This thesis examines how the basis of the climate crisis, threatening the lives of all mankind today, is projected and depicted through literary works. It explores the various perspectives through which literature reflects on problems between humans, society, and nature, presenting global tasks. In traditional literature, only a passive attitude or a static depiction of reality was described. Amitav Ghosh's perspective in The Great Derangement and Gun Island broadened the scope of the discussion of modernity, the source and root of global warming, to the dominant political relationships between Western and non-Western societies. In particular, he examined it from the extended perspective of ‘postcolonial ecocriticism,’ exploring issues of divisions and injustices not only between humans but also between humans and non-humans. Postcolonial ecocriticism, systematized through the development from the combined perspectives of post-colonialism and ecocriticism, encompasses two themes: human inequality and environmental abuse and destruction, expanded and reproduced by colonial rule. It also seeks ways to coexist and communicate with all ecological beings on Earth while dismantling both anthropocentric and Eurocentric perspectives. Based on post-colonial ecological criticism, Ghosh presents the causes of the climate crisis stemming from the spread of modernity, a global phenomenon that has occurred simultaneously in many parts of the world since the 18th century. He argues that global modernity eventually caused discrimination, isolation, and polarization between the West and the non-Western, humans and nature, literature and science—relations that are colonial in nature—through an arrogant will to act, including non-humans. Due to this polarization, human domination, oppression, and exploitation by humans, as well as oppression and exploitation of nature and non-human beings, have been structured for centuries. According to Ghosh, the carbon-intensive economy, which persisted for more than 300 years after the spread of modernity, is considered the primary culprit of today's climate crisis. This crisis began with the early modernization of European countries, but Ghosh asserts that the industrialization of the non-Western world has expanded explosively since the mid-20th century. He argues that the current global warming and climate crisis need to be recognized as the common and cumulative responsibility of mankind. Ghosh named the period when ecological destruction accelerated explosively due to the global and simultaneous manifestation and spread of modernity as ‘the time of great derangement.’ He emphasizes that the climate crisis is intensified by a crisis of cultural and literary imagination. To address all the oppression, bondage, and exploitation systemic between the Western and the non-Western, humans and nature, and between humans and external beings, it is necessary to restore ecological convergence alongside political and social reconciliation of the West and the non-Western through post-colonialism. Above all, Ghosh argues that the literary imagination must be strengthened for this purpose. In this way, Ghosh analyzes the irony present in 19th-century modern novels alongside a profound interpretation of the climate crisis and modernity. He criticizes the problem of excluding the severe human issue of the climate crisis from serious fiction. Through Gun Island, Ghosh's literary concerns and reflections are vividly portrayed and elevated into the climate novel, a genre known as cli-fi. His efforts to properly confront and overcome the increasingly deepening human crisis and social phenomena in Ghosh's two works can be viewed as a source of inspiration for the approaches literary works can take to engage with the climate and human crisis. In particular, undertaking such pioneering work on the current climate crisis, which other writers and artists may be avoiding or passively addressing, will challenge human society both now and in the future.
The Ecocritical Imagination of Modernist Fiction: Conrad, Joyce, and Woolf As the research topic of Ecocriticism expanded beyond its previous boundary of nature to that of the environment, it resulted in the rediscovery of ecocritical consciousness in Modernist novels which previous ecocritical research failed to take notice of. The primary focus of this dissertation is to identify and analyze the perception of nature and environmental insight appearing in three distinguished modernist novels: Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, James Joyce’s Dubliners, and Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse. This dissertation not only explore subjects of Imperialism, urban landscape and feminism through ecocriticism methodology but also elucidates the importance of Modernist novels as research topic for ecocritical studies. In particular, chapter II takes a postcolonial ecocritical approach towards Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, focusing on the existential meaning of the wilderness as a resisting force against Imperialism and how ivory is materialized and represented as a double metaphor of the illusion of Imperial expansion and colonial exploitation of natural resources. In chapter III, I delve into three short stories in Joyce’s Dubliners ― ‘An Encounter’, ‘A Little Cloud’, and ‘The Dead’ ─ from an urban ecocritical perspective. In turn, I explore recurrent environmental factors ─ changes of weather, poverty-strickcen Dublin landscape, and the urban environment ─ and criticism of rural focused ideology that the Irish Literary Revival aimed for and the paralysis, alienation, desire to escape, and failure. In chapter IV, the dissertation interprets Woolf’s To the Lighthouse from an ecofeminist point of view. By investigating Woolf’s diaries and essays which contain her personal observations and experiences, I discuss how androgyny, which Woolf suggests to form sympathy and solidarity for women otherized by dichotomic hierarchy, can play a positive role in the freedom of women as well as nature.
This paper aims to analyze the Anthropocenic narratives in The Hungry Tide by Indian writer Amitav Ghosh. While Ghosh addresses climate change in the Anthropocene, he criticizes imperialism and the modern mechanistic paradigm that prevent us from recognizing it as a crisis. Instead, he suggests vitalism, which calls for recognizing the vitality of nonhuman Nature, as an alternative. Ghosh’s ecological consciousness is also reflected in The Hungry Tide, which features several narrative strategies. Therefore, this paper discusses how Ghosh represents the crisis of the Anthropocene by analyzing various narratives in The Hungry Tide. In Chapter 2, I analyze how the Sundarbans, the novel’s setting, becomes an object of physical and epistemological violence due to imperialism and the modern mechanistic paradigm. Ghosh sheds light on the conflict between the islanders and the tigers, particularly around the Morichjhãpi massacre, a key event in the novel. This violence ultimately becomes epistemological, affecting beings deprived of agency. By presenting contrasting moments where beings considered inert vividly reveal their existence, the novel demonstrates that the imperialistic mindset will not properly understand Nature in the Anthropocene. In Chapter 3, based on Ghosh’s vitalism, I analyze three narrative strategies for those who have been deprived of agency to recover it. The first is a narrative in which the protagonists newly recognize the vitality of nonhumans through encounters. The second strategy is narrativizing the landscape of the Sundarbans itself, which plays an important role in the novel, as much as the main characters. Lastly, Ghosh presents the aesthetics of coexistence created by the landscape and the inhabitants—the human and nonhuman—through the legend of Bon Bibi, a folk tale of the Sundarbans. In Chapter 4, I examine the vitalist politics that Ghosh presents as a way to overcome the crisis of the Anthropocene, and analyze how it is represented in the novel. Ghosh indicates the possibility of a vitalistic political community in which humans and nonhumans can coexist, and suggests ways to resolve various conflicts occurring in the Anthropocene. This paper ultimately argues that Ghosh suggests storytelling as a means to realize vitalist politics, positing The Hungry Tide as the writer’s cognitive mapping to represent and reflect on the crisis of the Anthropocene. This paper began with the comprehensive purpose of reflecting on the crisis in an era requiring humanistic reflection and examining how literature is representing the present era. As a writer actively participating in the climate crisis discourse, Ghosh represents and reflects on the current era through storytelling. Since the Anthropocene appears in human lives in various forms, the novel form, as part of the writers’ efforts to comprehensively integrate and construct these aspects, will continue to provide narratives that can connect people through empathy.
