Vol.32 No.-

In the final year of Emperor Kangxi’s reign (1662-1722), during the spring, Prince Yong, who would later ascend to the throne as Emperor Yongzheng (r. 1723-1735), invited his father to a banquet at the Peony Terrace (Mudantai) within the Garden of Perfect Brightness (Yuanmingyuan). The gathering aimed to view the blooming of peonies. During this event, 12-year-old Hongli, who would later become Emperor Qianlong (r. 1736-1795), captured the attention of his grandfather, Kangxi, through his intellect, ultimately leading to his father’s succession to the throne. Notably, documentation of this event was recorded by Qianlong after his ascension to the throne. Qianlong strategically constructed a political narrative emphasizing that his succession had already been promised by his father and grandfather during his youth, thereby legitimizing his own rise to power. This paper will focus on the examination of paintings commissioned by Qianlong, which depict auspicious peony blossoms grown at the Terrace. By doing so, it explores how Qianlong made his destiny as emperor inevitable, and how the symbolism of the auspicious peony blossoms in the paintings contributed to this political narrative.

Vol.25 No.-

The Qing Emperor Qianlong (r. 1736-1795) collected and appreciated ancient Chinese paintings and antiques with great enthusiasm. He not only appreciated and appraised the value of his collection, but also created new works of art by rearranging paintings and antiques for his purposes. Duobaoge or “manytreasures boxes (curiosity cabinets)” is the best example of his practice of re-interpreting the antiques and curios in the Qing imperial collections. This paper examines various features of duobaoge and the representation of his collection including duobaoge in court paintings. According to the Archives of the Office of Manufacture of the Imperial Household Department in Yangxindian, Qianlong established the Department of Hundred Things to produce duobaoge in 1756. He maintained it until 1767. It explains his special interest in the making and use of duobaoge and their popularity during his reign. Qinalong’s duobaoge can be largely divided into box types and furniture types. The box type-duobaoge often has its own catalogue of the contents. The arrangement of the antiques in the furniture type-duobaoge was also thoroughly documented in the Archives of Arrangement of each palace building. The fact that these duobaoge have their own cataloging system shows that duobaoge, in themselves, are independent works of art rather than mere assemblies of precious things in his collection. Furniture type-duobaoge were installed in various palace buildings. The duobaoge in Shufangzhai is one of the well-known existing examples. In Shufangzhai, Qianlong held tea ceremonies and enjoyed theatricalperformances with his courtiers and Hanlin scholars on the first day of the year. Qianlong used Shufangzhai as a place to receive foreign envoys after his retirement. Shufangzhai was known as one of Qianlong’s private residences. But its official function mentioned above suggests that his collection of antiques in duobaoge was not only objects of his private appreciation but also a symbol of authority working for his political purposes. Qinglong commissioned court painters to paint in the realistic pictorial manner antiques and collectibles in duobaoge such as mirrors, bronzes, jades, ceramics, ink stones, and other curios. The paintings are visual catalogues of his collection of precious things. The presentation and housing of works of art in the imperial collections in duobaoge were art forms in themselves. His collection of antiques and curios was also found in the portraits of Qianlong such as Qianlong as Connoisseur and Is It One or Two? Theses portraits of Qianlong are considered to be pictorial versions of duobaoge, in the sense that cultural and historical values attached to his collection of precious things and antiques are carefully rearranged to establish the image of Qianlong’s emperorship.

Vol.84 No.-

Vol.76 No.-

This paper will examine the preface to the Manchu Buddhist Canonü to determine the circumstances under which the sutra was written.üThis paper has two major goals. The first is to establish the reason the Manchu Buddhist Canonü was compiled.üThe second goal is to determine theü Qianlong emperor’s view on Buddhism. The Manchu Buddhist Canon was compiled in the Qing Dynasty in 1790. It was composed of sūtras and vinayas. Compilers of the Manchu Buddhist Canon consulted the Chinese, Tibetan and Mongolian tripitakas. It was compiled in compliance to an order the Qianlong emperor issued in 1773. It was a huge project. The superintendent-general at that time was Changja Qutuɼtu. Compiling the Manchu version of the Buddhist Canon lasted from 1773 to 1790. The Qianlong emperor then wrote the preface to it on February 1, 1790. The subject matter of this paper is based on his preface. The preface was written in four languages: Manchu, Chinese, Mongolian and Tibetan. Their content is almost identical, but they differ in length due to linguistic characteristics. I think the Qianlong emperor was quite familiar with Buddhism and knew how to govern and rule such a large country whose population was comprised of four different races. By the late 18th century, many Manchu people rarely spoke their own language, preferring Mandarin Chinese. I believe he had the sutra translated into Manchu for the purpose of reinforcing the identity of the Manchu people.

Vol.112 No.-

In 1780, to commemorate his seventieth birthday, Emperor Qianlong invited Joseon envoys to Rehe and received them with exceptional honor. Two years later, in 1782, he further permitted their participation in the Outer Vassal Banquet held in Beijing, thereby enhancing the diplomatic ties between Qing and Joseon. However, such cordial treatment marked a sharp departure from the reception Joseon envoys had experienced during the earlier and middle years of Qianlong’s reign. Under King Yeongjo, Joseon envoys were typically allowed to meet the emperor only during the New Year’s Day audience and, on rare occasions, during the accompanying banquet. Even special envoys (byeolsa 別使), including those of royal lineage, found it difficult to gain an audience with the emperor due to Qianlong’s suspension of formal imperial summons (sogyeon 召見)—a practice that stood in stark contrast to the more frequent audiences held during the reign of Emperor Yongzheng. Following his accession, Qianlong gradually curtailed imperial summons not only for Joseon envoys but also for those from other tributary states. Instead, these envoys were permitted to meet the emperor by participating in domestic Qing rituals such as the New Year’s Day ceremonies, Zhiying (a ritual of receiving the emperor), or regular court audiences. This shift reflected Qianlong’s strategic focus on consolidating stability along Qing’s northwestern frontiers, particularly in managing relations with the Western Mongols and Central Asian polities. The relative neglect of Joseon and other tributary envoys during this time thus stemmed from diplomatic priorities rather than personal indifference. Notably, the preferential treatment accorded to Munansa envoys dispatched to Shenyang during Qianlong’s eastern tours suggests that Qing–Joseon relations in this period were more actively cultivated in Shenyang than in Beijing. Beginning in the 1770s, Qianlong began to expand his interactions with tributary envoys. After King Jeongjo's accession, Joseon envoys increasingly participated in Zhiying ceremonies, thereby gaining greater access to the emperor. This development can be interpreted as the convergence of Jeongjo’s proactive policy of serving the Qing and Qianlong’s efforts to strengthen ties with tributary states. During this period, even non-royal special envoys from Joseon were granted audiences with the emperor- a significant shift that signaled the gradual dissolution of Qing’s earlier policy of privileging only royal-lineage envoys, not only in Shenyang but also in Beijing.

Vol.68 No.-

The Qing China Emperor Qianlong ruled was a multiracial nation. The matter of how to integrate harmoniously many ethnic groups with different languages and cultures into one was a very prominent question in the mind of Emperor Qianlong who had to govern a multiracial nation as a Manchu ruler. There were many cultural phenomenon which visualized his effort to construct “harmonious China” by means of integrating many racial minorities into one. Emperor Qianlong’s construction of the Garden of Eternal Spring can be understood in the same vein. Most of buildings constructed in the Garden of Eternal Spring were the replications of captivating and beautiful gardens in the region of Jiangnan Emperor Qianlong saw during his southern tours. Emperor Qianlong toured many famous gardens in the region of Jiangnan. Emperor Qianlong accompanied by artisans and painters during his southern tours and made them to reproduce gardens he liked in the Garden of Eternal Spring. He also built Western Multistoried Buildings by the help of Jesuits. The Garden of Eternal Spring was a microcosm of vast Qing Empire he ruled. The Garden of Eternal Spring was a miniature garden representing the world under heaven. The famous gardens in the region of Jiangnan which were reproduced in the Garden of Eternal Spring would be taken as cultural symbols representing the region of Jiangnan within the sphere of his influence. Ruler can announce his control of the regions by means of collecting cultural symbols representing regions of the world under his influence and assembling them on the center.

Percival David

Vol.- No.30

It is known that about 70 pieces of Ru wares have been passed down today. They are so-called surviving Ru wares. How did they become recognized as Ru wares? Furthermore, are they true Ru wares? In the early 20thcentury when the researches on Ru ware began to be systemically carried out, Qingbai (or Yingqing) ware was recognized as Ru type ware or so-called Northen Celadon known was recognized as Ru ware. Such a misunderstanding was a byproduct of the period when researchers were almost blocked from practical resources of Ru ware, in other words, the dark ages of the research on Ru ware. It is thought to be Guobaochang who built the foundation to recognize the known Tianqing ware as Ru ware today. He discovered what kind of potteries were identified as Ru ware by Emperor Qianlong after finding and comparing the poems written on the specific pottery in The Collection of Emperor Qianlong’s Poems(御製詩集). Based on the ground, he recognized the type of potteries known as surviving Ru ware as Ru ware. Such recognition was organized by Percival David. Most researchers believe that it is an indisputable truth that the materials known as surviving Ru ware refer to Ru ware after the Qingliangsi Ru kiln site(淸凉寺汝窯址) was excavated. However, they are not necessarily guarantee that all of the materials known as surviving Ru ware are all truely Ru ware. Given the analysis on the poems by Emperor Qianlong and other literature, it is thought that the materials include Ru wares as well as Northern Guan wares and imitated Ru wares in the next generations.

Most researchers believe that it is an indisputable truth that the materials known as surviving Ru ware refer to Ru ware after the Qingliangsi Ru kiln

Vol.121 No.-

In this study I have analyzed the process of the persecution on the missions occurred in Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei, Shanxi, Shandong, Jiangxi, Gansu, Sichuan, Henan, Hebei, Fujian during the years 1784-1786 by Qing dynasty and also have analyzed the role of emperor Qianlong in that process. This persecution have begun with the arrest of four Franciscan missionaries travelling to their assigned missions in Shanxi. About the middle of September 1784, Huguang governor-general Techenge received the report from Xiangyang county of the capture of the four missionaries. Emperor Qianlong was immediately reported this incident and issued an edict that govern and governor-generals of all provinces arrest missionaries and Chinese Catholic. Eighteen missionaries and about four hundred Chinese Catholic was arrested and interrogated by Qing bureaucrat. Some of Chinese Catholic were died in the prison, the others were tried in the court and sentenced to be exiled to Xinjiang or flogged. Six missionaries were died in prison and nine missionaries were banished to their own countries and three missionaries were allowed to reside at Catholic Church in Beijing in order to serve emperor Qianlong. This incident was called the great persecution of 18th century China. With the help of chief minister Agui and Hesen, emperor Qianlong took lead all the process of the great persecution. On the surface the persecution was proceeded by judicial procedure of Qing dynasty, Actually the procedure was decided by emperor Qianlong’s will. The reason was that according to the Qing judicial system, emperor issues some order, it became edict which takes legal force at once. As emperor Qianlong dealt with the persecution a little mildly, he could not only show off his tolerance as emperor, but also he could control missionaries and Chinese Catholic.

Vol.68 No.-

In recent years, not a few scholars in the field of international relations have argued that the tribute system of the Qing empire made possible the prolonged peace of early modern East Asia, and attempted to find a model for the future of international relations in the Qing precedent. However, other scholars, pointing to the historical fact that the Qing empire was built not by peaceful means but by a series of military conquests from the early 1580s to the late 1750s, have persuasively refuted that argument. Therefore, it is superfluous to add here one more rebuttal. Focusing upon the New Year celebrations in the Qing court among other politico-ritual activities in Beijing, this article explores when and how the Qing empire diluted and substituted the historical momory of its violent expasions for an image of the benevolent master of the grand peace and prosperity under its hegemony. In the Manchu cultural tradition, the New Year s Day was the most important day in the year. Well before its conquest of China, the Manchu court established state rituals celebrating the New Year along with Mongol princes and nobles, its political and military allies. Having moved its capital from Mukden to Beijing, the Qing court made it a tributary duty for all the Mongol princes to pay personal visits to Beijing on a rotational basis and attend the New Year celebrations. The Qianlong emperor, who completed the historical process of Qing imperial expansion, inherited from his predecessors the tradition of the New Year celebrations and made further developments. Under his rule, the New Year celebrations were characterized by three guest banquets presided by the emperor himself. The first imperial banquet was held on the Eve of the New Year s Day, the second on one of the first days of the New Year, and the third on the fifteenth day of the New Year. The invitees to the imperial banquets were basically restricted to the nomadic princes and nobles. There was, however, an exception: the second banquet, the venue of which was usually the Ziguangge 紫光閣, included among its invitees the Muslim beg 伯克 officials from East Turkistan and the Tibetan tusi 土司 chieftains from western Sichuan. In the early 1780s, Qianlong introduced a significant change to the New Year celebrations by widening access to the imperial banquets. He began to invite the envoys from foreign rulers such as the king of Chosŏn to all of the three major banquets as well as other diverse court entertainments. Along with foreign envoys, Muslim beg officials and Tibetan tusi chieftains were also invited tobefore. Qianlong continued these acts of special favors upon new invitees into a new court convention by repeating them annually. His successors also abided by Qianlong s new convention. It was none other than Qianlong himself that initiated this kind of institutional innovation. Qianlong s initiative was designed not only to boast and commemorate his own lifetime achievement of the imperial prosperity and grand peace, but also to construct and/or reinforce his image of the benevolent Son of Heaven who ‘cherishes men from afar’ and ‘bestows equal favors on all.’ It cannot be attributed to a simple coincidence that the decades of late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries witnessed more and more Chosŏn literati changing their attitude toward the Qing dynasty and even recognizing its legitimacy. And in a historical sense, the aforemetioned false and misleading arguments of some scholars in the field of international relations may be considered an unintended consequences of Qianlong s politico-diplomatic project.
