This thesis is a study that sets up anthropocene referring to the escalating global crisis as a catastrophe, and then demonstrates it with artworks. The current situation in which the global system is influenced by human activities working as a geological power, instead of the laws of nature, is called anthropocene by scholars. Even though the official name of geological period is holocene up to date, it would be necessary to newly define the current phenomenon in which the enormous ecosystem of nature is threatened by mankind. Anthropocene that was initially brought up by biologist Eugene F. Stoermer, started grabbing public attention by Paul Crutzen in 2,000. Anthropocene derived by Crutzen has broaden its territory even to the fields like literature, science, philosophy, sociology, and arts. This thesis not only handles the concept and discourse of anthropocene, but also examines the grounds for anthropocene is treated as a synonym of catastrophe through artworks by connecting anthropocene and arts. In this thesis, the catastrophe is not simply a lexical meaning, but a concept reflecting the viewpoint of catastrophe in Walter Benjamin’s 『On the Concept of History』. By putting Benjamin’s theory of 『On the Concept of History』 regarding the advance as a catastrophe because every history is recorded by winners instead of losers, into anthropocene, the anthropocene stained with ‘loser=earth(nature), winner=human’ is viewed as a catastrophe. Benjamin defines the life in which the state of emergency becomes a usual practice as a catastrophe. Based on this, the artwork cases demonstrating that anthropocene is a catastrophe are classified and analyzed into three types. First, ‘the environmental pollution and global warming caused by fossil fuel’ sends a warning message by directly/indirectly showing the glacial extinction regarded as the touchstone of climate crisis, through works. Second, ‘the chemical pollution and space junk by radioactive waste’ arouses the frightening future of earth through the looks of deformed creatures born from chemicals released by human, lithium, petroleum, and nickel minerals that stain the Mother Nature with chemical pollution, and electronic waste that flies in the earth and even space. Third, ‘the plastic & marine waste’ presents a definite answer to the question ‘Who is the destroyer of the earth’ by visibly revealing the huge amount of marine litter floating about ocean and the figure of plastic waste released by human. The works above have one thing in common with each other like they are all results caused by human activities, and the earth covered with the traces of mankind is not a beautiful green planet any more, but showing the shape of apocalypse. However, this thesis presents not only the gloomy reality of earth, but also the alternative measures for anthropocene through art. Tomás Saraceno who realized the sustainability of global system through artworks is the one this thesis aims to talk about. Saraceno who produces artworks based on the perspective of new materialism rising as a core theory that views anthropocene including Bruno Latour, realizes the positive prospect of earth through the combination of arts and science. Saraceno who regards the symbiosis of human and non-human that the new materialism aims for as a solution that can promise the tomorrow of earth, emphasizes the interdependence between nature and human in his works. According to Saraceno’s intention to exclude human’s intervention as much as possible in his works, his works use only natural energy like solar heat and wind as power without using any fossil fuel. Saraceno’s works like this could work as a chance to discover the possibility in which anthropocene identified with catastrophe can be used as a synonym of hope. The contemporary earth is facing a new geological period called anthropocene. Human is the only species that smiles on the earth stained with the climate catastrophe and destroyed ecosystem. However, this thesis implies the emergency of earth and the future of mankind without smiles through artworks of anthropocene specifying the catastrophe of anthropocene. This thesis that attempts to change the abstract concept of ‘catastrophe’ into visual materials like ‘artworks’ is significant in the aspect of not only arousing direct anxiety and fear about our near future in the anthropocene era, but also establishing the coping measures of arts. Keywords: Anthropocene, Walter Benjamin, Catastrophe, Earth, Nature, Tomás Saraceno, Climate Crisis, New Materialism
This study attempted to analyze the aspect of the Anthropocene in Jo Ha-hyung's novels Chimera's Morning and Assembled Bodhi Tree as the concept of ‘assemblage(불: agencement)’ Amid the increasing weight and urgency of the global environmental problem represented by the Anthropocene, Jo Ha-hyung's novel is noteworthy in that it expresses the Anthropocene with dystopian imagination and unique style and raises awareness of the problem. He expresses Anthropocene in literature by shocking existing literary customs, including subject and formal dimensions. He imagined the world of dystopia in which it deepened by critically diagnosing the problems that the present era poses, and based on that imagination, he revealed the unique catastrophic theme consciousness that the Anthropocene recognizes. In expressing this, a unique narrative form that deviates from human-centered causal logic and human-centered style was introduced, and a characteristic narrative act that breaks existing novel customs was attempted. This can be said to be a remarkable achievement among Korean literary works that appeared in the early 2000s. However, Jo Ha-hyung's novel is having a lot of difficulty reading due to its complex and multi-layered style, composition, and difficult subject consciousness. Therefore, the text proposes to read it as a kind of assemblage as a methodological approach to properly appreciate and diagnose Jo Ha-hyung's novel. Assemblage is a concept devised by Gilles Deleuze & Félix Guattari and developed by Manuel DeLanda, a kind of ontological construction principle that various elements of the world are intertwined and have various possibilities. If you read Jo Ha-hyung's novel asemblage, you can read the work in two aspects. First, it is possible to examine what is a compositional and stylistic narrative act, that is, a collection of narrative acts, in which the artist is building the work as a collection. Here, the hypertextual arrangement of Chimera's Morning and the circular narrative arrangement of Assembled Bodhi Tree are attempts to break the grammar of existing novels rooted in the spirit of modernity in line with the theme consciousness of the Anthropocene. If the hypertext narrative of Chimera's Morning illuminates the network of actants in the world, the circular narrative of Assembled Bodhi Tree questions the view of time itself based on causality and demands expansion. At the stylistic level, if Chimera's Morning breaks down the boundaries between individuals and the environment and pays attention to their relationship, Assembled Bodhi Tree presents a basis for empathy in terms of pain in the world's existence. The narrative acts of the two works mentioned above are closely connected to each other and build an assemblage of literature. Second, it is possible to examine how the components in the work are closely related to express the theme of the Anthropocene, that is, the collection of Anthropocene expressions. Each work features unique actants that exist along the world's complex network, and their aspects and operational dynamics express the assemblage of the world that works closely with each other. Various actants based on the biological motifs appearing in Chimera's Morning express biological relationships and ecology accompanying the world. Accordingly, what stands out in the work is the ecological net and non-human-centered thinking that exist between individuals and the environment. The Buddhist ideas and motifs of Assembled Bodhi Tree express the world of Buddhism's acting, which implies the world of assembly. There, the pattern of transcendental disasters that exist beyond human cognition and the corresponding collective movement of microscopic beings appear, revealing the world's relationship network. Jo Ha-hyung's two novels express the collective world that forms the Anthropocene today, criticize the modernity that encouraged the Anthropocene, and dismantle the modern novel grammar established from that point of view. His novel proposes a relationship-oriented thinking that makes him reflect on the human-centered modernity that has made up the modern era, and evokes a sense of the Anthropocene problem from the perspective of disaster. It also attempts to reform its own grammar to effectively express this subject consciousness. This study is the essence of the characteristics and implications of his novel. Through this paper, we hope to reconsider the literary significance of Jo Ha-hyung's novels amid the deepening climate and ecological crisis in the human world today.
This dissertation reassesses the art installations, projects, educational initiatives, and the food experiments and daily practices of Olafur Eliasson (b. 1967) over the past two decades, through a Post-Anthropocene perspective to explore strategies for ameliorating global environmental conditions. The entrenched dichotomy that separates humanity from nature and pervasive anthropocentrism have precipitated the Anthropocene—a period characterized by significant anthropogenic alterations to Earth's systems. The Post-Anthropocene, emerging as a reflective critique of the Post-Anthropocene, seeks to identify progressive solutions that overcome the anthropocentric paradigm responsible for ecological crises. This discourse on the Post-Anthropocene focus on the interconnected environment of humans and non-humans, fostering strategies for their collaborative coexistence. It advocates for systemic and behavioral modifications that account for human impacts on the environment, recalibrates the hierarchical relationship between humans and non-humans, and promotes the establishment of a non-hierachical system that facilitates their mutual cooperation. Additionally, it endorses a systemic thinking to understanding complex interrelations within ecosystems and encourages interdisciplinary approach and collaboration to explore diverse cohabitation strategies, thereby proposing a multilateral alternatives to Anthropocene-related challenges. Artistic endeavors that engage with themes of the Anthropocene and environmental degradation have been instrumental in raising awareness about the severity of ecosystem destruction and interrogating the relationship between existence of humans and nature. However, these efforts often lack concrete proposals for fostering sustainable environments. This research examines Olafur Eliasson's artistic endeavors within the context of Post-Anthropocene goals, highlighting his pursuit of innovative solutions capable of addressing the ecological challenges of the Anthropocene on a long-term basis. The discussion begins with an exploration of how Olafur Eliasson and his studio have sought to shift public consciousness and thought processes through art and education, aiming to guide the global ecosystem towards equilibrium. Studio Olafur Eliasson has become a hub for interdisciplinary exchange, encouraging collaboration among experts in science, architecture, and design to produce experimental art and knowledge that respond to environmental changes. Developed through collaboration with diverse individuals, Your mobile expectations: BMW H2R project (2007) fosters holistic understanding that links various objects—including automobiles—to their broader environmental and social contexts. Eliasson also established the Institute for Spatial Experiments within his studio to explore interdisciplinary education, which promotes the development of consilient thinking to address intricate environmental and social issues. Furthermore, Eliasson’s initiatives extend into the domains of art and daily life, where he devises and implements sustainable alternatives that influence both individual actions and institutional policies. The SOE Kitchen (Studio Olafur Eliasson Kitchen), developed in collaboration with his studio's kitchen team, has pursued numerous food experiments and research aimed at transforming culture of food production and consumption into environmentally sustainable practices. This initiative has significantly altered public perceptions regarding food and its consumption. Additionally, Eliasson has introduced various strategies to reduce carbon emissions in art production, transportation, and exhibition practices, actively reducing the carbon footprint of his studio operations and catalyzing substantive changes in behavior among individuals and art institutions alike. Recent projects by Olafur Eliasson, particularly post-2020, delve into mechanisms and environments for fostering creative systems where humans, non-humans, and future generations can participate and collaborate, thereby facilitating social and environmental changes. The discussion highlights projects such as Earth Speakr (2020), an online platform that enables future generations, who are politically voiceless, to suggest insight into the Earth's environment and ensures that adults listen; Future Assembly (2021), which acknowledges non-humans as members of society and enhance the rights of nature, a forum is established where various entities, including non-humans, can have a voice; and Life (2021), which presents a model landscape where humans, animals, plants, nature, and technology interact and coexist. These projects emphasize the proposal of various coexistent ways of life that allow humans, non-humans, and future generations to form non-hierarchical relationships. Through this analysis, this thesis illuminates how Eliasson’s artistic practices are pivotal in shifting anthropocentric perspectives, exploring sustainable cohabitation strategies between humans and non-humans, and advocating for a balanced ecosystem through systematic changes in societal behaviors and thought processes.
(The) anthropocene, climate change, and time : Labyrinths of climate change fiction
Jung, Narie Sungkyunkwan University 2023
The Anthropocene defines our era. It is hard to pass a day without hearing about it and especially its own defining feature—climate change. For the past ten years or so, there has been a substantial increase in Anthropocene and climate change narratives, particularly in climate change fiction (cli-fi), and this alone shows that climate change has become part of our reality. The implication of this is that all of humanity, with no exception, is subject to unprecedentedly enormous and complicated climate issues. Climate issues are, like Timothy Morton’s “hyperobjects,” elusive and global matters. For this reason, it is crucial to include as great a diversity of voices as possible when we deal with the Anthropocene and its climate issues and to consider various thematic issues about them. My dissertation includes an international selection of voices (American, British, and Korean authors) and investigates diverse signs of the Anthropocene: humanity’s profound preoccupation with the present, the prevalence of inordinate individualism in unsustainable consumer culture, the increasing acknowledgment of the significance of symbiotic relationships among humans and nonhumans, and the complications of genetic compulsions. The Anthropocene, climate change, and their implications and complications are not simply about understanding human impacts on environment, environmental degradation, or extreme weather that is hostile to or unfavorable for humanity; rather, they are fundamentally about understanding our ways of being and thinking. This means that cli-fi contributes to a fuller understanding about ourselves. In other words, cli-fi allows us to explore our relationships to ourselves, our relationships to others, and our relationships to nonhumans. This is a valuable potential of cli-fi that will raise an environmental consciousness, a consciousness that can potentially lead us to address and combat climate change challenges.
This study attempts to synthesizes what Clive Hamilton has termed the antinomy of Anthropocene and, through this, to explore the possibilities of ecocinema in the contemporary climate crisis. As the climate crisis worsens, humans are no longer able to relate to nature in the way that modernity presupposes. This situation has fundamentally alienated humans from nature, and as a result, there is an intense debate today to redefine the relationship between humans and nature. In this context, this study examines the antinomy of the relationship between humans and nonhumans and attempts to shed light on the possibility of ecocinema to resolve this situation. To this end, this study focuses on three things. First, it argues that nature can only be considered as an impossibility, not as a specific object. All attempts to capture nature in any way boil down to its fundamental impossibility. Anthropocentrism and nonanthropocentrism each devise ecological practices that can address the climate crisis through different conceptualisations of nature, but what they face is not the disappearance of the ‘scale effects’ provided by the Anthropocene, but the fundamental impossibility of eliminating ‘scale effects’. In order to advance this discussion, this study examines ecocriticism as a large stream of ecological practice in the literature. The aim of this study is to examine the concepts of nature that have been presupposed by ecocriticism and, in turn, to identify the limitations that these practices have encountered. As a result, it is argued that the reconceptualisations of nature in ecocriticism have all been driven by the limitations of their presupposed conceptions, and that the only way to think about nature is now to consider its impossibility as nature itself. Secondly, it is argued that the only way to deal with todays situation, given the impossibility of nature, is to rethink human subjectivity. If all attempts to identify what nature is have been reduced to impossibility, the question that remains is why we attempt to identify what nature is. In other words, rather than endeavouring to capture the exceptions to the concept of nature that have been dislocated in modernity, we should be concerned with the rules that constitute the concept of nature in the first place. In order to make this point, this study will take a critical look at the two camps of the debate that have framed the antinomy of Anthropocene. It examines the ecomodernist argument, represented by anthropocentrism, and the newmaterialist and object oriented ontologist, represented by nonanthropocentrism, and diagnoses their limitations along with their logic. This study demonstrates that ecomodernist accounts are limited in that they still prolong the subjectivity of modernity, while newmaterialist and object-oriented ontologist are limited in that they neglect historical processes by excluding subjectivity. Having pointed out the limitations of both, this study proposes a different view of subjectivity based on Deleuzes institutional theory. Human subjectivity is that which constitutes a distinct society despite its entanglement with matter(or nature), which for Deleuze is defined precisely in terms of invention and belief. In this context, this study proposes the fundamental dimensions of the constitution of society in its encounter with nature, namely invention and belief, as the subjectivity called for in the Anthropocene. Finally, it is argued that if cinema has an impact at the ecological level, it is because it is able to restore the relationship between humans and nature that has been severed. To this end, this study attempts to make a link between Deleuzes philosophy of cinema and institutional theory. What the Anthropocene has brought about is fundamentally a disconnection between human and the world and, by extension, between human and nature. Human has been thoroughly alienated from nature. What is being asked of us in this situation is neither the abolition of subjectivity nor the survival of modernity. This study argues that what is being asked of us is to escape from our idealized image of nature and encounter the nature with which we are entangled. This encounter is always an experience of fundamental unthinkability, but this experience of unthinkability is what makes us realize the human subjectivity that, along with invention and belief, has constructed nature with inner satisfaction. This study argues that cinema has the potential to restore the disconnection between humans and nature by offering us precisely this impossibility(unthinkability) with nature. This study attempts to redefine ecocinema in this context. To do so, it examines the context of ecocinema. It argues that the process undertaken by ecocinema, from a critique of cinema that operates in ways that reinforce the dichotomy between nature and culture, to a search for cinema's capacity for ecological possibility, ultimately confronts the limitations faced by previous ecocriticism and methodologies. In this situation, it is argued through Deleuze's philosophy of cinema that what cinema was doing was to invent various images of nature and to represent them by believing in them. The attempt to redefine ecocinema in this study is not to frame cinema in terms of ecological concepts, but to demonstrate that cinema itself has always had ecological implications.
This study aims to develop a secondary art curriculum for "Ecological Transition Education" by examining contemporary art from the perspective of the Anthropocene. It conducts a detailed analysis of exhibitions, artwor ks, and art education programs related to this theme. The Anthropocene exhibitions and art education programs held at the National Asian Culture Center (ACC) from 2022 to 2023 serve as significant guidelines for this r esearch. Through this study, the author aims to enable secondary school students to confront issues related to climate, ecology, and the planet Ear th, and to attempt ecological awareness changes through art. The Anthropocene discourse views the opening of a new geological epo ch, following the end of the Holocene, as a result of changes in the Earth 's environment due to human activities. The 21st-century advancements i n science, technology, and economic industries have largely been anthrop ocentric, leading to unforeseen climate change and global warming, which have posed detrimental consequences to humanity. Despite becoming dese nsitized to these issues, safeguarding the ecology has become a paramou nt task for humanity as one of the inhabitants of the Earth. Ecological tra nsition education is imperative for individuals living in the Anthropocene e ra, essential for human survival. Ecological transition education aims to address climate change and crise s, promoting coexistence between humans and the Earth while advocating for sustainable living. Particularly, receiving such education is crucial for nurturing ecological awareness among students, who are the future stewa rds of our planet. Among various educational approaches, art education h olds significant importance as it encourages individuals to reflect on their relationship with nature, share contemporary crises through artworks, and foster empathy with others. Contemporary art that represents the crises a nd conditions of the Anthropocene era has the potential to be explored as a timely and poignant means of ecological transition education through art. In this paper, we examine the works of contemporary artists Maarten V anden Eynde(1977~ ) and Olafur Eliasson(1967~ ), as well as the exhibiti ons at the National Asian Culture Center(ACC) titled《Aqua Paradiso》(20 22), 《Bandi Walk: One Step closer to Our Earth》(2022), and《The view of Hanui》(2023) from the perspective of the Anthropocene. We analyze whether these artworks and exhibitions can be integrated into ecological t ransition education. Additionally, we systematically analyze ecological tran sition education in the revised 2022 curriculum and the 2015 revised mid dle school art textbooks. Based on these analyses, we develop a five-ses sion instructional plan for art appreciation, expression, and experiential ac tivities in contemporary art for ecological transition education. The importance of this study lies in the following aspects. Firstly, there i s a need for the systematic development of art education curriculum for ecological transition education. The 2022 revised curriculum incorporates ecological transition education content into all subjects, emphasizing the o ngoing qualitative research on middle school art education curriculum as a n art subject that showcases the zeitgeist. Secondly, there is a necessity for activating timely ecological transition education within middle school a rt education classes. This will enhance students' abilities to respond to th e rapidly changing situation as climate and ecosystem crises worsen. Thir dly, through empathizing with ecology and one's own life, the process of transitioning from anthropocentric to ecocentric thinking will enable a dee per understanding of current ecological issues. Consequently, students can grow into individuals who embody the values of climate crisis response, s ustainable development, and ecological transition as advocated in the 202 2 revised curriculum. If ecological transition education becomes active in the field of art education, it is expected to foster ecocentric thinking whil e coexisting with the Earth and humanity. 이에 본 논문에서는 동시대 미술 작가 마텐 반덴 아인드(Maarten Vanden Ey nde, 1977~ ), 올라퍼 엘리아슨(Olafur Eliasson, 1967~ )의 작품과 국립아시 아문화전당의 ACC FOCUS《아쿠아 천국 Aqua Paradiso》(2022), ACC 미디어 파사드《반디산책: 지구와 화해하는 발걸음 Bandi Walk: One Step closer to O ur Earth》(2022), ACC 야외전시《하늬풍경 The view of Hanui》(2023)전시 를 인류세 관점에서 살펴보고, 이를 생태전환교육에 연계하여 분석한다.
Here Comes the Sun!: Toward a Critical Ecological Rhetoric for the Anthropocene
Rife, Tyler S ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Arizona State Univ 2021 해외박사(DDOD)
The geologic epoch of the Anthropocene, or the age of human domination, is a metacondition animated by unprecedented planetary change. Global warming, regular mass extinction events, and ecological disaster wrought from human activity spell crisis for all planetary life while exacerbating dominative relations among the human species. Thus, the Anthropocene may be viewed as an age wherein spheres of precarity widen and (in)direct impacts of ecological disaster differentially harm populations predicated upon their predetermined social location under dominative governmental, economic, and social structures. This metacondition poses a challenge for activists, critical scholars, and critical pedagogues working toward social emancipation. To interpret and combat the complex and scalar logics of power in the Anthropocene, this critical/cultural, rhetoric, and performance project advances a turn toward what I term critical ecological rhetoric. Drawing inspiration from Felix Guattari’s The Three Ecologies and Raymie McKerrow’s critical rhetoric – two modes of theorizing which sought to articulate dominative relations under the metacondition of neoliberal hegemony –this critical ecosophical turn seeks to address power as dispersed across material, social, and psychological registers and as complexly entangled within the metacondition of the Anthropocene. An integral element of critical ecological rhetorical practice is demystifying the presence, construction, and defense of borders imposed within and between ecological registers, as such bordered constructs of difference serve to justify violent domination while concealing ecological logics of interconnectedness.Across three case studies which differently privilege one of three ecological registers, I demonstrate the dynamism of critical ecological rhetoric. In “Pyropolitical Phoenix,” materialist, elemental implications of governmentality in the urban ecology of Phoenix, Arizona are examined as a rhetorical circulation synecdochic of repressive relationships in urban ecologies under worsening conditions of climate change. In “I’m Real When I Shop My Face,” the circulation of glitch feminism by pop artist Sophie across digital media ecologies is examined to demonstrate capacities for queer worldmaking within cisnormative algorithmic architectures. In “All My Happiness Is Gone,” I examine my ecology of depression as enmeshed in complex genetic, social, and material entanglement.
Mortal Foresight: Learning to Live Through Extinction
Varrato, Rory Columbia University ProQuest Dissertations & These 2025 해외박사(DDOD)
This dissertation presents a response to the paradoxical question confronting Homo sapiens in the early Anthropocene: how can we learn to live through extinction? To answer that question, I establish a psychoanalytic frame within which to consider the implications of the Anthropocene for our species' survival. From that perspective, I argue that the Anthropocene, conceived of as a function of human population overshoot, must become the central focus of education today. By this, I mean that the difficult affective-cognitive task of working through the empirical reality of the Anthropocene as an extinction-level threat to all life on Earth ought to be recognized as a most urgent form of transformative existential education. I provide a phenomenological example of what this kind of learning looks like through an autoethnographic recounting of my own experience grappling with the Anthropocene, which led me to co-found the New York City chapter of Extinction Rebellion, the global decentralized nonviolent movement for climate and ecological justice. Then, I bring that experience back in from the streets to formulate a developmental therapeutic ecopedagogy first for psychic breakdown through ecological mortification and, subsequently, for what I call mortal foresight, or the capacity to robustly imagine and wholly accept the possibility of near-term human extinction in the Anthropocene. Since this capacity rests in significant part on affective knowledge, I also offer a learning theory for aesthetic education through narrative art that is additionally meant to test the reader's own emotional learning. Ultimately, I conclude that the systematic educational cultivation of existential transformation to a postapocalyptic identity can serve the adaptive function of swerving our species away from the precipice of extinction.

The purpose of this study is to examine how Caryl Churchill’s Far Away reimagines the tragic form in light of ecological crisis, posthuman theory, and the socio-political realities of the Anthropocene. Drawing on Timothy Morton’s concept of “dark ecology” and Jason W. Moore’s critique of the Anthropocene, this thesis argues that Far Away dismantles classical structures of tragedy and inaugurates a new form: the posthuman tragedy. Through this lens, Churchill’s play becomes a theatrical intervention that challenges classical and modern structures of tragedy by confronting the audience with the ethical, aesthetic, and ontological implications of living in the Capitalocene. In contrast to traditional tragedy, which relies on the individual’s moral transformation and the restoration of social order through catharsis, Far Away subverts these conventions by presenting a fragmented world in which human and nonhuman agencies are radically entangled. The play’s rejection of narrative closure, its surreal and dystopian imagery, and its disruption of logos-based language together signal a profound reconfiguration of the tragic genre. In the introduction and second chapter, this study situates Far Away within the broader context of ecological crisis and the evolving tragic tradition, arguing that conventional forms of tragedy are no longer adequate for representing the slow, systemic violence of the Anthropocene/Capitalocene. The second chapter first explores cultural and philosophical responses to the apocalyptic condition of the 21st century, noting how thinkers like Slavoj Žižek and Bruno Latour describe our era as one in which catastrophe is always-already occurring. It then examines the term “Anthropocene” and its critique by scholars like Jason W. Moore, who proposes the “Capitalocene” to expose the capitalist structures underpinning ecological collapse. Against this backdrop, the chapter traces the historical function of tragedy—from Aristotle to modern critiques such as Peter Szondi and Raymond Williams—and concludes that tragedy must evolve to address the entangled, nonhuman dimensions of ecological disaster. This sets the stage for reimagining tragedy through a posthuman, ecocritical lens. In the third chapter, the focus shifts to Churchill’s dramaturgical strategies in Far Away and their disruption of traditional tragic structure. Analyzing Parts One and Two of the play, the chapter examines how Churchill dismantles the logic of logos and undermines the moral authority that traditionally grounds tragedy. Through fragmented dialogue, surreal settings, and symbolic objects like the prisoners’ hats, Churchill exposes the violent complicity of capitalogenic art. Drawing from Morton’s concepts of agrilogistics and “strange loops,” the chapter argues that Churchill reveals the tragic failures of both human subjectivity and artistic representation in the Capitalocene. In the fourth chapter, this study turns to the final Part of Far Away and proposes the concept of “posthuman tragedy.” Here, the play’s apocalyptic vision reaches its peak: all entities—humans, animals, and materials—are drawn into a surreal global war. The chapter analyzes how this collapse of ontological boundaries evokes what Morton calls “ecognosis,” a visceral recognition of human-nonhuman entanglement. By rejecting catharsis, reconfiguring peripeteia, and embracing horror, fragmentation, and moral ambiguity, Far Away enacts a radical aesthetic departure from traditional tragic form. The posthuman tragic mode that emerges through this departure dismantles anthropocentric hierarchies and invites the audience to envision a new model of horizontal coexistence—one grounded in ecological and zoe-centered ethics. Ultimately, this study argues that Far Away functions not as a pessimistic prophecy or a mere response to the post-apocalyptic era, but as a philosophical and theatrical blueprint for grappling with the ecological and ethical challenges of our time. Churchill’s posthuman tragedy confronts audiences with the unsettling reality of planetary entanglement, demanding that we become political animals that rethink the anthropocentric foundations of tragedy, and move towards a redefined subjectivity in relation to nonhuman entities.
