This paper is to review researches on drifting in the seas of East Asia in the Premodern, and examine future challenges about it. With the beginning of the 21st century, there has been increasing interest in ‘islands and seas’. The reason for it seems to be the excavation of new sources on drifting. For example, Muncheonggi (「問情記」), ecord of questionings by officials of Bibyeonsa (備邊司) to foreigners who were washed up on the Korean peninsula, Pyoherok (『漂海錄』), book on drifting experience of a Korean, Pyoryugi (「漂流記」), compilation of extractions from personal writings and diaries are among them. Another recent development on research on drifting is that, as researchers in East Asia have presented papers on drifting based on sources stored in their countries, the scope of research has been expanded. In the future, it is necessary to make a total list of all the writings and records on drifting stored in East Asian countries. At the same time, related materials should be declassified, which is necessary in order to compare drifting processes and repatriation itineraries of drifters in the seas of East Asia. It will correct errors in existing drifting records, and, above all, serve to reconstruct marine activities of drifters in East Asian countries. In addition, it is the most urgent to continue to excavate the first sources on drifting and build a system comprehensively operating them.
