레이몽 부동의 ‘일상적 합리성이론’에 관한 시론

이 논문은 세계적 석학이고 현대 사회학 이론 분야에 커다란 기여를 한 레이몽 부동의 사회학을 그 후반부 저작들을 중심으로 소개하는 데에 목적이 있다. 부동은 자신의 후반부 저작을 관통하는 생각을 ‘일상적 합리성이론’이라고 부르며 기존의 이론 없는 경험적 사회학과 네오 맑시즘에 대한 이론적 대안으로 제시하고 있다. 여기서 필자가 그의 일상적 합리성 이론에 주목을 하는 이유는, 이 이론이 현대사회의 이념적 양극화와 가치관의 혼란에 대한 긍정적 대안을 제시하고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 경제학의 지배적 패러다임인 합리적 선택이론을 극복하고 새로운 통합 과학적 인문사회학 패러다임을 제시하고 있기 때문이다. 이 논문은 다음과 같은 차례로 기술되었다. 1장은 문제 제기로서 어째서 21세기 이 시점에서 우리가 부동의 일상적 합리성이론을 주목해야 할 필요가 있는지를 알리려 했다. 2장은 부동의 ‘일상적 합리성이론’을 체계적으로 소개하려 했다. 이 이론이 어떤 점에서 경제학의 합리적 선택 이론을 넘어설 수 있는가를 보여줌과 동시에, 일상적 합리성이론의 핵심적 주장들을 살펴보았다. 3장은 ‘일상적 합리성 이론’이 어떤점에서 합리적 선택이론이 처해 있는 논리적 딜레마를 해결하고, 현대 사회학 이론에 새로운 지평을 열어줄 수 있는가를 보여주었다. 4장에서는 일상적 합리성이론이 의회민주주의의 기초인 일상생활 속의 상식을 회복하는 데에 기여할 수 있으며, 이 작업을 통해 후기 현대사회의 가치관회복과 의회민주주의 제도의 정상화에 크게 기여할 수 있다고 보았다. 5장의 맺는말에서는 ‘일상적 합리성이론’이 현대 민주주의의 이념적 기초를 이해하는 데에 도움이 될 뿐만 아니라, 표류하고 있는 인문사회학의 새로운 소명의식을 제공하고 후기 현대사회의 위기 극복에 필요한 사회학의 역할을 가르쳐줄 수 있다고 보았다. The purpose of this article is to describe the main problematics of a great french scholar, Raymond Boudon’s sociology on the basis of his later works. Boudon calls his sociology as a theory of ordinary rationality from about 2005, whose objective is to propose an alternative to the empirical sociology without theoretical problematics and also to the neo-marxist sociology. The main reasons why I pay attention to his theory of ordinary rationality are as follows. Boudon’s theory of rationality has two merits. One is to suggest the contructive alternative to the ideological polarization and the confused value system in late modern society. The other is to propose the integrated paradigm of human sciences against the dominant paradigm of economic science, rational choice theory. This paper is composed of five chapters. Chapter I presents the reasons why we should pay attention to the theory of ordinary rationality of Raymond Boudon in this period of late modernity of 21st century. Chapter II introduces systematically the theory of ordinary rationality of R. Boudon. Examining the main arguments of ordinary rationality theory, I suggest this theory can overcome the logical impasse of rational choice theory. Chapter III tries to show in what way this theory can solve the logical impasse of the rational choice theory and open the new prospects for contemporary sociological theory. Chapter IV argues that ordinary rationality theory can contribute to the restauration of the common sense in our every day life, and this also makes for the recovery of the value system of our society and for the normalization of representative democracy system. Chapter V concludes that the theory of ordinary rationality will help us not only to understand the ideological foundation of modern democracy but also to provide the new sense of calling for the scholars of human sciences to assume the responsibilities of sociologist to overcome the crisis of late modern society.

21세기에 다시 읽는 에밀 뒤르케임의 사회학 - 한국사회학의 새로운 이론적 위상 정립을 위하여

이 연구의 목표는 뒤르케임의 저작들이 어떠한 통찰력 덕분에 출간 후 한 세기가 넘는 세월 동안 여러 가지 도전들을 겪으면서도 수많은 사회학자들로부터 고전으로 인정받고 발전되어 왔는가를 검토하는 것이다. 연구에서 필자가 사용한 방법론은 뒤르케임 연구 관련 사회학자들의 문헌연구와 그 내용분석이다. 그러나 이 주제가 너무 광범위하고 그동안 축적된 수많은 연구들이 있기 때문에, 필자는 연구범위를 21세기 초부터 20년 동안의 뒤르케임 연구들에만 한정시켰다. 그리고 이 연구를 전략적으로 세 단계로 나누어 보았다. 첫째는 뒤르케임 관련 기념총서 세 권-『사회학 창시자로서의 에밀 뒤르케임(2008)』, 『뒤르케임은 오늘날 우리가 상식적으로 이해하는 뒤르케임이 맞는가?(2011)』,『21세기 오늘날 다시 보는 뒤르케임(2018)』- 의 내용 중 몇 가지 핵심적 주제들을 간략히 검토해 보았다. 둘째는 위의 세 기념총서 중 소르본 대학에서 뒤르케임 교수직을 계승하고 평생 고전사회학을 연구해온 ‘부동’의 논문과 저술에 초점을 맞추어 그가 문화사회학 이론과 지배적인 뒤르케임 연구들에 대해 어떠한 비판적 입장과 평가를 내리고 있는가를 검토해 보았다. 마지막 셋째는 현대사회학의 거장인 부동이 다양한 고전사회학 전통을 종합해서 뒤르케임 사회학을 어떻게 혁신적․독창적으로 해석하고 그것을 기반으로 자신의 고유한 현대사회학 이론인 ‘일상적 합리성 이론’을 만들어 갔는가를 그의 후반기 저작들을 중심으로 탐색해보았다. 이러한 작업의 결과, 21세기에 들어 새롭게 수행된 뒤르케임 관련 연구들과 부동의 사회학이 현대사회가 필요로 하는 사회학의 새로운 소명의식과 정신을 공유하고 있음을 보여주었다. 그것은 각자 자신의 시대에 맞게 새로운 ‘사회학 이론 틀’을 만들어서, 현대사회의 ‘이념 갈등’과 ‘시민적 가치관’ 혼란의 원인을 진단하고 대안을 제시하는 과학적 기반을 제공하는 것이다. 뒤르케임에서 부동에 이르는 학자들이 자기 분야를 개척하고 해당 시대의 거장으로 남아있을 수 있었던 이유는, 이들이 각자가 필요로 하는 시대적 과제 해결을 위해서 기존의 고전사회학을 혁신적으로 해석하고 창의적으로 종합함으로써 새로운 인문사회학적 ‘분석 틀’을 개척했기 때문이다. 특히 37년간 부동에게서 배우고 그의 저작들을 연구해 온 필자는, 그의 ‘일상적 합리성 이론’에서 현대사회의 이념적 갈등 상황과 대의민주주의 제도의 위기를 극복할 수 있는 참신한 이론적 대안을 발견할 수 있었다. 그의 이론적 대안은 한국사회가 가장 시급히 필요로 하는 좌․우 이념 갈등의 극복과 21세기 우리 상황에 적합한 새로운 ‘시민적 가치관’ 정립에 중요한 가르침을 주었다. 결국 필자가 5년간의 연구 끝에 발견한 21세기의 새로운 사회학 사상은, 사회학의 고전들을 지나치게 고정된 틀로 이해하지 않고 시대적 과제에 맞게 창의적 방식으로 종합하여 합리적․과학적 기반을 갖춘 새로운 통합과학적 인문사회학을 찾는 것이다. 필자는 이 모범 사례를 레이몽 부동에게서 찾았고, 그가 제안한 ‘일상적 합리성 이론’은 한국사회의 이념 갈등을 극복하는 것은 물론, 사회과학의 기초연구를 강화하거나 구체적 사회문제를 해결하기 위한 정책의 형태로 활용될 수 있음을 보여주었다. The purpose of this article is to describe and explain the reasons why so many modern sociologists have respected and developed Durkheim’s works as classics even though there have been various critiques against his sociology for over one century. The methodology of our research is the content analysis of the literature concerning Durkheimian studies collected by my research design. Because of a great many studies accumulated concerning Durkheim in this period, I set limits the period of our research from 2000 to 2020 and check various books published in this period. But still there are many books studied and published by sociologists of various schools, I strategically planned our work in three stages. Firstly, I have chosen three books celebrating the birth and the death of our founder of discipline. They are Emile Durkheim as a founder of modern sociology(2008), Durkheim whom we usually talk about is really Durkheimian? by his own standards?(2011), Emile Durkheim reevaluated by the view of sociologists of late modern society(2018). We reviewed these three books by focusing on key concepts as solidarity, cultural sociology, typology of social relations. And then we have explored the some new areas of sociology such as economic sociology, political sociology inherited from the Durkheimian sociological tradition. Secondly, among various articles edited by three books mentioned above, we have chosen only two important articles of Raymond Boudon to clarify his theoretical positions vis à vis cultural sociology of Jeffrey Alexander and the other dominant positions in interpreting The Elementary forms of religious life. Finally we have explored the Raymond Boudon’s sociological theory-theory of ordinary rationality- from the view of 21st contemporary sociology with special emphasis on the ways of synthesizing the various classical sociologists such as Tocqueville, Durkheim, Weber, Simmel, and Adam Smith. In this research, we specially paid attention to his innovative and original way of interpreting the Durkheimian sociology on the basis of his overall synthesis of the various classical sociologies. And then we have observed him to elaborate his own theory of ordinary rationality as a master scholar of this domain. As a result of our research, we have confirmed that Durkheim and Boudon are sharing the same spirit of vocation of sociology and professionalism in seeking their own ways of sociology for the new academic frontier areas. This spirit consists in elaboration of new theoretical problematics in tune with their times, necessary for resolving the problems of ideological conflicts and for establishing righteous value system for the contemporary society. In this research we have confirmed the reasons why Boudon and Durkheim could become master scholars in their times in their own way. It’s because of their spirit for pioneering the new social scientific problematics to resolve the problems of their times. I finally reconfirm the scholar spirit and professionalism in their adventurous and persevering works for creating new theoretical problematics against various challenges ahead of their vocation. Personally, I think that our research will provide new theoretical alternative for Korean society and the community of Korean sociologists who are wandering facing the crisis without any solid theoretical and methodological foundations. I hope that this kind of theoretical research will help us to overcome the deep-seated ideological conflicts of our society and to establish the righteous value system, adequate and necessary for realizing the new future just order. The new sociological paradigm of the 21st century we have discovered will guide us to the new way of thought in interpreting classical sociological tradition for developing boldly original ways of thoughts in tune with the task of our times. This will help us to find a integrated human & social sciences on the basis of a new rational and scientific foundation.

괴물, 일상적 삶을 사는 사람, ‘좋음’의 소유자 -찰스 테일러 철학에서 정체성과 도덕성의 관계-

Charles Taylor’s endeavor to reestablish the ethical in Part I of Sources of the Self does not directly refute postmodernism, but it offers a fresh perspective to those who accept postmodernism without scrutiny. Taylor challenges the notion that values are detached from reality, seeking the foundational basis of reason in the essence of human agents, beyond historical or psychological realms. This discussion surpasses Taylor’s initial project of describing modernity. Particularly, his approach to moral theories and ethics can be seen as a fundamental analysis of human agency, which still holds relevance even in our contemporary era of heightened diversification. This article centers on Taylor’s exploration of the ethical’s indispensability. Taylor contends that mainstream moral theories, by neglecting the concept of happiness in morality, fail to fully grasp the moral response and aspirations of the agents they aim to elucidate. Drawing on this expanded ethical framework, Taylor diverges from the naturalist as he seeks a deeper understanding of the self. In this phenomenological analysis, I aim to scrutinize the areas where Taylor may have overlooked crucial details.
