embroidery techniques, which were very rich and even reached dozens of kinds. Korean times in the fabric pattern performance, Prefer recessive dark patterns, pattern to simple, dignified and elegant. Embroidery craft as a whole lively needlework, simple and simple patterns, simple and steady color. The Qing Dynasty's fabric patterns were characterized by fine weaving, exquisite patterns, gorgeous brocade patterns and luxurious and elegant styles. The embroidery process had a unique style of full shape, meticulous embroidery, lively needlework and bright colors. In terms of color, both the Chosun Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty carried out color matching based on the theory of Yin-yang and five elements. Combined with their own folk customs and the needs of the ruling class, formed their own unique color style. The pursuit of bright and simple beauty in The Korean era reflects the pursuit of natural harmony, forming the Korean nation's preference for simple and elegant colors. The color characteristic of royal female dress pattern is simple and elegant, gorgeous. The Qing Dynasty pursued bright colors, beautiful colors and strong contrast. The royal women's dress patterns are characterized by various and delicate colors, harmonious and natural colors, gorgeous and rich. In the form of organization, the patterns of the Chosun Dynasty and Qing Dynasty consist of separate patterns, suitable patterns, continuous patterns and corner patterns. The organization form of corner pattern is peculiar to Qing Dynasty. The clothing patterns of the two dynasties were mainly distributed in the shoulder, cuff, chest, back, collar around and hem for decoration. The two dynasties have the composition characteristics of living Chinese style, symmetrical style and full floor style in the organization form of individual patterns. The two dynasties were very different in the form of organization suitable for the pattern, that is, the framework of the outline. In the Chosun Dynasty, there was a square outline and no center in the composition of the pattern, which was distributed in the costume in a parallel way, up, down, left and right. The Qing Dynasty was dominated by the shape of a group, and different forms of composition were used to decorate the clothes around the central pattern of the group. Both dynasties had two continuous and four continuous arrangement patterns in the organization form of continuous patterns. In the two-sided continuous organization, the pattern composition of the chosun Dynasty has vertical and scattered forms. The decorative patterns of the Qing Dynasty were vertical, corrugated and scattered. In the continuous organization form of four sides, the types of decorative patterns in the Korean era are more than those in the Qing Dynasty, and the composition forms are connected type and scattered type. The overall composition space of the patterns is relatively dense. The decorative patterns of the Qing Dynasty are rich and gorgeous in color, and the composition forms are interlocking, overlapping and scattered. In the overall composition of patterns, dark patterns and bright patterns are arranged in an orderly or disordered way. Crown marriage and funeral sacrifice is the system, rules and a social consciousness in ancient rites of concrete expression. It is of great significance to the governance and regulation of the whole society. Dress is a form of ceremonial ceremony to show the image of beauty and status of a form. The two cultures were compared in order to comprehensively grasp the cultural value and aesthetic characteristics of the formation and development of the royal women's dress patterns through the official wedding ceremonies of the two dynasties. The result indicated that the pattern not only simply revealed the external beauty of the image, but also performed for the political life of the ruling class, but also serves for the political life of the ruling class. In the ceremony activities of coronation and funeral sacrifice, there are specific requirements of coronation and funeral sacrifice system for the wearing of clothes, but the characteristics of patterns are not completely changed by the ceremony of coronation and funeral sacrifice, but are decorated by the positioning and display level of the clothing itself. The implied meaning of the pattern itself can better reflect the multiple roles of clothing in the ritual, which well meets the cultural aesthetic needs of the ruling class and the authority of the ruling position. Based on the above research results. This paper is of great significance to the study of the comparison of royal female clothing patterns in the Chosun Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty through the comparative analysis of the types and shapes of patterns, fabric technology, color characteristics, organizational forms and other ways. Not only did the author deeply understand the similarities and differences between the royal women's clothing patterns of the two dynasties from an all-round and multi-perspective, but also from the perspective of "rites", the author deeply understood the role of the patterns in the society and the cultural connotation and aesthetic characteristics formed from the ceremony of crown marriage, funeral and sacrifice. It is hoped that this thesis will contribute to the future research and design application of clothing culture in the two countries. It was suggested that in-depth research should be conducted in detail in the future. It is also expected to supplement the limited resources and data collection of this study to expand the scope of the study of costume not only to the royal family but also to society as a whole in relation to the culture of costume in both countries.
Zhang, Lin
The late Ming and early Qing Dynasty is regarded as the prosperous period of Chinese garden history and the active period of gardening with the development of commercial economy and the great changes of society. In particular, the Jiangnan area with Suzhou and Yangzhou as the center is a popular area for private gardens. A large number of excellent gardeners such as Zhang Nanyuan, Ji Cheng, Wen Zhenheng and Li Yu, etc. appeared in this period. They were active in the prosperous cities in the south of the Yangtze River, and built many famous gardens. Based on their accumulated experience in gardening, they left behind works of high reference value for later generations. Among them, the well-known gardening works are Yuanye by Ji Cheng, Changwuzhi by Wen Zhenheng and Xianqingouji by Li Yu, etc. So far, the theoretical research of Chinese traditional garden has focused on the analysis and utilization of the above works, and the theory as the basis of traditional garden design and construction has not deviated from the theory established in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty. Among them, a lot of research has been done on the monograph Yuanye in the field of landscape architecture. However, the comparative study based on the representative works of Wen Zhenheng’s Changwuzhi and Li Yu’s Xianqingouji, has not yet systematically comparison analyzed their gardening theory in combination with their social background and their respective living background. Therefore, this study focuses on the following five research questions with the above two works. 1. In the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, Wen Zhenheng, who represents the literati and officialdom, and Li Yu, who represents the ordinary class, respectively. What are the similarities and differences between the gardening theories reflected in their representative works Changwuzhi and Xianqingouji? 2. In the social background including life, family and main activity history of the two gardeners, what are their motivations for editing Changwuzhi and Xianqingouji? How did their respective living backgrounds affect their gardening theories? 3. According to the classification of the overall space composition and garden elements, what are the similarities and differences of garden theories reflected in the two works? 4. How can the value of the common orientation of painting and garden be reflected in the garden? 5. How did Wen Zhenheng’s and Li Yu’s gardening theories be reflected in their actual gardening cases? This study consisted of a total of five chapters, and Chapter 1 covered the background and purpose of the study, the object and method of the study, the trend of research, and the framework of interpretation. Specific methods of research include literature research, inductive analysis, comparative studies, and their actual gardening cases by two gardeners in Jiangnan area. In this study, the previous research includes ‘research trends of domestic and foreign studies on their representative works Changwuzhi and Xianqingouji’ and ‘the comparison with other garden works’. Through the above, to summarize the framework of this study. Subsequently, Chapter 2 analyzed the background and culture of the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty. This part was specifically summarized into three parts: 1) the background of the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty, 2) the gardening culture of the Jiangnan area, 3) gardeners, their works and their gardening activities. Under the political, economic and cultural background of the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty, many private gardens appeared in Jiangnan area. From literati and rich merchants to ordinary class, there was a upsurge of gardening activities. In the process of gardening in Jiangnan area, the gardeners left rich practical experience and rich relics. In particular, the literati gardeners with humanistic accomplishment have systematized and theorized their gardening experience through their works. In this period, most of the gardening theoretical works emerge as the times require. Chapter 3 focuses on the representative gardeners Wen Zhenheng, Li Yu and their two works Changwuzhi and Xianqingouji. This section was specifically summarized into three parts: 1) Wen Zhenheng’s career and works, 2) Li Yu’s career and works, 3) comprehending of these two works Changwuzhi and Xianqingouji. At the end of Ming Dynasty and the beginning of Qing Dynasty, the great influence on them changed from ‘political pursuit’ to ‘cultural creation’. However, the two gardeners came from completely different classes, and they are very different in the pursuit of ‘cultural creation’. And the styles of their works Changwuzhi and Xianqingouji are also different. Wen Zhenheng’s Changwuzhi criticizes the secular culture and puts forward some suggestions on the noble and elegant culture that the literati should follow. In a word, it could be said that Changwuzhi target readers are literati. However, Xianqingouji is simple and easy to understand, and the content is monotonous, which explains Zhuangzi(莊子)’s thought easily. Most of the readers who have subscribed to his works are of the ordinary class. In Chapter 4, based on the methodology of previous research, the framework of interpretation is set up from two levels of ‘overall space composition’ and ‘garden elements’. From the perspective of the overall space composition, it is divided into ‘site selection and spatial layout’, ‘the importance of overall structure and spatial scale’, ‘the combination of spatial garden elements’ and ‘spatial segmentation’. From the perspective of garden elements, it is divided into ‘architecture’, ‘water element’, ‘stone’, ‘plant’, and analyzes the similarities and differences of garden theories in detail. On the basis of this, this study synthesizes the ‘gardening theories’ which appears in these two works, including their philosophical thought, life attitude and value orientation. The main gardening theories are ‘seclusion’, ‘getting rid of prosperity and luxury’, ‘pursuing every scene as a painting’, ‘with a small see big’, ‘pursuing elegance culture’ and ‘pursuing innovative culture’. The last chapter is the significance and limitations of this study. In the history of Chinese garden, the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty was a period when the popularization of gardens accelerated and construction was carried out extensively relying on popular culture. In this period, the representative literati who advocated popular culture established the theoretical framework of garden construction in that era through garden works. At the same time, it also puts forward the style of ‘literati garden’ which reflects the ‘idea of the times’. They use a wide range of knowledge and experience to explain the ideal garden space through specific garden elements and interior decoration etc. Focusing on this point, this study takes two works as the center to explore their ‘gardening theory’, as a small reference point to explain the garden culture in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty. However, the limitation of this study focuses on the comparative study, which specifically explains Wen Zhenheng’s Changwuzhi and Li Yu’s Xianqingouji. However, there is no detailed introduction to other gardeners of the same era. It will supplement and perfect the gardening theories of other gardeners in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty. In addition, future studies will identify areas requiring extensive field surveys and additional literature studies.
The Five Cardinal Colored Theory is the most influential color theory in Chinese history. The Five Cardinal Colors can be traced back to the primitive period of China, and through the fusion of theories such as Yin Yang, Taoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism, traditional Chinese color theory has been formed. The theory of the five Cardinal colors has been continuously developing and changing in the long river of Chinese history, and can be said to be the result of the application of philosophical ideas such as Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism to the ideological needs of the Chinese people after their influence and common development in different eras. In the Qing Dynasty, the theory of the Five Cardinal Colors was influenced by more than 5000 years of cultural thought, and the cultural connotations and social applications of the Five Cardinal Colors also changed with the cultural, ideological, and ethnic factors of each dynasty. The Qing Dynasty was the last imperial dynasty ruled by ethnic minorities in Chinese history, and also the last dynasty with a color system in existence in China. With the end of the Qing Dynasty, the overall color of China gradually became blurred. Although the dynasty was destroyed, with the development of society, the modern color of China has had a significant impact. In modern China, the usage of ceremonial colors during the period of Chinese imperial rule still influences modern designers and researchers. Therefore, in order to better apply colors to design, it is necessary to track the history of colors. By exploring the historical development of traditional Chinese colors and understanding the cultural connotations behind colors, we aim to integrate Chinese traditional characteristics with modern color science. Therefore, this paper first discusses what pentagonal colors are through the generation and establishment of pentagonal colors. Secondly, based on the historical order, analyze the use of the five colors in clothing colors in representative portrait paintings of various dynasties in China, and explore the use of the five Cardinal colors in different dynasties. Thirdly, a practical investigation was conducted on the attire of the Qing Dynasty court at the Beijing Palace Museum, and the color characteristics of the attire were analyzed. Based on the above research, the following research results have been obtained. Firstly, in-depth literature and case studies were conducted on the five Cardinal colors. Through a detailed review of this section, it can be understood as follows. 1. The five Cardinal colors are colors and concepts deeply ingrained in the cultural system, reflecting the thoughts and political concepts of ancient society. To gain a deeper understanding of the origins of the five Cardinal colors, it is necessary to trace them back to the primitive era. Early primitive humans with unstable living conditions mainly focused on basic survival desires and did not pay special attention to natural colors. However, as the quality of life gradually improves, humans begin to pay attention to the surrounding environment, gradually recognizing, creating, and endowing various colors with meaning. Especially during the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties in China, the black, white, red, yellow, and blue color system based on the Yin Yang and Five Elements ideology was gradually established and widely recognized. This system has not only become an important component of the Yin Yang and Five Elements ideology, but has also been used as a tool to maintain social order and rank in the imperial power system of multiple dynasties. Since then, the Five Cardinal Colors have undergone over 3000 years of evolution with the development of Chinese history and still influence every aspect of society to this day. 2. Through in-depth analysis of 'Yufu Zhi' and detailed research and analysis of clothing colors in character paintings, it was found that there were significant differences in the requirements and color levels of clothing etiquette colors among different dynasties. Throughout the development history of ancient Chinese ceremonial clothing, clothing colors have played an important role in distinguishing social classes. The main color used by ancient emperors, royal families, and nobles was the regular color in the five Cardinal colors, while the intermediate colors in the five Cardinal colors were mostly used as decorative colors for clothing. Although there are differences in the ideological and political support theories of ruling classes and dynasties in terms of clothing and etiquette colors in different periods, these differences have consistency due to the inheritance of Chinese philosophical thinking system. 3. The rulers of the Qing Dynasty were the Manchu ethnic minority. In order to better govern the Han ethnic group, they generally followed the political ideology of the Five Directions and maintained the class nature of the clothing system. In terms of color, while inheriting tradition, the Qing Dynasty retained the positive color of the five Cardinal colors and made more precise distinctions of the class nature of colors. The rulers of the Qing Dynasty, as nomadic people, liked the colors of blue, green, pink, and other natural colors, which were often used in the clothing colors of the royal family and nobles. 4. The arrogance of color class in the clothing colors of the Qing Dynasty was a prominent feature. In the color scheme of imperial clothing during the Qing Dynasty, intermediate colors such as pink and blue were widely used, which were not common or rarely used in previous dynasties. The reason for this change is not only related to the rulers of the Manchu and Qing dynasties, but also to the introduction of Western culture during the Qing dynasty. This preference of the imperial aristocracy for intermediate colors has influenced the preference of other social classes for color application, confusing the color class characteristics of the pentagonal colors. Due to the transcendence of color class use, the color class characteristics are gradually broken, and the class characteristics of the pentagonal colors disappear.
This study is on the medical education system of the Joseon Dynasty. The difference between this study and previous studies is that this study is a comparative study between medical education systems of those three Dynasty. And through this comparison this study more reveals the features of the medical education system of Joseon Dynasty. The materials used in this study are the dynastic annals, collections of codes, manual books of medical institutions, and the method of this study is reviewing those literature materials. In the first chapter, this study presents an outline of the medical institutions of the Joseon, Ming and Qing Dynasty and compares them. The comparison criteria are the relationship between a medical administrative office and a medical education office, The involvement of senior government officials, the presence of a medical administrative office for women, and the degree of centralization. In the second chapter, this study presents how the medical personnel were selected in the Joseon, Ming and Qing Dynasty. The methods how to select the medical personnel by the dynasties are cultivating people to inherit medicine, giving people a chance of applying for a state examination, employing medical practitioners, entitling someone who grants his government money a medical student. In the third chapter, this study presents how the governments provide education to their medical students. The Joseon government has ‘SibHak(十學)’system which has 10 categories of technical works, and in which medicine is included. Medical students of the Joseon Dynasty are dispersed in the medical education offices named ‘JeonUiGam(典醫監)’ and ‘HyeMinSeo(惠民署),’ and educated there. On the other hand, Medical students of the Ming and Qing Dynasties study medicine in the medical education office named ‘TaeUiWon(太醫院).’ In the third chapter, this study presents the comparison of medical textbooks. The medical textbooks of the Joseon Dynasty can be categorized into five groups, and this study tries to explain the reason why these group can be categorized. And what differences exist in the medical textbooks of the Ming and Qing Dynasty against those of the Joseon Dynasty are explained. In the third chapter, this study presents the medical education tests of the Joseon and the Qing Dynasty which has their examples. Oral examinations are used in the Joseon Dynasty, and written tests are used in the Qing Dynasty. These two forms of testing reflect the values that were important in each dynasty. Written tests used in the Qing Dynasty are related to the popularity of ‘PalGoMun(八股文)’ which is a sentence format used in a state examination. Oral examinations used in the Joseon Dynasty reflects the fact that learning in Confucian scriptures was important in that time. In the third chapter, this study presents the status of a official doctor in these dynasties. Through this, it is confirmed that the Joseon doctors received better treatment than the doctors of the Ming and Qing Dynasty. The Joseon government was greatly influenced by Ming and Qing's system. Nevertheless, it has been confirmed that there are many differences in the medical system between them. It suggests that the Joseon government's perception of medicine was different from Ming and Qing government. The existence of these differences helps us to understand the characteristics of Korean traditional medicine more clearly. Further studies are needed on the comparison with the medical education system of Japan.

The Great Navigation changed the pattern of world trade, and Europe began to expand trade worldwide. As a former world economic center, China should respond to this situation. This article places the changes in foreign trade policies during the Ming and Qing dynasties in the context of world trade, and explores the success or failure of foreign trade policies in the Ming and Qing dynasties by studying the internal and external factors that affect China's economy and studying the different trading systems at home and abroad. China and European countries have different trading systems, and European countries have established a commercial monopoly trading system that relies on state violence to maintain. In this trading system, the principle of respecting the strong, conquering and being conquered is pursued. On the contrary, China has established a tribute system that relies on its own economic and cultural attractiveness, and private trade is often suppressed. The stability of the tributary system depends on the economic and cultural strength of China. This article includes an introduction, a conclusion, and four other chapters. The introduction introduces the basic content of the article, including the research purpose, previous research results, and research methods. The second chapter briefly describes China's main trade ports and major international trade routes since the Tang Dynasty. Although China is still the world's trade center, the rise of European merchants cannot be ignored. They have reached various parts of the world through new routes and occupied important strongholds on international trade routes, beginning to pose challenges to China's trade status. The third chapter mainly studies the reasons for the evolution of foreign trade policies during the Ming Dynasty, analyzing the changes of foreign trade policies in the Ming Dynasty from both internal and external causes. In the early Ming Dynasty, the trade between Europe and China had not yet started on a large scale. Although European merchants had the support of national force, they were heavily dependent on China economically. Therefore, a pattern of fair competition and interdependence between Chinese and Western merchants was temporarily formed. However, due to the neglect of private commerce by the Chinese government, under the armed aggression of European countries, Southeast Asian countries gradually became colonies, and the Asian maritime trade network was controlled by European merchants, laying the foundation for further invasion of China by European countries. Based on the previous chapter, Chapter IV explores the new changes in the pattern of Sino Western trade after China entered the Qing Dynasty. Reveal the defects of trade policies from the differences and interactions between Chinese and Western trade policies. After a brief sea ban, the Qing government cleared the sea border and, stimulated by overseas market demand, opened customs. Chinese merchants began to trade at sea, with tea, silk, and porcelain becoming the main export commodities. However, at this time, European countries had completed their commercial monopoly on the Asian market, and important trading ports and routes were controlled by European merchants. Chinese merchants were suppressed and excluded by Western merchants, and Western merchants often did not comply with the law in China. In order to control the behavior of foreign businessmen, the Qing government had to change its trade policy of opening up after Kangxi's opening up of the sea and turn to conservatism. The Qing government did not want to recognize trade between countries and act as the main body of trade exchanges between China and the West. Therefore, once overseas trade posed a challenge to the trade order and national sovereignty of the Qing Dynasty, the Qing government could only restrict the development of foreign trade through such tools as the Thirteen Elements, rather than actively seeking to open up and solve the problem. The fifth chapter mainly studies the impact of foreign policies on China's economy through the analysis of the previous four chapters, and reflects on the success or failure of foreign trade policies in the Ming and Qing dynasties from the perspective of economic changes. Considering mainly from the perspective of trade itself, although China's total foreign trade volume is increasing, its trade dominance is gradually losing sight, and the market share of tea and porcelain is gradually being replaced by Western merchants, while inland merchants are also being suppressed. To sum up, although it appears that the changes in foreign trade policies during the Ming and Qing dynasties were motivated by the Chinese government's proactive adjustment for economic considerations, in essence, the state machinery heavily interfered with the free market economy, and the interests of the government and private merchants were also inconsistent. In the context of the era of great navigation, the government even more needs to provide support and protection for its own merchants. However, when faced with problems, the Chinese government often achieves its own goals at the expense of the interests of merchants, so the decline of trade is inevitable.
This study was conducted with the purpose of analyzing the formative characteristics of cabinets produced during the Qing Dynasty in China, identifying the aesthetics and formativeness expressed in Qing Dynasty furniture, and providing basic data for research on Chinese culture and furniture. Among them, the cabinet is one of the representative pieces of furniture from the Qing Dynasty. The shape of the cabinets can be traced back to bronze vessels such as “bronze gilt” from the Shang Dynasty. Since then, life-styles have changed and the functions of cabinets have become more diverse, and various names such as “wardrobe”, “many-treasures boxes”, “table cabine”, “bookcase”, and “cupboard” have appeared. The analysis of the formative characteristics of cabinets from the Qing Dynasty was conducted by dividing 165 cases by type and classifying them into form and structure, decoration, materials, and joint production techniques from a formative perspective. The specific research results are as follows. First, looking at the results of the distribution of cases by overall type of cabinet, wardrobe appeared the most with 44 points, followed by others with 35 points, many-treasures boxes with 33 points, bookcase with 23 points, and table cabine with 21 points, “cupboard” with 9 points. Among them, wardrobe are the most common and essential furniture and appear the most because they have the highest use in daily life. In addition, cases related to “others” account for a relatively high proportion, which well reflects the characteristics of diversity in furniture types during the Qing Dynasty. Second, wardrobe includes both large and small sizes and mainly refers to furniture that stores bedding, clothing, underwear, valuables, and decorations. The structural parts of the wardrobe mainly consisted of eight parts: top cabinet, cover plate, pillar, door shaf, door leaf, latch rod, cabinet belly and furniture dental board. Among them, the most common wardrobe shape was “rectangular”, and a notable feature was that “square” pillars appeared more often than “circular” pillar. In addition, “none” appeared most often in top cabinet, cover plate, door shaft and cabinet belly, while those that had Latch rod and furniture dental board in common appeared the most. The average proportion of the wardrobe was 1 : 1.9 : 3.5, and the height of a large wardrobe was usually 150 to 300 (cm), while the height of a small wardrobe was usually 70 to 120 (cm). The decoration of the wardrobe mainly featured a number of “plant patterns” and “animal patterns,” pursuing the decorativeness of the furniture while also showing its naturalness. Additionally, the use of various metal decorations is also a prominent feature of wardrobe decoration during the Qing Dynasty. The most common decoration production technique was the inlay technique. In the case of materials, “rosewood + metal” accounts for the largest proportion, and wood is mainly used, and wood and metal materials are often used in combination. Lastly, the most common joint production technique was the combination of “zongjiao tenon + gejian tenon.” Third, the many-treasures boxes is a space formed by multiple layers of partitions of different sizes and heights, and refers to furniture that not only has the functional ability to store items, but also has the function of associating items and combining them. The structural parts of the multimeter are mainly composed of seven parts, including the backboard, yatiao, pillar, drawer, bottom cabine, furniture dental board and base. Among them, many-treasures boxes with ‘rectangular’ shapes and “square” pillar were found to be the most common. In addition, it can be noted that, other than the base, the most common thing that has a backboard, yatiao, drawer, bottom cabine, furniture dental board is shown. Through this, the many-treasures boxes of the Qing Dynasty in China mainly had a symmetrical and stable rectangular shape, and the structure of the inner part and the division of space tended to be diverse and complex. The average proportion of many-treasures boxes was 1 : 2.5 : 4.0, and the largest many-treasures boxes was 46 × 162 × 224 (cm), in comparison, the smallest polymeter was 22 × 52 × 45 (cm) and show a big difference. The decoration of many-treasures boxes includes the ‘回’ patterns and “floral patterns.” The decoration of metal fittings also shows complexity and diversity, with “rosewood + metal” taking up the largest proportion of materials, and the joint production technique of the “zongjiao tenon + gejian tenon” combination was most common. The most common decoration production technique was the line carving technique. Fourth, the Bookcase has a “class” structure, that is, it has a “class” at the top and a cabinet at the bottom, meaning furniture mainly used to store books, newspapers, and magazines. The structural parts of the Bookcase mainly consist of eight parts: the cover plate, compartment, backboard, quankou, railing, drawer, furniture dental board and pillar. The compartment is a unique structure of the bookcase, and it was found that the two-story upper level bookcase were the most common. In addition, the most common ones were those with cover plate, backboard, drawer and furniture dental board, which is because the bookcase serves more of a storage function. The average proportion of the bookcase was 1 : 2.2 : 4.4, and the largest bookcase was 53.3 × 111.8 × 223.5 (cm) and the smallest bookcase was 25 × 52 × 110 (cm). This is because the bookcase has a variety of ‘high-level’ structures, so “kunmen decoration” appears relatively frequently. The most common decoration production technique was the inlay technique. The material for the bookcase is most often a combination of ‘scentedrosewood + metal’ and “rosewood + metal,” and the joint production technique of the “zongjiao tenon + gejian tenon” combination is used most often. Fifth, the many-treasures boxes is a piece of furniture equipped with various drawer, shelf and door leaf, and is mainly used to store books, stationery, etc. The structural parts of the table cabine were mainly composed of six parts: lattice, pillar, quankou, fence, drawer and furniture dental board. Among them, the three-story lattice Table cabine were the most common, and the most common were those with a “rectangular” shape and “square” pillar. In addition, most of them were those without both quankou and fence, but on the other hand, there were many examples where drawer and furniture dental board were used together. This is because the Table cabine is composed of several layers of grid, and quankou and fence can match the structure. The average proportion of the Table cabine was 1 : 2.2 : 4.1, and the largest table cabine was 57 × 114 × 223 (cm) and the smallest table cabine was 20 × 34 × 48 (cm). The decoration of the table cabine is mainly characterized by expressing the complexity and beauty of the decoration by using a single pattern rather than expressing it extravagantly through a combination of various patterns. The most common decoration production technique was the fillet technique. The material for the table cabinet was the combination of “scentedrosewood + metal,” which accounted for the largest proportion, and the joint manufacturing technique using the combination of “zongjiao tenon + gejian tenon” was the most common. Sixth, the cupboard refers to a cabinet used for storing dishes, plates, and other tableware. In kitchens or restaurants, cupboards are commonly used to organize and store various dishes, plates, and other utensils. The structure of the cupboard is typically composed of six elements: top panel, pillars, door hinge, space between panels, lower panel, and decorative elements. The average proportions of the cupboard was 1 : 1.9 : 3.5, and the largest cupboard measured 64 × 110 × 200 (cm), while the smallest measured 26 × 45.5 × 58.5 (cm). cupboard decorations often feature a base pattern of “grid design,” combining various patterns to express the complexity and beauty of the decoration. The predominant technique in cupboard decoration was the “carving technique.” Additionally, the most common material for cupboard was a combination of “Dalbergiaodorifera + metal,” and the assembly technique most frequently used was the combination of “changduan tenon + mengzhouaowo tenon + gejian tenon.” Seventh, the structural parts of the “other” cabinet mainly consisted of six types, including the cover plate, door leaf, drawer, furniture dental board, base and pillar. The most common shape was “rectangular,” and most often had the structures of cover plate, door leaf, drawer, furniture dental board and base. Through this, the fields corresponding to “other” mainly appeared in the most stable “rectangular” shape and had a complexity of internal space division. In addition, the analysis of the shape of the pillar showed a tendency to diversify, with square pillar being used the most, and other forms such as “S-shape,” “column-shape,” “cone-shape,” “people-shape,” and “circular” appear. The average proportion of the “other” cabinet was 1 : 2.2 : 3.5, and the largest cabinet was 33.7 × 120 × 229.2 (cm) and the smallest cabinet was 29 × 98 × 29 (cm). In addition, the types of cabinets corresponding to others are complex and diverse, so the results of proportionality analysis were also diverse. In addition, various decorative patterns emerged in the analysis of decoration, such as the unique shape and structure of the “other” cabinets. This is characterized by showing various types of decoration without focusing on specific decorations and patterns. The largest proportion of materials is the combination of “raw lacquer + gold foil + metal,” and the joint manufacturing technique combining “ flat right angle joint + pingjian tenon” was used the most. The most common decoration production technique was the inlay technique.

Academic specialization based on Western learning was one of the features that distinguished Chinese academic tradition in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries from that of the past. The ways and channels through which Western studies were imported into China, and the impact they had on the traditional academic system, have been the subject of sustained attention in the academic world. However, due to cultural and traditional academic differences, disciplinary orientations could not be easily transformed and integrated into the new system of subdisciplines. In particular, the discipline of "chinese subject" was first conceptualized as an academic classification, and then turned back to the academic tradition in search of a classification system. Therefore, "Chinese(語文,yuwen)" was not passively transformed in the sense of unidirectional communication, but rather, it was proactively transformed into a new form of learning that was neither Western nor traditional. Looking back at the evolution of the academic division of modern China and the background of the discipline of Chinese subject, the establishment of the discipline of Chinese subject was reflected in the categorization of the disciplines of various new schools at the end of the Qing Dynasty, and then in the statutes of various new schools and the curriculum plans formulated by the government. Although the establishment of the subject of Chinese was influenced by the experience of the Japanese school system, its internal division and vicissitude were closely related to the external social needs and the internal development of the subject, and this change can be clearly observed in the Chinese textbooks. With the formation and development of the Chinese subjects, the importance of Chinese became more and more prominent, which further demanded that the quality of Chinese textbooks should be upgraded. From the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China, the writing of textbooks changed in terms of science and systematization, with the private publishing industry playing a leading role in this process. The increasingly standardized arrangement of Chinese textbooks not only reflected the gradual departure of Chinese textbooks from the educational tradition of book-led subjects in the late Qing and early Republican period, but also reflected the formation and development of a sense of chinese subjects under the influence of the foreign school system. Although the government attempted to regulate the content of Chinese textbooks, this does not mean that the content of textbooks was entirely influenced by government policy. Taking the selection and arrangement of characters and stories as a clue, the changes in the content and selection of materials in elementary school chinese textbooks in the late Qing and early Republican period reveal the difference and resonance between the values of the writers and the government's policies. The textbooks of the late Qing dynasty were deeply influenced by traditional texts and continued the experience of elementary education since the Song and Yuan dynasties. In the early Republican era, although still influenced by local educational traditions, they also began to introduce Western moral education materials. Although the context of the transition from the Qing regime to the Republic of China was reflected in the content of textbooks at that time, the changes in the selection of textbook content should not be viewed simply as an incidental product of political movements, but rather as the result of a combination of the adoption of traditional educational experiences, a renewed sense of subject matter, and changes in pedagogical needs. As tradition knowledge was no longer the only source of knowledge, Chinese textbooks gradually moved away from the traditional academic sources on which they had relied in the past when confronted with the basis of yuwen society's argumentation about the legitimacy of the real world and social ideas. Thus, from the end of the Qing dynasty onwards, chinese textbooks was not only to fulfill the task of developing reading and writing skills, but also to contribute to the construction of national culture. Among the changes in the construction of traditional moral concepts and political legitimacy reflected in the selection of characters' stories in textbooks and the explanation of teaching reference books were taught were not only the efforts of textbook compilers to shape the national culture and national identity, but also notable examples of the process of modernization of education. It is worth noting that in the process of introducing the new foreign academic system, the introduction and transformation of one's own country language and related courses are faced with great difficulties. This reality not only contributed to the richness and diversity of language textbooks and teaching reference books in the late Qing and early Republican period, but also highlighted the non-negligible distance between planning and educational practice, from the formulation of the academic system to the preparation of teaching materials. Therefore, the development of elementary school language textbooks in the late Qing and early Republican period was not a one-way upward process. Part of it was only a product of a specific era, and some of the pitfalls have constrained the development of the elementary school language discipline in modern China. The beauty of the writing, the diversity of the content, and the emphasis on traditional culture presented in the Chinese textbooks of the late Qing and early Republic of China have triggered the phenomenon of the pursuit of Republic of China textbooks in society today. In this regard, a more rational attitude should be adopted. Although the late Qing and early Republican elementary school Chinese textbooks are noteworthy for their unique selection and organization, they should not be regarded simply as the ultimate standard of education. Based on the experience of writing elementary school Chinese textbooks in the late Qing and early Republican periods, it is an important issue for the future to consider the requirements of the times and to write textbooks with an innovative spirit and cultural confidence.
This thesis is a study on a particular design that appears on Chinese export porcelain produced in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The Chinese term bogu is often translated as ‘hundred antiques’ and names a design that depicts the scholarly avocation of appreciating and akdncherishing ancient bronze objects. The bogu design portrays bronze vessels such as the gu (觚), zun (尊), ding (鼎), ping (甁), jue (爵), and hu (壺) or other ancient objects as the central component supplemented by auspicious subjects such as scholar's accoutrements (文房淸玩) and the eight treasures (八寶) depending on the periodical changes in the design scheme. Thus, Chinese ceramics decorated with this design are termed bogu ceramics. In this thesis, bogu ceramics refer to the Chinese wares produced for European trade that are both a reflection and visual representation of this aspect of scholarly interest once prevalent in Ming and Qing society. An examination of the origin and circumstances surrounding the proliferation of the ‘hundred antiques’ design is the basis of this thesis which endeavors to diagnose the significance of bogu ceramics as a genre of Chinese export ware. The investigation into the conditions leading up to the visual representation of the bogu design starts with the Northern Song dynasty. In historical records, there are various lexical applications of the term bogu including gushi (古事, past affairs) and guxue (古學, ancient studies) among others. However, the use of this term in its relevance to design is strictly specific to ancient objects as is evident in the Northern Song text Xuanhe bogutu (Illustrated Catalogue of Antique Treasures from the Xuanhe Reign). Simultaneous to the publication of Xuanhe bogutu, the existence of a royal predilection for ancient objects combined with the predominance of Epigraphy-the study and interpretation of inscriptions on artifacts-resulted in the new vogue for bogu among the literary nobles. Its popularity persisted through the Song dynasty and was only amplified in the Ming dynasty. By the late Ming period, development of the commodity economy prompted the widespread dissemination of bogu from its scholarly niche to other corners of society including the merchant class. Thus in the Qing dynasty, the penchant for bogu became the social and economic foundation of all strata from the imperial class to the working commoners. The pervasiveness of the taste for bogu in the Ming and Qing dynasties is also a phenomenon further evidenced by the historical texts of the period. Within these social circumstances wherein bogu was considered the visual representation of the scholarly aesthetic, the origin of the design can be traced to the painting Picture of the New Year (歲朝圖), an example of the bogu huahui (博古花卉圖, bogu with flowers) genre. It is an amalgam of scholarly taste and auspicious significance expressed through the genre’s compulsory depiction of flowers in a vase and the enjoyment of scholars’ accoutrements. The same components are considered to be the origins of the bogu design as applied to ceramics, which would have developed in an identical manner to be used as decorative elements in not only ceramics but in various mediums such as painting, clothing and ornament, architecture, etc. The bogu design was widely appreciated by all social groups in the Qing dynasty but especially employed in diverse forms by the plebeian class until the nineteenth century. It follows that the bogu design is unique and specific in its dual connotation of the qualities ya (雅, elegant) and su (俗, custom). As evidenced by its growing status as the social and economic foundation of the Ming and Qing dynasties, the taste for bogu was also enjoyed by non-scholars. This is directly connected to the changes in the design of the bogu ceramics. For the purposes of determining the characteristics unique to the bogu ceramics of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the individual components of the design are first categorized as iconography representing ancient objects, munbang cheongwan (文房淸玩, well-equipped scholar’s study), or auspicious signs according to subject matter. Based on the combination of these elements and their overall composition, the bogu designs are then separated into four categories (I, II, III, IV). Through an examination of each group’s production period and style, it was possible to ascertain the characteristics of the bogu ceramics produced in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The bogu ceramics of the Ming and Qing dynasties were exported to, circulated within, and consumed in Europe through the ceramic trade of the Dutch and British East India Companies. The popularity of the bogu design in Europe can be examined from two perspectives. First, there is a definite affinity between the bogu design and European still life paintings in the elements depicted and the arrangement of these elements. It is an easy comparison of the parallels between the development of flower still life paintings or Pronkstilleven and the changes observed in the bogu design. Moreover, the bogu design and still life genre resemble one another in that each design carries symbolic meaning. Thus, one explanation for why the bogu design was able to appeal to a foreign aesthetic is the preexisting familiarity with the genre of still life painting in Europe. The second perspective builds on the concept of Chinoiserie. From this standpoint, the bogu design was a vehicle of inspiration for the European consumer who wished to express his or her appreciation for the Chinese tradition in the form of various decorative elements such as paintings, Coromandel, Lacquer paintings and other ornamental crafts. Chinese export porcelain of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, specifically the bogu ceramics of the Ming and Qing dynasties, exist in diverse styles. These include Blue and White porcelain, colored porcelain, wucai, fencai, etc. that are then subdivided into categories such as Kraak porcelain, transition period, Kangxi style, Powder Blue, Famille noire, Chinese Imari and Rococo. This systematic classification of stylistic characteristics revealed the periodical changes in the appearance of the design as seen in the bogu ceramics produced for European export. To briefly outline these changes, bogu ceramics exported to Europe in 1640-1680 were mainly Kraak and transition period style. In 1680-1730, the main exports were produced in more diverse styles than the former period. During 1730-1750, the bogu design was reproduced in the eighteenth century Rococo style of Europe. Overall, these transformations demonstrate how bogu ceramics were modified in form and style to meet the demands of their European consumers. At the other end of the spectrum, Chinese bogu ceramics exported to Europe also had an effect on the ceramic production of its destination. The European reproduction of bogu ceramics took form in two ways. The first is a faithful imitation that strived to emulate the exact shape, design, and style of the original. The second is a departure from the original as it incorporated elements of European taste. In the latter version of the bogu ceramics, some of the Chinese subjects are substituted with European objects or combined with European decoration. It was also common for Chinese images new to the European aesthetic to be projected onto the original bogu design which was inevitably an effect of Chinoiserie. For example, the transformation of Meissen porcelain through the influence of Chinoiserie in its depiction of East Asian figures in the design scheme reflects the new direction of the reinterpreted bogu design in European ceramics. Likewise, the similarities shared between bogu ceramics and European still life painting were enough to garner acceptance of the Chinese genre. However, the deciding factor was the influence of Chinoiserie which made the constituents of the bogu design familiar yet exotic, providing a template that could be modified to suit the aesthetic sensibilities of the European consumer. The bogu ceramics produced in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries of the Ming and Qing dynasties are representative examples of Chinese export porcelain that satisfied European taste and consumption. More importantly, it must be noted that the European version of bogu ceramics was not merely an imitation but rather a reinterpretation of a Chinese tradition in the aesthetic language of European taste. This indicates that the significance of bogu ceramics lies in its status as export porcelain for European trade rather than simply a genre of Chinese ceramics.
The topic of this paper is Research on the folk diffusion process and modern changes of Chinese pipa art in the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China. Through the analysis of premodern court records and modern literature and periodicals, it was carried out the study on the shape, performance, genre and application scope of the pipa. The results are summarized as follows: First, it was investigated the development of pipa music culture in Qing Dynasty. Based on the many literatures and paintings about court music and secular music in of the Qing Dynasty, it was found that the differences between the court pipa and the folk pipa are as follows. Two pipa shapes were used in the palace, the Qinglong music dance Pipa and the Annan national music Gaitan Pipa. The court pipa's playing posture changed to sitting, upright pipa, fingers instead of wood, to achieve a variety of expression techniques. On the other hand, the pipa used in folk music is more like the Annan national music Gaitan playing pipa. Professional pipa music compiled by the imperial court was hard to find, but various folk collections of pipa music appeared, mainly featuring solo music. The pipa is incorporated into many folk music. It can accompany Chines traditional opera, play instrumental ensemble and solo music. The development of these secular pipa promoted the emergence of the genre. That is to say, the pipa development of the center of gravity has shifted from the court to the folk, the beginning of the folk transformation. Secondly, it discusses the modernization of pipa in the period of the Republic of China. The results are as follows. The pipa culture inherited the characteristics of the folk pipa from the Qing Dynasty. Especially among the Southern and Northern school of pipa formed in the late Qing Dynasty, only the Southern school of pipa flourished in the Republic of China as another five schools: Wuxi School, Pinghu School, Pudong School, Chongming School and Wang School, while the northern school declined. Each school wrote its own musical score, such as Yiyishi Pipa Score, Yangzhengxuan Pipa Score, Yingzhou Ancient Tune, Wang Yuting Pipa Score, etc., which promoted the development of the school. During this period, under the influence of Western music, the improvement of the pipa began. In order to play twelve semitones equal temperament, the traditional tonal rage of pipa has been expanded, and the timbre of the pipa has been improved. With the influence of western composition, new Works of pipa appeared and concerning playing technique had emerged. In addition, with the reform of the education system, traditional folk artists have become full-time teachers in institutions of higher learning, such as the music Department of Shanghai Professional Normal School, the Music Training Institute attached to Peking University, and the Shanghai National Conservatory of Music. It made possible that the modern education of pipa started. All these laid the foundation for the development of pipa art. From the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, the development of the pipa played a decisive role in the trend of modern pipa art. It reveals that modern pipa art has experienced the transformation from court to folk and from folk to modern. Its significance lies in the macroscopic observation of the basic development vein of modern pipa art.
This study aims to reexamine marriage of pre-modern China beyond ‘modern marital consciousness.’ In other words, this study suggests new approach methods by avoiding simple description of the traditional marriage as 'marriage without autonomy' or 'union between two families' and by deeply investigating actual marriage in the perspective of pre-modern people. This will also be a part of the process to examine why marriage in pre-modern era performed in that manner, and what kind of historical process made traditional marriage perform in that way on a closer view. ‘The perspective of pre-modern people’ mentioned above consists of two standpoints. The perspective of pre-modern people mentioned above consists of two standpoints of two different groups of people: the local magistrates(or the state) and the people(or the society). While the standpoint of local community was reflected in local practice, the standpoint of government was reflected either in statute or in civil adjudication relating to marriage. The subjects were divided into two categories in this study so as to indicate that the perspective of marriage in pre-modern era was established not by the state nor by the society, but by the conflict and the compromise of the two subjects. To analyze the viewpoints of state and local community, this study focuses on the marriage law from the Tang-law(Tanglü), which legislated first legal regulation on marriage to Qing dynasty and case records involving marriage disputes. Ultimately, this study examines what kind of conditions were required to accomplish legal marriage, how the state and society proved the fact that the marriage was completed in appropriate way, and how these conditions had been changed through historical process. The marriage law of pre-modern China has existed since Tang dynasty. Once a marriage dispute emerged, an individual could litigate and have the effectiveness of marriage reaffirmed. If this kind of disputes reach a court, the most important evidences adopted by a judge were Pincai(聘財, bride price), Hunshu(婚書, marriage contract) and Siyue(私約). These three conditions were not mere local customs. Instead, They functioned as legal requirements from Tang to Qing dynasty to prove a marriage was established in adequate way. These conditions had been equally in effect until Ming dynasty. In Qing dynasty, on the other hand, only Hunshu out of three aforementioned conditions maintained its legal validity as an evidence of the marriage. As to Pincai, Pincai was accepted as a legal proof of the marriage only after specifying its amount of money and date of delivery on the Hunshu, which shows that Pincai’s legal validity in fact absorbed by Hunshu. On the other hand, The signification of Siyue was converted from ‘clarifying personal information of the parties concerned’ to ‘unjustified marriage which promised without a presence of matchmaker’, which means Siyue was excluded from the legal proof of the marriage along with Pinca. Furthermore, as local court in early Qing era established a new principle that they would not accept litigation involving marriage excepting Hunshu was submitted. Thus, Hunshu's authority as a legal validity had sharply reinforced, as the local court in early Qing era established a new principle that they would not handle the lawsuits that are not accompanied by Hunshu. In accordance with all these changes, the process of a marriage accomplishment gradually became similar to that of a common sales contract. To arrange a marriage, one necessarily wrote out Hunshu i.e. marriage contract. A marriage contract required involving party’s signs, exact amount of bride price, date of delivery and the whole process of marriage contract must have been supervised by a matchmaker. It was the day when the bride price specified on Hunshu delivered to wife’s family through matchmaker without any difference that the marriage contract came into force. The tendency of treating marriage as a plain contract can be observed through two growing phenomena. First, the form of Hunshu changed. Surely, Hunshu of middle and lower class differed from that of gentry/noblemen, which was filled with courteous sentences. During Ming and Qing dynasty, however, regardless of the class, Hunshu began to c show several significant preconditions such as personal information of the contracting parties, matchmaker’s name, presiding person(主婚人, Zhuhunren)’s name, the amount of bride price and specific date of delivery. Especially when it comes to widow’s remarriage, Hunshu saliently took a form of sales contract. Second, marriage law went through significant shift from Qianlong era to Daoguang era. At the time, series of regulations established to make it clarify that all legally engaged couple(that is, the couple who had already written out Hunshu but did not hold wedding ceremony or have a bridal night at the point of the case occurred) treated in the same way as t married couple. It was therefore a logical consequence of transition to treat marriage as a plain contract. If it had been natural to treat a marriage as a kind of contract, it should be also logical to assume that the contract began to have its legal effect at the point of signing a Hunshu. Traditional marriage in China required a certain period from engagement to actual marriage(成婚, Chenghun), and in the meantime, it was common to exchange various gift or a small quantity of money, as well as making marriage process more complex by making an oral pledge). If judges(local officials) had taken all of these acts as legal evidence of engagement, there would have been innumerable fake litigations and they must have gone through a lot of trouble managing those litigations. Hence, local officials considered Hunshu as exclusive proof of marriage and treated marriage as a contract, which made it far easier for officials to settle marital disputes. Whereas, the people could verify the credibility of marriage by adopting customary method of common civil contract―e.g. middle man, witness, and written contract. At worst, Even if they get involved in lawsuits, they could at least avoid most disadvantageous adjudication by submitting Hunshu to local court.
