뒤르케임 탄생 150주년에 다시 읽는 에밀 뒤르케임의 사회학

필자는 뒤르케임 탄생 150주년을 계기로, 한국사회학 공동체가 뒤르케임과 그 전통의 사회학을 읽어야 할 다음의 10가지 이유를 찾아보았다. 1) 뒤르케임 사회학의 후반기 인식론적 입장은 해석학이다. 2) 뒤르케임 사회학은 19세기말-20세기초반 과격한 사회주의 운동들에 대한 학문적 대안으로 등장했다.3) 신뒤르케임주의자들이 추구하는 강한 프로그램으로서의 문화사회학은 그 이론적 기반을 뒤르케임의 <종교생활의 원초적 형태>에 두고 있다. 4) 뒤르케임의 사회학은 후기 현대 사회의 가치관 혼란의 문제를 해결할 이론적 자원을 제공해 준다. 5) 한국사회의 새정부 출범 이후 크게 부각된 실용주의를 평가할 이론적 자원을 뒤르케임에게서 찾을 수 있다. 6) 현대사회의 지식인의 역할에 대한 성찰적 근거를 제공한다. 7) 뒤르케임의 교육사회학 분야의 저서들을 그 지성사적 맥락과 함께 번역, 소개할 필요가 있다. 8) 뒤르케임의 시민종교론을 한국사회 맥락에서 다시 논의해 볼 필요가 있다. 9) 프랑스의 2세대 뒤르케임주의자들에 대한 보다 체계적 연구가 필요하다. 그리고 이와 동시에 미국사회학자 중 로버트 우드나우의 문화사회학에 대한 연구가 필요하다. 10) 한국사회학 공동체에서 뒤르케임과 그 학파의 사회이론을 어떻게 가르쳐야 할것인가에 대한 진지한 논의가 필요하다. 필자는 이러한 10가지 문제제기를 기초로, 뒤르케임 탄생 150주년을 계기로 한국사회학 공동체에서 지난 30년 동안 뒤르케임과 그 학파들에 대해 이루어졌던 한국 사회학자들의 작업들을 한눈에 조감하고 비판적으로 검토하는 사회학의 사회학적 작업을 시도해 보았다. 이것은 한국의 사회학 이론의 현재를 반성하고, 그 바탕 위에서 우리식의 사회이론을 만들어내는 데 필요한 기초 작업을 하는 데 필수적이다. 우리는 현재 사회학의 위기상황을 돌파하기 위해 한국사회의 특수성만을 강조할 것이 아니라, 세계로 눈을 돌려 세계화의 커다란 흐름 속에서 서구 사회학이 이 위기상황을 벗어나기 위해 고전사회학으로부터 무엇을 다시 배우려 하는 것을 크게 주목할 필요가 있다. 그것은 고전 사회힉자들의 소명의식의 재학습과 사회학의 인문과학화를 통한 고전사회학 문제의식의 재발견이다. In this article, I try to find the 10 reasons why korean sociological community should still read Durkheim and the durkhemian tration books. The 10 reasons are as follows. 1) the late durkheimian`s epstemological position is that of hermeunitics 2) we must keep in mind the fact that one of the purposes of the establishment of durkhemian sociology in France is to find the academic alternative against the challenge of various streams of radical socialisms 3) the neodurkheimian`s cultural sociology as strong program is based on the theoretical interpretation of <The Elementary Forms of religious Life(1912)>4) durkhemian sociology helps us to solve the problem of decline of social values in post-modern society 5) we can find the theoretical ressources for evaluating the pragmatism as political philosophy of new korean government 6) we can find the theoretical basis by which we can evaluate the role of intellectuals in late modern society 7) we need to translate the durkheimian books in the domain of sociology of education in consideration of its intellectual context 8) we need to introduce the intellectual debates about civil religion in korean context in consideration of actual religious conflict and the decline of value system in Korea 9) we need to do more systematic study about second generation durkhemians-Marcel Granet, Marcel Mauss, Celestin Bougle etc-. And at the same time we need to supplement the study of american neodurkhemians in doing additional study about Robert Wuthnow as sociologist of culture 10) we need to develop the more serious debate about the teaching method of durkhemian and his school`s books. On the basis of these ten arguments, I try to reexamine the various works of korean sociologists in interpreting and translating durkheimian and his school`s academic works during past 30 years. As conclusion, I argue that to overcome the actual crisis of korean sociology, we need to learn the sociological lessons of western sociologists in reinterpreting the sociological classics in the era of globalization.

이 논문의 목표는 한국의 사회학자들에 의한 뒤르케임의 문화사회학에 대한 연구 현황을 초창기부터 현재까지 검토해봄으로써, 뒤르케임 전통의 문화 연구에 보완되어야 할 점들을 찾아보고, 이러한 평가를 기준으로 향후 뒤르케임 전통의 문화이론 연구가 오늘날 한국 사회가 직면하고 있는 문제 해결에 적실성을 가지고 가르치고 연구될 수 있도록 성찰의 기회를 마련해보는 것이다. 이 글은 크게 세 부분으로 나누어진다. 첫째, 필자는 뒤르케임의 문화사회학과 관련해서 한국 사회학 공동체의 주목을 가장 크게 받은 알렉산더(Jeffrey Alexander)의 저서를 중심으로, 그가 뒤르케임의 문화사회학을 강조하게 된 지적 배경과 그가 분류한 뒤르케임 전통의 학문적 후계자들(벨라, 실즈,기 어츠, 우드나우 등)의 이론적 문제의식의 계승을 검토해보았다. 둘째는, 프랑스 사회학 공동체가 주목하는 뒤르케임의 전통을 발전적으로 계승한 2세대 뒤르케임주의자인 마르셀 모스, 마르셀 그라네, 모리스 알박스 등의 이론적 문제의식을 간단히 정리해보았다. 특히 2세대 뒤르케임주의자인 이들이 그의 스승인 뒤르케임의 이론적, 방법론적 문제의식을 어떻게 혁신하고 계승해서 현대 문화와 타 문화권에 대한 새로운 문화사회학적 연구 전통을 성공적으로 확립해나갔는가를 탐색해보았다. 그리고 마지막으로는 초창기부터 현재까지 한국 사회학자들이 해온 뒤르케임에 관한 다양한 연구들을 조감하고, 그 특징을 몇 가지 유형별로 기술한 후에 이러한 지적 자원을 가지고 한국에서 뒤르케임의 문화사회학 전통을 연구와 교육 분야에서 더 적실성있게 계발하려면 어떠한 이론적, 방법론적 전략이 필요한가를 탐색해보았다. This article purports to draw some sociological lessons for the future development of korean cultural sociological studies on the basis of study in durkhemian tradion’s sociological studies by korean sociologists. For this purpose, it delves into the intellectual background and some more detailed academic projects of diverse efforts of korean sociologists in this domain. This article composes of three parts. First part examines the intellectual background and analyses the detailed academic programs of korean sociologists’ cultural sociological studies. Within this work, author also includes the academic efforts of translation of major works of french second generation’s (Marcel Mauss, Marcel Granet, Maurice Halbwachs) durkhemian sociology. Second part makes typologies of these works and evaluates the academic activities of korean sociolgists in this domain. On the basis of this work, author suggests some future tasks of korean sociologists in cultural sociological studies. These tasks are as follows: We must more clarify the epistemological position of post-phase Durkhemian sociology and need to develop durkhemian tradtion’s sociology on this basis. We need to explore the second generation durkhemian school’s works. Third part suggests some sociological lessons from the above mentioned analyses. In conclusion, it suggests that we should pay more attention to the intellectual background of durkhemian and neo-durkhemian cultural sociology for the future development of korean cultural sociology. And for this purpose, we need to develop durkhemian tradition’s cultural sociology around the themes of civil religion, new community value system, trust building works through new social movements.
