Vol.6 No.2
In this study, the need for digital youth activities has arisen along with non-face-to-face activities in youth activity sites after Corona 19, and many youth activity programs are being converted to non-face-to-face digital. However, many youth activity facilities are still experiencing difficulties in converting to digital youth activities due to various problems. In particular, it is a time when it is necessary to think about the approach using smartphones, which accesses all these media the most, as well as the use of websites, SNS, and YouTube channels of each institution where young people get the most information. Also, the accessibility of multicultural youth and disabled youth, who are most vulnerable to these changes, was also required to be studied. Therefore, in this paper, I tried to present the parts necessary for the transition to digital youth activities in preparation for the rapidly changing diverse and egalitarian society and the post-COVID digital society. To this end, a region called Busan was selected and the current status of digital youth activities and online platforms for public youth training facilities was fully investigated.
Vol.11 No.4
Purpose: Digital transformation in the youth sector has focused on expanding digital activities and environments within youth facilities, enabling the continuous generation and accumulation of data on youth. However, the development of a systematic data process to support data-driven decision-making in these settings remains at an early stage. This study proposed a youth activity data processing workflow for digital transformation, based on the service design methodology. Methodology: In cooperation with the A Youth Center in Seoul, this study was conducted according to the four stages of the double diamond process: discovery, definition, idea development, and delivery. Findings: Based on the experiences of youth and certified juvenile guiders, the main stakeholders of youth activity facilities, the lack of coherent process for data collection, management, integration, and feedback was identified as the core problem. Accordingly, we developed a service blueprint to visualize the youth activity data process and iteratively advanced it through pilot data collection and stakeholder interviews to evaluate its applicability in real-world settings. Conclusions: This study developed and visualized end-to-end data processing workflow for youth activity data, from collection and management to integration and feedback, in the form of a service blueprint. This provides a practical operational foundation for establishing a data-driven decision-making system in youth facilities.
Vol.38 No.3
This article examines the adolescents’ experiences of sexual violence in digital media space in the context of gender order. It employs a narrative inquiry to analyze the stories of four youths who experienced digital sexual violence. This study found the following: First, the digital media space is space where youths are at risk of gender-based violence, while simultaneously is a space to form identities, build relationships, resist and learn. Second, the research participants objectify their experience of digital sexual assault as a socio-structural problem, an attack on feminists, or something raunchy and unpleasant. It is a survival strategy they employ to minimize the damage of the violence. Third, only those with available resources and networks can objectify their experience, whereas those disconnected from the discourse cannot. Fourth, digital sexual violence develops into a source of fear when it poses physical threats offline. On these accounts, adolescents‘ survival strategies in a digital space tend to be inadequate to provide safety from violence. These findings suggest that gender order in digital space needs to be carefully considered to address the issue of digital sexual violence in adolescents. They also imply that institutional and policy-related efforts are required for our society to imagine adolescents as subjects who can express their sexuality.
Vol.23 No.2
This study investigates the specific nature of “hard-fun” experienced by youth as they actively engage with advanced digital technologies in a hands-on, science-and-technology youth program. Additionally, it explores the broader educational implications of these experiences. Data were collected through participant observations and interviews during a three-week tech-centered youth program involving 32 participants aged 11 to 13. The corpus consisting of field notes, activity logs, and interview transcripts was analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis to unpack the educational significance of the challenges and enjoyment the participating youths experienced. The findings reveal that instead of remaining passive recipients of knowledge, the youth experienced “hard-fun” as active “programmers” who immersed themselves in problem-solving and autonomously shaped their own learning environments. This immersive experience enhanced participants’ openness toward emerging technologies and fostered a sustained interest in exploring future career pathways in related disciplines. Based on these insights, this study proposes a forward-looking framework for youth development programs. The framework advances a paradigm that views young people as active co-constructors of technological culture, reframes youth development professionals as designers of transformative learning environments, and reconceptualizes youth facilities as innovation-oriented learning spaces that foster self-directed and sustained engagement in science and technology.

Vol.20 No.4
In the life cycle, adolescence is the period when people experience significant biological, psychological and social changes. At the same time, adolescents are required to follow strict social norms and rules at within school, the home, and other social contexts. Thus, many adolescents encounter a great deal of internal and external tension and conflict, and some become engaged in anti-social behaviors under certain environmental conditions. This study explored how various communication and sport-related factors influence early adolescents’ violent or non-violent deviancies. The analysis of the first-year data from the Korea Youth Panel Survey conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute since 2003, suggested the following findings. First, among various communication factors, variables of interpersonal communication appeared to be significant in explaining early adolescents’ problematic behavior. Specifically, interactions with at-risk peers functioned as a significant risk factor for both violent and non-violent behavior. On the contrary, parental communication functioned as a protective factor; how openly the youth talked with their parents and how positively they evaluated those interactions significantly influenced the likelihood of anti-social behavior. Secondly, uses of digital media, such as the Internet and mobile telephone, positively contributed to such non-violent deviancies as drinking, smoking, absenteeism, and running away from home. Thirdly, the overall impact of sport-related activities was not so significant. However, participating in organized forms of sport-mediated youth programs appeared to increase violent anti-social behavior, disconfirming previous theoretical expectations.
Vol.36 No.4
This study investigated interpersonal influence of parents and friends as potential mediating variables in the relationship between types of smartphone use (i.e., information, entertainment, and communication) and environmental behavior among adolescents. Using the panel data from the National Youth Policy Institute (i.e., the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey of 2018), the findings indicated that the changes of adolescents’ informational use using smartphones increased changes in face-to-face time spent talking to their parents, while using smartphones for entertainment was negatively related to changes in face-to-face discussion with their parents. Neither changes of information nor entertainment use through smartphones were statistically significant with changes in the amount of time teens spent with their friends face to face. In addition, the results demonstrated that the changes of teens’ communication with friends using smartphones increased changes in face-to-face time with their friends, while changes of adolescents’ communication with family increased changes of face-to-face time discussing with their parents. In addition, the results indicated that changes in face-to-face time with friends was not statistically related to changes in teens’ environmental behavior, while face-to-face time discussing with parents was positively associated with changes in their environmental behavior. Finally, the findings showed that interpersonal communication, especially adolescents’ face-to-face time interacting with parents mediated the relationship between types of smartphone use and teens’ environmental behavior. Implications and suggestions that are drawn from the current study are also discussed.
Vol.32 No.3
This study examines the factors influencing single and repeated victimization in adolescent digital sexual crimes through the framework of Opportunity Theory, evaluating its applicability in digital environments. Using survey data from 2,837 middle and high school students collected as part of the 2021 study, Status and Countermeasures for Digital Sexual Crimes Targeting Children and Adolescents, conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute, key variables such as exposure, proximity, attractiveness, and guardianship were identified. Respondents were categorized into three groups: non-victimization, single victimization, and repeated victimization. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted to explore the relationships among these variables across the three groups. The findings reveal that the single-victimization group, compared to the no-victimization group, differed significantly only in attractiveness (offline meetings), suggesting that single victimization may stem from temporary vulnerabilities exploited by offenders. In contrast, the repeated-victimization group was significantly influenced by gender, school type, exposure (anonymous account use), proximity (one-on-one conversations), attractiveness (offline meetings), and guardianship (parental support). Additionally, a comparison between the single and repeated victimization groups indicated that parental support was associated with a lower likelihood of repeated victimization. This study underscores the importance of adapting Opportunity Theory to account for the unique characteristics of digital environments. It also provides practical strategies and policy recommendations to enhance protective measures for youth against digital sexual crimes.
Vol.16 No.4
This study aimed to design a youth activity program for digital literacy and examine its effectiveness. After obtaining approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB), this study conducted a program with 30 youths aged 11–14 years, who were divided into the experimental group (15 participants) and control group (15 participants). The program comprised 14 sessions and lasted eight weeks. Pre- and post-survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Mann–Whitney U test, and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results revealed that the program significantly increased the participants’ digital literacy. Significant improvements were observed in digital information, data utilization, and digital content creation and expression. These findings indicate that youth activity programs focusing on participation effectively promote digital literacy. Consequently, this study recommends designing participatory programs that reflect youths’ interests and needs, establishing a foundation for collaborative growth among youth workers, conducting comprehensive analyses of factors affecting digital literacy, and developing policies to facilitate the dissemination and sustainable implementation of digital literacy programs.
Vol.33 No.3
This study examines the factors influencing adolescents’ vulnerability to digital sexual crime victimization based on the Lifestyle–Routine Activities Theory (LRAT). Using survey data from 2,822 middle and high school students nationwide, the effects of exposure, lifestyle, lack of guardianship, and target suitability on victimization were analyzed through logistic regression. The results show that frequent use of anonymous accounts increases the likelihood of victimization, and one-on-one interactions with strangers online emerged as the strongest predictive factor. In addition, the absence of conversations or education about digital sexual crimes within the family was associated with higher victimization risk. In contrast, the exposure variable measured by open-chat participation frequency did not exhibit a significant effect. These findings indicate that adolescents’ online behavioral patterns, the nature of their interactions, and the presence of protective factors within the home are key determinants of vulnerability to digital sexual crimes. This study contributes to the field by applying LRAT to the digital crime context and providing empirical evidence on how online risk behaviors operate, offering meaningful insights for prevention education and policy development targeting adolescents.
