Vol.15 No.2

When it comes to understand the religious phenomena, Durkheim’s concept of science is always controversial. If the application of scientific concepts to the religious phenomena remains a major debate to this day, it is necessary to closely examine Durkheim’s concept of science. Durkheim shows the origin and the fundamental characteristics of religion in the primitive forms of religious life(1912). For Durkheim, the essence of the religion is not to believe in a transcendent God. Religion is the social and the real. For him, common denominator of all the religion is divinity. This article wants to response to how the religious belief can be a the social(society), not be a transcendent God(religion). Durkheim’s proposition that the religious belief is the social can not be consisted of without scientism. Because the scientific thinking introduce in the process of substitution of the religious world to the real world. Durkheim’s scientific thinking that explains religious belief provides to the necessity of his research, as a social scientist who understood the important role of scientific knowledge. The primitive forms of religious life is a means to understand the concept of Durkheim’s science. This article will understand Durkheim’s religion et its essence that Durkheim explain in the primitive forms of religious life. We will see how Durkheim’s science explain the belief et also find out the reaction releaved by the others religious theorists. And so we will catch the scientific debate on his religion theory and his unique sociological status.
Vol.53 No.-
From the perspective of the present, which has experienced new social changes linked to post-industrialization, risk society, and neoliberalism, the traditional structural-functionalist interpretation of Durkheim arguably omits the historical context of its origins (the late 19th century) and overly narrows its academic significance. This paper, starting from this critical awareness, attempts to reinterpret Durkheim in a contemporary context. It begins by briefly summarizing the current trends in “rereading Durkheim,” followed by my attempt to reread Durkheim from a new-materialist perspective. The first part focuses on the issue of “individualism”, and the question of “relevance to reality”—a rereading of Durkheim within the context of both the 19th century and contemporary neoliberalism. The second part focuses on the relevance of Durkheim to the themes of new-materialism. It examines Durkheim’s attitude toward scientism and positivism, his statements on human-nonhuman relations, and attempts to reread Durkheim from a perspective of ‘affect’. Next, I turn to a diagnosis of modern society, characterized by a highly specialized division of labor, addressing the core concerns of this paper: the new social pathologies of modernity and the call for a transformation of social solidarity as a solution. Finally, I conclude with a summary in “Exit.”
Vol.- No.58
The purpose of this article is to describe and explain the reasons why so many modern sociologists have respected and developed Durkheim’s works as classics even though there have been various critiques against his sociology for over one century. The methodology of our research is the content analysis of the literature concerning Durkheimian studies collected by my research design. Because of a great many studies accumulated concerning Durkheim in this period, I set limits the period of our research from 2000 to 2020 and check various books published in this period. But still there are many books studied and published by sociologists of various schools, I strategically planned our work in three stages. Firstly, I have chosen three books celebrating the birth and the death of our founder of discipline. They are Emile Durkheim as a founder of modern sociology(2008), Durkheim whom we usually talk about is really Durkheimian? by his own standards?(2011), Emile Durkheim reevaluated by the view of sociologists of late modern society(2018). We reviewed these three books by focusing on key concepts as solidarity, cultural sociology, typology of social relations. And then we have explored the some new areas of sociology such as economic sociology, political sociology inherited from the Durkheimian sociological tradition. Secondly, among various articles edited by three books mentioned above, we have chosen only two important articles of Raymond Boudon to clarify his theoretical positions vis à vis cultural sociology of Jeffrey Alexander and the other dominant positions in interpreting The Elementary forms of religious life. Finally we have explored the Raymond Boudon’s sociological theory-theory of ordinary rationality- from the view of 21st contemporary sociology with special emphasis on the ways of synthesizing the various classical sociologists such as Tocqueville, Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, and Adam Smith. In this research, we specially paid attention to his innovative and original way of interpreting the Durkheimian sociology on the basis of his overall synthesis of the various classical sociologies. And then we have observed him to elaborate his own theory of ordinary rationality as a master scholar of this domain. As a result of our research, we have confirmed that Durkheim and Boudon are sharing the same spirit of vocation of sociology and professionalism in seeking their own ways of sociology for the new academic frontier areas. This spirit consists in elaboration of new theoretical problematics in tune with their times, necessary for resolving the problems of ideological conflicts and for establishing righteous value system for the contemporary society. In this research we have confirmed the reasons why Boudon and Durkheim could become master scholars in their times in their own way. It’s because of their spirit for pioneering the new social scientific problematics to resolve the problems of their times. I finally reconfirm the scholar spirit and professionalism in their adventurous and persevering works for creating new theoretical problematics against various challenges ahead of their vocation. Personally, I think that our research will provide new theoretical alternative for Korean society and the community of Korean sociologists who are wandering facing the crisis without any solid theoretical and methodological foundations. I hope that this kind of theoretical research will help us to overcome the deep-seated ideological conflicts of our society and to establish the righteous value system, adequate and necessary for realizing the new future just order. The new sociological paradigm of the 21st century we have discovered will guide us to the new way of thought in interpreting classical sociological tradition for developing boldly original ways of thoughts in tune with the task of our times. This will help us to find a integrated human & social sciences on the basis of a new rational and scientific foundation.

The purpose of this paper is to attempt a role do emotional factor play in Durkheim's theory of crime. This paper would briefly highlighted Durkheim’s view that crime is a ‘Normal’ part of any human society, before going on to discuss the role of the emotional factors in his theory. In addition to fear, anger, and other basic human emotions, the feeling of belonging on social solidarity would also be interpreted as an ‘Emotional Factor’ for the purposes of this paper. The first part was Durkheim’s theory of crime and Merton’s view on anomie, here Durkheim defined crime or view it as normal rather than pathological phenomenon. The second part was role of emotional factor in society and also social solidarity which Durkheim used to demonstrate the role of emotional factor in society and these two social solidarity, Mechanical and Organic Solidarity. In conclusion part, it could be argued that Durkheim believe that a normal crime is a crime that was not excessive and the role emotional factor play in a society is to generate and maintain a society, also the division of labour in society of the forms of solidarity. According to Durkheim in his emotion, that which holds a society together, the glue of solidarity is emotion.
Vol.- No.67
This article examines Émile Durkheim’s understanding of human nature to reinterpret the assumptions underlying theories of deviance and crime. It attempts to organize some of the most controversial assumptions of criminological theory based on Durkheim’s understanding of human nature. Durkheim recognized hereditary individual differences in nature, but he saw these differences as very limited variations in the general dispositions of human nature. For Durkheim, human nature has dual, contradictory, yet mutually essential and complementary qualities. He recognized that human nature is composed of an individual and a social part. The individual nature is what we, as a species, are naturally born with. Social nature is understood as having a dual nature. The embryo of social nature is naturally given and is expressed under the influence of society, and human nature in its fullest sense is realized. Durkheim believed that within our nature lies the crucial element that enables the formation of a social nature. The biologically given part of our nature also has a social part. And the social part has a nature that goes beyond the biological part and is clearly distinct from the individual part. The social part of human nature, in Durkheim’s view, is a natural part of human nature because human desires are endless in nature and at the same time naturally accept social restrictions on them. Egoism and altruism are also deeply embedded in human psychology, just in different directions. These two types of emotions express two different but inseparable aspects of human nature. Durkheim’s explanation of human nature may not be the correct one. However, it serves as a valuable reference for analyzing and further developing criminological theories. By challenging the simplistic assumptions about human nature in criminological theories, it offers a more nuanced foundation for theoretical advancement.
Vol.15 No.4
It is necessary to actively derive the meaning of Durkheim's socialization concept in the present neoliberal age by revising and supplementing the socialization theory of Durkheim. In this study, I examined the socialization theory presented in 『Education and Sociology』, in the light of his other works and discussed how to be corrected or supplemented. From this point of view, I tried to critically analyze how Durkheim's socialization is interpreted and accepted in educational terms. Based on the results of this study, I presented the key elements for school socialization in the neoliberal era and suggested the task of school socialization. First, it is necessary to revise the understanding of negative humanity in Durkheim's socialization debate. School socialization should be based on a moral individualism that emphasizes the dignity of individuals. Second, the meaning of 'society' should be clearly conceptualized in Durkheim's socialization. School socialization should contribute to the formation of a cooperative and moral community, not a reproduction of a marketed society. Third, the human subject 's activeness and autonomous will should be constructed in accordance with the social solidarity form. School socialization should promote student human rights, which means respect for individualization from collective consciousness for mechanical solidarity. Fourth, socialization for organic solidarity should be distinguished from socialization for forming selfish and utilitarian human being of neoliberal society. School socialization should be positioned as resistance socialization against neoliberal socialization.
Vol.- No.87
This study reviews Durkheim's sociology of law and science of morality, which emphasizes the morality of law, from the perspective of ethical naturalism, shedding new light on their theoretical implications for human rights. Specifically, this paper undertakes the following detailed tasks: First, by examining Aristotle's theory of happiness, which has influenced Durkheim’s thought, it reveals that Durkheim's science of morality is a revised version of neo-Aristotelian ethics. Secondly, by reviewing Quid Secundatus Politicae Scientiae Instituendae Contulerit (Durkheim, 1892), this study examines Durkheim’s science methodology as it applies to law and social science. Third, it discusses how Durkheim’s science of morality, based on the ideals of human dignity and the historical progress of moral individualism, can be effectively integrated into interdisciplinary approaches of human rights, transcending the intellectual division between law and social science.
Vol.0 No.47
Theory of crime and punishment is the mainstay of Emile Durkheim’s sociology of law. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that his theory of punishment has much in common with the theory of puishment as ‘positive general prevention’, recently advocated in Germany by Gunter Jakobs, Winfried Hassemer and many others, and rapidly gathering supporters here in Korea as well. There seems to be no excessiveness in saying that Durkheim was a precursor of the recent theory of positive general prevention. Durkheim conceives of punishment as a reaction of society to express and communicate social morality (conscience collective) to the general public as well as to the criminal. In a word, punishment is a social disapproval or blame, of which pain is not an essential element. This conception of punishment as a social disapproval is the key feature of the theory of positive general prevention, in which Jakobs’ theory differs quite a bit from that of Hassemer. While Jakobs puts stress on the protection of society, Hassemer’s theory has its distinctive feature in the humanitarian relationship with the crime. Among these divergent opionions, Durkheim’s theory, at least his theory on the punishment in modern society, seems to have much more in common with Hassemer’s. Collective consciousness in modern society, according to Durkheim, is a product of long-term development of morality evolving from the religious to the individual. By this individualism, or “cult of the individual”, harsh punishment has been repealed, prison has become almost the only kind of punishment, and corporal punishment in school, he says, should be entirely prohibited. Durkheim’s sociological thoery of law and punishment has abundant stimulating suggestions and lessons, which hopefully can contribute to the communication between sociology and legal science.

In this article I argue that Durkheim`s commitment to sociology is entwined with his intellectual struggle for the moral integration of Third Republic France. By looking back on my encounters with Durkheim`s sociology, through my intellectual connection to Bellah and later through meeting young Korean scholars of Durkheim during my teaching career, I show that Durkheim`s sociology has continued to be a distinctive part of sociological discourse in Korea. Turning to the formation of Durkheim`s own sociology to sketch how he came to focus on his lifelong struggle with morality by pointing out that what he meant by `social` is `moral` in a fundamental sense and that he rejected rational-individualistic epistemology. I note that he began producing major works only a few years after his sojourn in Germany where he had met its social science which tended to assert holistic strains. I move on to discuss the way that his sociology of morality led him to come out for the defense of Dreyfus, stressing that his sociology demanded simultaneously an academic commitment and intellectual obligation. Durkheim`s sociology was a unique attempt to bridge two worlds of scholarship and engagement with moral issues that have been long regarded as irreconcilable, and to formulate a new type of intellectual. In commemorating the sesquicentennial of the birth of Durkheim, I conclude this article with some reflections on Korean sociology and its intellectual landscape today.
