Vol.- No.35

This paper investigated the gold crown of Tomb M4 at Xigoupan (西溝畔) among gold crowns excavated from Xiongnu leaders’ tombs in the region of Inner Mongolia. The excavation of Xiongnu tombs were lively carried out meantime in the 1970s and the 1980s, and the existence of Xiongnu golden items such as gold belt hooks and gold crowns became known. Among the golden items, there are only four Xiongnu leaders’ gold crowns in total, which were excavated from a tomb at Aluchaideng (阿魯柴登) in Inner Mongolia, a tomb at Shenmu in Shaanxi Province, and an ancient ruins site at Khureemaral soum in Mongolia besides the Tomb M4 at Xigoupan, which is the subject of this paper. The gold crown ornaments of Tomb M4 at Xigoupan show different forms from other leader’s crowns such as that of Aluchaideng, and thus it is difficult to identify the true nature of the Xiongnu crown. Hence, this paper intended to find out the genealogy of the Xiongnu crowns by restoring the whole shape of the gold crown at Tomb M4 in Xigoupan, and to investigate the year and place of its creation. The investigation shows that the gold crowns at the Aluchideng tomb in Inner Mongolia and at Shenmu were made at the early stage from the 4thcentury BC to the 3rdcentury BC, and that the gold crown at Tomb M4 in Xigoupan was made at the last stage when the Xiongnu fell and was incorporated into China as southern Xiongnu. The crown restored by this research showed a cap made of hard organic material including felt, three gold plates below with the nature of a band crown, and three layers of gold crown erect ornaments above. And the pendant ornaments were considered to have a dual structure. That is, the restoration showed that right and left pendants of animal-style patterns hang down from around the temples, and an agate bead string is connected around the face behind the pendants. On this wise, the Xiongnu created their own unique culture of official hats, being influenced by the official hats of animal-shape styles in Saka, the Sarmathians, and Altai. In connection with the place of creating the gold crown of Tomb M4 at Xigoupan, the investigation of this study focused on the form of the pentagonal mountain-shaped gold crown ornament and the extrusion molding technique for fabricating the gold plates. Identifying the pentagonal mountain-shaped gold crown ornament as belonging to the Han’s (漢) jintang (金瑭) family worn by the official ranks of shizhong (侍中, “Palace Attendant”) or zhong changshi (中常侍, “Central Regular Attendant”), this study suggests the fabrication place should possibly have been a Chinese workshop. In addition, this study investigated the activities of pasture goldsmiths in China, considering that the extrusion molding technique had already been adopted by Chinese workshops in the 4thcentury BC.

Vol.21 No.1

Vol.75 No.-

In this study author gathered archaeological materials with chinese inscription from Hunnu sites, and analysed social structure and diplomatic relationship of north and south hunnu. In Ⅱ chapter, author divides materials with inscriptions into 5 groups(lacquerer, roofing tiles and pottery, bronze seal and gold buckle plates and figures out the archaeological context, contents and chronology of each inscriptions. Based on Ⅱ chapter, in Ⅲ chapter author compares features of inscriptions between North and South Hunnu. Those inscriptions from each Hunnu were found in different contexts and let us take a glimpse of social structure and diplomatic relationships in each Hunnu. Lacquerer were mainly found from supreme royal tombs of North Hunnu in Mongol. These inscribed lacquerer were made by Han imperial court(Kaogong and Shujun) around 8 BCE to 16 CE. It is worthwhile that one of this lacquerer was made by private workshop with similar technique of imperial court. This situation alludes that Chinese Court should prepare tribute to Shanyu of North Hunnu in a quite short time, and Chinese Court possibly ordered to private workshop to accomplish demands form Hunnu punctually . The embroidered brocade with inscriptions from Noyon–ool and Oglakhty was imported to Hunnu in different time. Brocade from Noyon–ool was probably made in the period of dynasty Xin, which are concerned with Wang Mang’ appeasement policy to Hunnu just after his enthronement. But finds from Oglakhty are dated after fall of North Hunnu. Contrast to North Hunnu, in South Hunnu’ boundaries, just bronze seal and roofing tiles with inscriptions of Hunnu was yielded. Furthermore, except inscriptions most of accompanied materials belongs to typical Chinese. It means South Hunnu became assimilated to China in material culture from the middle of 1th century BCE. And the contents of bronze seals shows that these south Hunnu, naturalized as Chinese officials, was dispatched to colonise another frontier tribes.

Vol.114 No.114

This study was initiated based on the conclusion that the lacquer ear cups of the Xiongnu were not produced by the Xiongnu people themselves but by craftsmen of the Chinese Han Dynasty. Therefore, the areas of study were not limited to the territory of the Xiongnu but also included the Han Dynasty and the areas of Lelang, Nanyue and Hexi in China. In addition, this study on the production, distribution and utilization of lacquer ear cups departs from existing research which focused mainly on the origins and development of the cups and their inscriptions. Before mentioning the details of the study, the conclusions for the three keywords of this studyare as follows: first, most lacquer ear cups with the inscription ‘Xiongnu’ were produced by craftsmen from Chang an (present-day Xi an) in Han China and mainly dare from the first century B.C.; second, the distribution of the cups was estimated based on the fact that the Chanyu (supreme ruler) and nobles of the Xiongnu visited Chang an in the first century B.C.; third, lacquer ear cups were mainly used to contain Chinese foods or alcohols; and fourth, it is estimated that the cups were buried in Xiongnu tombs due to the influence of the burial rituals of the Han Dynasty. In order to identify the production areas of the cups, their well-preserved features and inscriptions were the main criteria for this study. As a result, it was found that among the lacquer ear cups excavated from Xiongnu tombs, relatively more of them were made by craftsmen based in Chang an, the capital of the Han Dynasty, than in Sichuan. Such a finding shows the difference in the fact that the lacquer ear cups discovered in the central area of China and the Lelang and Nanyue areas were mostly made by craftsmen in Shu Han and Guanghan in Sichuan, not in Chang an. Moreover, judging from the fact that no imitation products have ever been found, and no lacquer trees grew in the territory of the Xiongnu, it is assumed that it was difficult to produce lacquer ear cups in Xiongnu - regardless of the actual inscriptions on the cups. Research on the production of lacquer ear cups excavated from the ancient tombs of the Xiongnu showed that they were mainly produced in the late first century B.C., which led to a further examination to determine the reason, the result of which shows that diplomatic relations between the Xiongnu and the Han Dynasty changed significantly after the regime of Emperor Wu of Han in the first century B.C., when Chanyus, princes, and nobles of Xiongnu frequented Chang an. It is also assumed that the people of Xiongnu received official gifts from the Han Dynasty when they attended the royal court, and that they also came into contact with the culture and products of the Han, including their clothes, cuisine, and housing, while they were staying at the royal palaces (Jianzhang Palace, Putao Palace, etc.) in Shangliyuan, Chang an. Therefore, it seems evident that the culture and products of the Han Dynasty were directly circulated by the Xiongnu elite in the late first century B.C., unlike in the previous periods, and this would have included the tomb and burial practices of the Han. Such assumptions are supported by research on the utilization of lacquer ear cups excavated from Xiongnu tombs, attempting to be agreed by other researchers. In particular, it was noted that alcohol and ingredients for making alcoholic drinks were included in the list of tributary goods which the Xiongnu were required to give to the Han Dynasty, or which the latter gave to the Xiongnu. In conclusion, it is conjectured that the upper-class Xiongnu enjoyed the grain-based wines of the Han, and that Chinese ear cups were used to serve alcohol accordingly. It is also assumed that the type of lacquer ear cups used to contain alcohol or food in daily life were also buried together with other lacquerwares in Xiongnu tombs.

Vol.0 No.52

Four commanderies of the Han dynasty play a key role to interpret ancient history of Northeast Asia. The reason is that the location of these four commanderies of the Han dynasty influences relationship of other neighboring countries. Because of its importances, many studies of them have been conducted. The location of the Han commanderies is still the most controversial topic. There are competing debates about the location of them: Some argues that they were northern part of Hebei province and western Liaoning province compared to argument that they located in Pyongyang of Korean peninsula. This acute debate caused by the lack of research on the why the Han dynasty set up these four commanderies. Thus, this study approached to the background of outposts of the Han dynasty and the reason of setting up these commanderies. The West Han had consumed their national power because of the relationship with the Huns of northern region and their military power had been hard hit in numerous attacks. In early stage of the West Han had no power to control the Huns, but the Han Wudi, the Martial Emperor, responded to use military force instead to the Sunshine policy. In this process, the Han Wudi needed to control the neighboring forces. There were Wiman Chosun and Yemaek on eastern part of the West Han. The West Han invaded in Wiman Chosun and set up three commanderies, with its main seat in Lolang in territory of Wiman Chosun. Subsequently the West Han attacked Yemaek and established Han Hyundo commandery in this area. The priority resulted in the commandery system was transitory and consequently the West Han failed to control the Huns. As a result, the background of setting up Han commanderies related the force of the Huns, Wiman Chosun and Yemeak. This result provides the key evidence to resolve the problem regarding the location of Han commanderies. According to record on the Huns, they bordered both Wiman Chosun and Yemeak. Chinese researchers found that East part of the Huns were located on Inner Mongolia, Jeokbong city, China. This fact implies that Wiman Chosun and Yemeak also were contiguous to Jeokbong city. According to these records, the location of the Han commanderies was northern part of Hebei province and western Liaoning province. These records can be useful reference for researching four commanderies of the Han dynasty.

This paper will examine the alliance relation between the Han and the Hunnu in the Shi Ji and the Han Shu. These two historical records use the term hwach’in ( hé qīn 和親) in the international tribute relation. The author also used the same term, alliance ‘화친(和親)’, alliance relation ‘화친관계’, alliance treaty ‘화친조약. likewise’ 1. The alliance relation between the Han and the Hunnu can be divided into three periods. ❶ the tribute-alliance period: When the Hunnu in the north was powerful while the Han in the south was weak, the Han sent a tribute to the powerful Hunnu. It 65 years from BC 198 to BC 133. ❷ the warfare period when the Han became strengthened and two powerful nations broke the alliance and had a warfare from BC 133년 to BC 52 for 81 years. ❸ the control alliance period when the Hunnu experienced the severe split and struggle and assumed the vassal to the powerful Han from BC 52 to AD 8 for 60 years. 2. In the tribute-alliance period, the weak Han carried the following to the powerful Han to keep the alliance. In the period when the north and the south stayed in the same powerful state. there was no alliance but warfare. I will deal with the two periods in another thesis. 3. In the tribute-alliance relation, the Han paid a tribute to the Hunnu as a vassal state. However, the Han was not the local state of the Hunnu or the history of the Han did not belong to that of the Hunnu. Meanwhile, in control-alliance relation, while the Hunnu pretended to be a vassal or subject state which is the dependent system used by the People’s Repubilc of China, the Hunnu was the local state or belonged to the history of the Han. Two amity treaties were the international relation to prevent the warfare and to keep the peace between the powerful nation and the weak nation. tribute-alliance and control-alliance should be the important meatures to discern the characteristics of the investiture and the tribute in the foreign relation in ancient Korea society.

Vol.- No.52

According to Weixianchuan(韋賢傳) in Hanshu(漢書), the Han(漢) dynasty “cut the Xiongnu(匈奴)’s left arm by conquering Chosŏn to the east and establishing the Xuantu(玄菟), Lelang(樂浪), and other(commanderies).” This statement allowed the scholars to suggest that there was a certain relationship between Weimanchosŏn(衛滿朝鮮) and the Xiongnu. Still, as there is a limitation of the contextual historical records, the discussion could not progress to the point of defining their relationship in literal terms. Thus, this paper will reveal how Weimanchosŏn and Xiongnu literally developed their relationship. The second century B.C. was a period when Weimanchosŏn, the Han dynasty, and Xiongnu had expanded their territories and influence, and inevitably collided into each other. Directly after its foundation, the Han dynasty had maintained their defensive position, but changed their policy and started a large scale war against the Xiongnu during the reign of Emperor Wu(武帝). In this process, the dynasty considered Weimanchosŏn as the Xiongnu’s left arm, and the perspective that the Han dynasty viewed Weimanchosŏn as ‘the Xiongnu’s left arm’ could be compared with the situation that the states in the west from China(西域) were called as ‘the Xiongnu’s right arm.’ This terms indicates that the Han people realized the relationship between Weimanchosŏn and the Xiongnu was as strong as having an economic relationship. To suggest the literal relationship between Weimanchosŏn and the Xiongnu, the records in Huainanzi(淮南子), compiled in the second century B.C., is worth to pay attention; the statement in this book, “Xiongnuchuhuiqiu(匈奴出穢裘; ‘huiqiu’ comes from the Xiongnu)” is especially important. Here, the term “hui(穢; ‘Ye’ in Korean)” could be analyzed with the same term in other historical texts in the Former Han(前漢) period. These “Hui” or “Huihao(穢貉; ‘Yemaek’ in Korean)” were closely related to Chosŏn, and even interpreted as the same body politic as Chosŏn in dependence of the texts. Meanwhile, considering the record in the reign of Emperor Wu that Weimanchosŏn was illustrated as “Huizhou(濊州; Yechu in Korean; Ye(Hui)’s province)”, it is confirmed that Ye(Hui) was another name for Weimanchosŏn in the second century B.C.. Thus, it is possible that Weimanchosŏn, known to the Han people as Hui(穢or 濊), traded “qiu(裘; an animal skin),” a phenomenon that reflected in the statement “Xiongnuchuhuiqiu(Ye’s animal skins comes from the Xiongnu).” Based on this hypothesis, this paper analyzed the statement from Huainanzi in the perspective of intermediate trade. In consideration of the examples such as “Palchosŏn(發朝鮮)’s Wenpi[文皮; a term comes from Guanzhi(管子)],” or “Wenbao[文豹; a term comes from a note on Hui(Ye), Dongyichuan”, in Sanguozhi(三國志)] “Huiqiu,” or “Hui(Ye)’s animal skin” is possibly a leopard skin. Hence, “Huiqiu” could be considered as a valuable or luxury, or prestige goods to show the political leaders’ authority high in scarcity value. In other words, the trade of animal skins between Weimanchosŏn and the Xiongnu had a characteristic of the trade of these ‘prestige goods’, rather than an intermediate trade. The main stage for this trade could be the Liaodong region, a place that Weimanchosŏn and the Xiongnu’s spheres of influence were overlapped. At that time, the region was an area that had a large damage from the Xiongnu’s invasion, and Weiman(衛滿) started to develop his power after he defected to Chosŏn. Although the Liaodong commandery(遼東 郡) was established, it did not have enough influence over the region until the reign of Emperor Wu, which allowed Weimanchosŏn and the Xiongnu to have a trade of “Huiqiu” through the Liaodong Peninsula. In particular, it seems to have been trading with the 左賢王forces of Liaodong who had 『漢書』韋賢傳에는漢이 衛滿朝鮮과전쟁을벌인사실에대해“東으로 朝鮮을쳐서, 玄菟·樂浪(郡)을 세워匈奴의 왼쪽팔을 잘랐다.”

Vol.- No.84

The main thesis is to reveal the vassal relation that the Han paid a tribute 貢物 and a princess 貢女 to the Xiongnu, and called the Xiongnu as a son of Heaven and assumed itself as an abolished town弊邑. To date, scholars in the People’‘s Republic of China and Korea produced an erroneous historical theory based on the historical records that the emperors received a tribute from neighboring countries, thus making a misjudgement on a tribute and investiture. The most well known example is the vassal state theory(藩屬理論) of the People’s Repubilc of China. This article is the counterargument against the unilateral vassal state theory. 1. The alliance relation between the Han and the Xiongnu can be divided into three periods. ❶ the tribute-alliance period: When the Xiongnu in the north was powerful while the Han in the south was weak, the Han sent a tribute to the powerful Xiongnu. It 65 years from B.C.198 to B.C.133. ❷ the warfare period when the Han became strengthened and two powerful nations broke the alliance and hA.D. a warfare from B.C.133년 to B.C.52 for 81 years. ❸ the control alliance period when the Xiongnu experienced the severe split and struggle and assumed the vassal to the powerful Han from B.C.52 to A.D. 8 for 60 years. I have alreA.D.y dealt with the tribute-alliance period, and now I will deal with the remaining two periods. 2. In the period when the north and the south stayed in the same powerful state. there was no alliance but warfare. During the 46 years(B.C.133∼B.C.87) when the Xiongnu and the Han did not make an alliance, they have warfare every two years, which brought a huge loss in both parties. In 121 and 119, the Han sent Huo Qubing who won against the Xiongnu and weakened the Xiongnu. On the contrary, the Han army also experienced severe damage and lots of officials died as well as some generals like Zhao Xin surrendered and then joined to the Xiongnu army. The Han population was cut to the half of the original one, and people starved to the death. However, the Han could not make the Xiongnu as a vassal state. Thus, the Han Wudiis considered as the well known example of the emperor who was a warmonger putting his people to the poverty like the First Emperer of China. 3. In the controlling amity period, the weak Xiongnu kept the peace as carrying the following to the poweful Han 1) Xiongnu Chanyu’s assuming the vassal to the Han 2) Sending a son of Xiongnu Chanyu to the Han as a political hostage 3) In the control-alliance relation, there was no tribute of the Xiongnu yearly. On the other hand, whenever Chanyu came down, the Han bestowed gifts, which resulted in the end the Han opposed to the visit of Chanyu due to the economic burden. 4. In the tribute-alliance relation, the Han paid a tribute to the Xiongnu as a vassal state. However, the Han was not the local state of the Xiongnu or the history of the Han did not belong to that of the Xiongnu. Meanwhile, in control-alliance relation, while the Xiongnu pretended to be a vassal or subject state which is the dependent system used by the People’s Repubilc of China, the Xiongnu was the local state or belonged to the history of the Han. Two amity treaties were the international relation to prevent the warfare and to keep the peace between the powerful nation and the weak nation. tribute-alliance and control-alliance should be the important meatures to discern the characteristics of the investiture and the tribute in the foreign relation in ancient Korea society.

Vol.- No.52

According to Weixianchuan(韋賢傳) in Hanshu(漢書), the Han(漢) dynasty “cut the Xiongnu(匈奴)`s left arm by conquering Choson to the east and establishing the Xuantu(玄?), Lelang(樂浪), and other(commanderies).” This statement allowed the scholars to suggest that there was a certain relationship between Weimanchoson(衛滿朝鮮) and the Xiongnu. Still, as there is a limitation of the contextual historical records, the discussion could not progress to the point of defining their relationship in literal terms. To suggest the literal relationship between Weimanchoson and the Xiongnu, the records in Huainanzi(淮南子), compiled in the second century B.C., is worth to pay attention; the statement in this book, “Xiongnuchuhuiqiu(匈奴出穢?; `huiqiu` comes from the Xiongnu)” is especially important. Although the Liaodong commandery(遼東郡) was established, it did not have enough influence over the region until the reign of Emperor Wu, which allowed Weimanchoson and the Xiongnu to have a trade of “Huiqiu” through the Liaodong Peninsula. In particular, it seems to have been trading with the 左賢王forces of Liaodong who had Liaodong as a base of power. Conclusively, the record in Weixianchuan in Hanshu was an illustration to demonstrate the Weimanchoson and the Xiongnu`s amicable political and militaristic relationship based on the trade of the animal skins. If the hypothesis in this paper that these two powers had a trade of `prestige goods` is not disapproved, the political relationship between them would be even more closely connected. The statement that Weimanchoson was the Xiongnu`s left arm, arguably, refers to this relationship.

Vol.- No.85

This study investigates the animal-shaped artifacts of Xiongnu culture, derived from Scythian animal styles, to elucidate the characteristics of Xiongnu cultural elements present at the Xichagou site and to infer the identity of the group inhabiting this area. The Xichagou site is distinguished by the presence of animal motif plates (types I–V) and ceremonial artifacts (types III–V) associated with both the Xiongnu and Han regions of China. The data indicate that the Xiongnu artifacts at Xichagou were not confined to a specific Xiongnu region but were introduced through a network of various regions. Additionally, the Xiongnu animal-shaped artifacts found at Xichagou reveal a temporal shift in their usage: initially as prestige goods of the highest social status, and later as grave goods in small to medium-sized tombs of the general population. The artifacts from Xichagou closely resemble those of the common warrior classes, rather than the elite Xiongnu culture. These artifacts, particularly the Xiongnu animal motif plates, functioned as symbols of social integration and affiliation within the Xiongnu Empire. This suggests that the Xichagou group was recognized by the Xiongnu as a quasi-imperial entity and likely acted as a liaison with the Xiongnu in the northeastern Manchurian region. The predominance of Xiongnu cultural elements, specifically animal-shaped artifacts, at Xichagou, implies that the Xichagou inhabitants were unlikely to be ethnically Xiongnu but instead may have adopted a symbolic role reflecting Xiongnu elite consciousness. Furthermore, the co-occurrence of these artifacts with bimetallic iron swords-key indicators of Buyeo culture in subsequent archaeological sites such as Jilin Laoheshen and Cheongju Osong-suggests a possible connection between the Xichagou group and the emerging Buyeo power in the region. Therefore, it is more appropriate to interpret the Xichagou group as a newly emerging entity characterized by cultural pluralism and diversity, adapting to the evolving regional power dynamics, rather than attributing them to a specific surrounding culture.
