A.I, Artificial Intelligence, is a technology that mimics human behavior and intelligence through learning ability and understanding ability. It executes sentence understanding, image recognition, voice recognition, and learning instead, etc. Humans can accept various sensory signals such as visual, auditory, and tactile senses through the body and perception ability with creative thinking. In contrast, artificial intelligence cannot perceive through the body, but it voluntarily forms a sensory perception system through deep learning and generates images. Among the many technologies leading the fourth industrial revolution, artificial intelligence is considered one of the most innovative technologies and is actively used in various fields. In graphic visual communication, the artworks created by collaboration through human and artificial intelligence will become more active. The thesis explores new graphical expressions through AI and human interaction. The significance of this study is that the scope of creative activities is broadened if viewed as a means of interacting with the capabilities of human and artificial intelligence rather than forming a confrontation structure between human and artificial intelligence. The combination of human creative thinking and Big Data-based image generation capabilities can potentially explosively expand the graphic representation domain. Designers can visualize various topics they want to express using multiple creative techniques and functions of artificial intelligence.
Contemporary Korean society, driven by a competition-centered educational paradigm, has internalized fascist tendencies within its social structure and cultural foundations. This dynamic ultimately obstructs individuals from reaching their authentic “Self”, leaving them confined within multiple "Persona" and trapped in unstable “Ego” states, resulting in psychogenic phenomena of self-loss. As a member of this society, the researcher also experienced unstable self-loss and identified resultant mental health issues induced by an environment that enforces a binary demand for continuous success or failure. As a resolution, the necessity of true “Self-realization” was recognized. Consequently, practical methods wereexplored for inward investigation and integration to cultivate a resilient self. This study focuses on Carl G. Jung’s analytical psychology, especially the core concept of self-realization known as Individuation. Based on this theoretical foundation, the researcher constructed the structure of “autobiographical individuation” through an autobiographical narrative and investigated design methodologies utilizing various visual elements. All layers of this plural-mode work converge in the production of artworks, culminating in an attempt to concretize self-realization. Firstly, a “psychological distance stage” was composed based on the researcher’s diverse relational experiences. This was linked with the “color symbolic system” and associations, deriving initially twelve colors corresponding to the psychological distance stages. In this way, an “autobiographical color system was established, simultaneously representing stages of psychological distance and color system progression. Within the designed structure, symbols corresponding to each of the twelve colors were arranged, and “autobiographical essays” were written to explain the symbolic rationale. Secondly, each color was expanded into three tones to form a total of thirsty-six color system stages. In accordance with psychological distance, the researcher conceptualized and systematized everyday objects, experiences, or ideas into a table. As in the earlier phase, narratives continued with an essay for each list item detailing concept and symbolism. Lastly, integrating this structured work, two major outputs were produced: 1) thirty-six Symbol Cards, and 2) a Record Book documenting the entire process, including essays. Additional derivative graphic works and additional card types were also designed. Moreover, narrative framing–a dimension reinforcing diverse design touchpoints–was given considerable weight as a mediating factor unifying the study’s aims and direction. The researcher’s daily life was envisioned as a cosmos in which the practical actor, Nephila pilipes(Giant Golden Orb-Weaving Spider), measured surrounding entities–analogous to "planets"–by psychological distance. This storytelling served as an emotional-persuasion mechanism for the audience, particularly within the Symbol Cards’ illustrations. “Autobiographical individuation” thus represents an attempt to stably reach the true Self within this cosmos, and the entire set of individuative acts–color system, psychological distance concept system, essays–was named KʌmKʌm Distance: Diastar. This title encapsulated the totality of the symbolic manifestation rooted in autobiographical elements. Meanwhile, within the autobiographical color system, black symbolizes the stage of measurement–completion and the Self–while white symbolizes the unmeasured stage–imperfection and chaos. The randomly existing surrounding “planets” in and out of the cosmos become stably established within the cosmos by measuring their intra-relational psychological distance, forming a component of reaching a healthy Self. This study’s significance lies not only in creating a visualized work of personal autobiographical individuation but also in generating in the field of visual design a set of Symbol Cards and Record Book that incorporate narrative, color symbol system, and diverse design elements. Furthermore, based on this endeavor, it proposed a multilayered design methodology for the growth of a vulnerable ego, as experienced by modern individuals who have undergone self-loss. It is hoped that this will serve as a catalyst for personal healing and recovery, potentially extending to societal restoration as well.
Recently, the popularity of keyrings has resurged in the merchandise market. This trend is driven by the rise of "kidult culture" and the "Y2K" movement, as keyrings that were popular in the 2000s are now being reinterpreted with a modern sensibility, drawing attention from younger generations. The use of keyrings by popular celebrities and brand collaborations has further accelerated this trend. Keyrings have evolved beyond simple decorative items to become fashion accessories with added functionalities, attracting consumer interest. According to an analysis based on Google Trends, the search volume for keyrings has steadily increased in recent years, indicating that keyrings are now recognized as symbolic elements of individual identity and cultural trends, rather than mere accessories. This study extends existing research on merchandise by identifying specific fun elements inherent in character keyrings. It analyzes modern consumers' emotional consumption patterns and explores purchase intention based on four fun elements and attachment. The fun elements of character plush keyrings were derived through prior studies on animation and merchandise, and categorized into sensory, cognitive, psychological, and functional dimensions. The study then examines how these elements influence purchase intention through the mediating role of attachment. In the empirical study, the independent variable was the fun elements of character plush keyrings, the dependent variable was purchase intention, and the mediating variable was attachment. Experimental stimuli were selected based on the 2022–2024 Character Industry White Paper published by the Korea Creative Content Agency, using character preference survey results. A total of ten character-based plush keyrings were selected, and the survey was conducted with 300 adults aged 20 to 40. The findings are as follows:First, all four fun elements of character plush keyrings showed a significant positive correlation with attachment.Second, the fun elements also showed a significant positive correlation with purchase intention.Third, attachment was found to mediate the relationship between the fun elements and purchase intention positively. In conclusion, the sensory, cognitive, psychological, and functional fun elements of character plush keyrings positively influence purchase intention through the mediating role of attachment. Research on character plush keyrings contributes to understanding contemporary consumer behavior and exploring the potential for market development. Furthermore, this study confirms that even the functional aspects of character keyrings positively influence purchase intention. These findings offer a new perspective for analyzing consumer trends and product popularity, highlighting the academic significance of the study. This research is expected to contribute to identifying future directions for the development of the character keyring market and related studies.
Today, universities are increasingly expected to function not only as educational institutions but also as psychological and social communities in which members can form a sense of identity and emotional belonging. However, traditional university branding strategies have focused primarily on visual identity elements such as logos, official colors, and slogans, often failing to adequately reflect the emotions and lived experiences of members. In particular, the graduate school environment—centered on individualized work—tends to limit opportunities for shared community engagement and connection. This study, grounded in the belief that “a brand is not something given, but something created together,” explores the potential of emotion-based participatory communication design as a means to foster internal connectedness and collective identity within a university. To this end, a series of design experiments was conducted involving 50 graduate students in the Visual Communication Design program at Hongik University. These included a participatory logo workshop, a modular stamp-making experience, and interactive exhibition-based engagements. Participants created their own logos using handwritten typography, keywords, and shapes, which were then expanded into a customizable modular system. The project yielded three main outcomes. First, the participatory workbook archive served as a visual record of 50 unique logos and texts that reflected each student’s emotions and identity. Second, the modular logo stamp system was designed as a practical tool that encouraged repeated user engagement through free combination of visual elements. Third, the motion logo visualized the concept of a non-fixed brand identity by sequencing the dynamic transformation of diverse logo forms. The results demonstrate that participatory design, when grounded in users’ emotional experiences, can allow university branding to function not merely as a collection of visual elements but as a medium for emotional bonding and community building. This suggests that an internally driven, emotion-based branding strategy offers meaningful potential for redefining university communication design practices.
In modern society, death is gradually being erased from everyday experiences as it is pushed into institutional spaces such as hospitals and funeral facilities. Death is over-exposed as a scene in news images or media, but it remains difficult to face in person's life. This study grasps this death exterior not as a simple socio-cultural phenomenon but as a matter of the gaze structure of "who is looking at whom". In particular, based on Lacan's concept of gaze, death is not an event outside of life, but rather as an 'invisible gaze' that has already penetrated the subject from behind. At the theoretical level, the study summarizes how the subject is easily reduced from the position of the "viewer" to the "small visible object", focusing on Lacan's concept of imagination, punishment, reality, mirror stage, gaze and object a. Based on this, it interprets gaze by linking it with the structure of deficiency and anxiety, and the cause of desire, and reads death as "the place of gaze that is always aimed at me," not "the object that I look at." As a prior study, the work of Andy Warhol, Christian Boltzky, Nan Goldin, and Francis Bacon examines how repeated printing, facial archive, autobiographical photography series, and distorted bodies reveal laconic staring structures. At the practical level, the researcher uses the autobiographical recording through a camera as a key methodology, taking his own mental crisis and the experience of collapsing the continuity of life as a starting point. The recording behavior of the camera is understood as the practice of the subject shaking in front of the gaze of death to hold and arrange fragments of his life, and this is embodied as two installation works, 'gaze' and 'invisible gaze'. In 'gaze', photographs taken on the path leading to Japan-Hongdae-Exhibition Space-Japan-Ujiro-Hoseong are composed of black and white collages, and the gaze of "I see the world" is placed in front, and the self-portraits of the ages 1–28, redrawn in the child-like painting style, are added at the top and bottom to reveal the instability of self-image. In 'Invisible Gaze', photos and paintings aged 1–28, are juxtaposed with canvases of different sizes, forming a structure in which "the visible me" and "the invisible me" deviate from each other under the gaze of death. As a result of the study, it was revealed that the death gaze can be understood as a structure that rearranges the direction of the gaze and the position of the subject beyond the subject dimension dealing with a specific subject. Based on Lacan's gaze theory, this study proposes a method of positioning death as an active gaze subject and visualizing the collision between the 'view gaze' and the 'invisible gaze' through autobiographical photo archives and installation formats. This is meaningful in that it understands the visualization of death as a device that shakes the viewer's perception and self-awareness rather than just image representation, and presents a new theoretical and formal framework dealing with death in visual design and visual art.
This study attempts to explore from various angles how Generative AI technology affects the overall activity system of the brand design process. While the existing research focused on the efficiency, creativity, or results of Generative AI, this study attempted to analyze how Generative AI technology caused changes in brand designer perceptions and structural changes in the overall activity system with Engeström's activity theory as an analysis framework. The design of the study adopted an exploratory sequential mixed design that was combined with quantitative analysis based on qualitative research. In the qualitative study, through semi-structured in-depth interviews with 8 brand designers who are applying Generative AI in practice, the changes in the seven elements of the activity system (subject, tool, object, rule, community, division of labor, and result) were analyzed. Based on this, through questionnaire items of quantitative research, the changes in perception before and after AI introduction were numerically compared with 100 designers. The changes observed in qualitative analysis were not limited to changes in individual elements, but five integrated readjustments could be arranged through relationships between elements. First, the work of adjusting the AI-generated output to fit the brand context increased, and the efficiency of idea search increased, but the burden of adjusting and judging the result also increased. In addition, as the boundaries between learning data, copyrights, and sources blurred, the need to re-establish norms and ethical standards was required, and the form of collaboration and division of labor was readjusted differently depending on the size of the organization's shape project. Finally, designers transformed their roles from simple producers to directors who make strategic decisions. The analysis results of quantitative studies also confirmed a similar appearance. As a result of comparing before and after the introduction of AI, a statistically significant numerical increase in the level of awareness of designers was confirmed throughout the activity system, and in particular, large changes in the items of tools, division of labor, rules, and community elements supported the results of qualitative research presented above. Taken together, Generative AI is not just a productivity tool, but affects the entire activity system and creates tensions that reconstruct the existing work process, role classification, and collaboration methods. This study explains these changes as a process of coordinating and expanding the social and cultural practice structure throughout brand design, and aims to provide theoretical and empirical grounds for changes in designers' perceptions through qualitative and quantitative integrated analysis.
With the recent proliferation of social media services and their integration into everyday life, social media characters have evolved beyond simple visual content into digital content that elicits user responses and participation while expanding the potential for forming emotional relationships. In particular, Generation Z—digital natives—actively express their identity and tastes through social media, and characters likewise function not merely as objects of consumption but as media for self-expression. Within this trend, social media characters elicit user participation and form emotional bonds through participation-inducing content optimized for mobile environments, such as question- and poll-type content, short-form videos, and memes. In particular, social media character content actively employs question-type and response-inducing messages—such as "What about you?"—to ask about users' opinions and experiences and to encourage participation. Accordingly, this study moves beyond the attribute-centered perspective that has predominantly addressed character traits such as attractiveness and familiarity, reconceptualizing the characteristics of social media characters and focusing on interactivity as a core characteristic. pecifically, among various means of inducing interaction, this study focuses on the message as a linguistic design element of content, and systematizes types of interaction-inducing message design through a review of prior research and case analyses of social media content. On this basis, viewing the message as a linguistic content design element distinct from visual elements, this study sought to verify how interaction-inducing messages affect perceived interactivity, and whether a psychological pathway exists in which this leads—via self-expression intention—to an attachment reaction toward the social media character. This study conducted a survey of 222 members of Generation Z born between 1995 and 2006. In addition, based on the types of interaction-inducing messages derived from case analysis, an experimental study was conducted using stimuli representing low and high interaction-inducing conditions. These experimental stimuli were constructed using a fictional social media character, "Gomgomi." To assess the appropriateness of the stimuli, a preliminary survey and manipulation check were used to verify whether the difference in message level was perceived in the intended manner. The findings are as follows. First, the higher the level of the interaction-inducing message in social media character content, the higher the perceived interactivity. Second, the perceived interactivity of the social media character had a positive effect on Generation Z's self-expression intention. In particular, interaction-inducing messages substantially enhanced the perceived personalization dimension, whereas the perceived control dimension had a relatively greater effect on self-expression intention. This suggests that the sub-dimensions of interactivity do not operate identically but perform distinct psychological roles. Third, Generation Z's self-expression intention was confirmed to have a positive effect on the attachment reaction toward the social media character. Fourth, self-expression intention was found to mediate the relationship between the perceived interactivity of social media character content and the attachment reaction. Moreover, this mediating effect was maintained even after controlling for first-impression attractiveness and the overall impression of the social media character. Furthermore, messages including question-type messages, response-inducing messages, and participation requests led users to perceive the possibility of personalized communication, demonstrating that personalized interactivity can be formed through linguistic expression alone. This study is significant in that it extends prior research on interactivity in brand-centered experiences into the context of social media character content, empirically verifying how the interaction-inducing experience of social media characters relates to Generation Z's self-expression intention and attachment reaction. In particular, it extends social media character research from an attribute-centered perspective to a user-relationship perspective, confirming that the attachment reaction may be associated not only with surface-level attributes or favorability but also with the psychological pathway of self-expression intention. In addition, because perceived interactivity differed based on the message alone while the character's visual identity was held constant, the study confirms that linguistic expression such as a message can function as a content design element that influences perceived interactivity distinctly from visual elements. Practically, the study suggests that, in planning social media character content, communication strategies that elicit user participation and response are more important than the mere delivery of information. In particular, it confirms that linguistic expression alone—such as question-type messages—can strengthen users' perceived interactivity, and is expected to contribute to setting future directions for planning and operating social media character content.
With the global emphasis on sustainability and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management, the cosmetic industry has increasingly recognized eco-friendly packaging design as a key competitive factor. This study aims to empirically examine the effect of consumers’ perceptions of eco-friendly packaging design on their purchase intention, focusing on the mediating role of brand authenticity and the moderating role of consumers’ environmental consciousness. The research also seeks to provide foundational insights for establishing differentiated ESG-based marketing strategies. To achieve this, products from cosmetic brands that actually utilize eco-friendly packaging materials were selected. A face-to-face survey was conducted with 354 female consumers aged 20 to 49 in the commercial districts of Gangdong-gu, Seoul. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 28.0 and PROCESS Macro (Models 1 and 4) to test the proposed hypotheses. The findings are as follows. First, the detailed components of eco-friendly packaging design—graphics, materials, and structural awareness—were all found to have a significant positive impact on brand authenticity. That is, the packaging's visual message, the eco-friendliness of the materials, structural convenience, and recyclability served as key factors reinforcing brand authenticity. Second, among the sub-factors of brand authenticity, "Quality Commitment" and "Tradition" had a significant positive impact on purchase intention, while "Trustworthiness" did not show a direct effect. This suggests that even if consumers perceive a brand's authenticity or trustworthiness, it may not immediately lead to purchase behavior. Third, brand authenticity was found to mediate the relationship between eco-friendly packaging design evaluation and purchase intention. In other words, when consumers perceive the eco-friendliness of the packaging design and believe that the brand is genuinely fulfilling its environmental responsibilities, their intention to purchase the brand's products increases. Fourth, consumers' environmental awareness level moderated the relationship between eco-friendly packaging design and purchase intention. Interestingly, the lower the environmental awareness, the stronger the effect of positive evaluations of packaging design on purchase intention. As a result of in-depth interviews conducted to explore these paradoxical results (5 people, semi-structured method), consumers with low eco-consciousness focused on sensory satisfaction factors such as the aesthetics, touch, and ease of use of packaging rather than environmental values, and through this, they tended to form a sense of psychological stability and a positive brand image. Therefore, it is interpreted that their positive responses are due to the effects of aesthetic and emotional satisfaction and social trend coordination rather than environmental ethical consciousness. This study is meaningful in clarifying that eco-friendly packaging design influences consumer behavior through brand authenticity in the cosmetics industry. This means that packaging design goes beyond simply protecting products and functions as a symbolic communication medium that conveys a company's environmental responsibility and philosophy to consumers. In addition, this study suggested the need for differentiated marketing strategies according to the level of eco-consciousness of consumers. Sensory packaging strategies emphasizing aesthetics and convenience are effective for consumers with low environmental consciousness, and on the contrary, consumers with high environmental consciousness are required to clearly present practical environmental management activities such as ESG information disclosure, supply chain transparency, and carbon reduction performance. Therefore, companies should move beyond the physical implementation of eco-friendly packaging and focus on strengthening brand authenticity and segmenting consumer value orientations to build sustainable, ESG-driven brands.
This practice-based study originates from the researcher’s recurring experiences of nightmares and explores how these experiences are connected to the inner psychological state, ultimately examining ways to visually reconstruct them. Dreams are psychological and sensory phenomena that naturally arise from the human psyche and possess a unique structure that transforms unconscious content into audiovisual imagery. In particular, nightmares evoke intense negative emotions and symbolically manifest repressed desires, anxieties, and internal conflicts. This study approaches nightmares not merely as frightening experiences, but as mechanisms that may enhance one's coping ability in real-life fear-inducing situations. It investigates how nightmares function as a means of releasing real-life stress and negative emotions and how such experiences can be transformed into a positive force for everyday life. Furthermore, it analyzes the process of translating nightmare content into a visual art form. The conceptual framework of the creative work draws on Sigmund Freud’s theory of “dream-work” and Carl Gustav Jung’s notions of symbols and archetypes. Freud’s model, including mechanisms such as condensation, displacement, secondary revision, and symbolism, along with his topographical model of the psyche (conscious–preconscious–unconscious), is used to theorize how repressed desires are transformed into symbolic dream images. Jung, on the other hand, interprets dreams as symbolic expressions of the collective unconscious and a path toward individuation. These theories are not applied as analytical tools but serve as conceptual reference points throughout the creative process, providing a psychological language for constructing and interpreting imagery. The artwork is based on a first-person dream diary, with recorded experiences and emotional states organized into a narrative scenario. Using Cinema 4D and VR technology, the dream is rendered into an immersive space. VR allows for a sensory experience and level of immersion not possible with flat media, inviting viewers to enter the ‘interior’ of the dream. Immersive video techniques inspired by Dreamcore and Liminal Space aesthetics are employed to evoke sensory anxiety, positioning the viewer not as a passive observer but as an active participant within the dreamscape. Additionally, AI-generated music is incorporated to weave emotion into each dream sequence, enhancing the sensory immersion. The spatial design begins with recognizable real-world settings, but these spaces gradually collapse or distort structurally, intensifying psychological tension and unconscious anxiety. Nightmares are interpreted here as emotional patterns that recur throughout the researcher’s life and as a psychological form of breathing essential for survival. Based on this understanding, the study proposes the central theme: "Dream = Breath," suggesting that nightmares, while distressing, can serve as a catalyst for survival and vitality in the real world. The nightmares represented in this project are not mere reproductions; rather, through VR’s immersive features, sound design, and dynamic viewpoints, they provoke sensory responses and induce immersive viewer experiences. This research is both an experiment in personal emotional processing and an exploration of artistic representation. Dreams, to the researcher, are akin to breath—especially nightmares, which paradoxically distress and enliven. This study presents a case of artistic practice demonstrating how an unreal and deeply personal experience such as a nightmare can be visually reconstructed and how such representation can be translated into immersive experiences for an audience.
This study approaches hoarding disorder not as a purely pathological condition, but as a subject for visual interpretation of the emotional structures embedded in possessions. People often hesitate to discard objects for emotional reasons such as "I might need it later" or "it holds precious memories," revealing an attempt to avoid psychological discomfort and the fear of loss. Such behavior is not merely a failure of organization, but rather a reflection of a complex and structured emotional state. This study explores how such emotional complexity can be translated into the language of visual design. The researcher selected herself as the subject of study, identifying 200 personal items that had been kept over a long period. Initially, about 350 objects were considered, and from these, 200 were chosen based on their emotional significance—particularly those associated with experiences of difficulty discarding or a clear connection to one or more of the following: memory, attachment, or necessity. Each item was evaluated based on three criteria: level of attachment, relevance to memory, and necessity in daily life. Each criterion was scored using a 5-point scale, producing a total emotional score of up to 15 per item. These emotional scores served as a quantified index of the psychological weight each object holds. To visualize this, three square-shaped books—measuring 100mm, 200mm, and 300mm—were created. The proportional structure of 100:200:300 not only clarifies the differences in emotional density but also maintains visual harmony. The square format was chosen for its clarity in conveying area and its intuitive association with the “psychological spatiality” of emotions. As such, the varying book sizes function as spatial metaphors: the larger the book, the heavier and deeper the emotional weight of the object contained within. Items with higher scores were placed in larger books. The book design employed halftone techniques to visually imply the blurriness of emotion, distortion of memory, and passage of time. Emotional scores function not as mere numbers, but as devices that translate the density, ambiguity, and depth of emotion into visual terms. This approach reveals that stored objects are not just belongings but are personal archives infused with identity and emotion. Ultimately, this study proposes a methodology for visualizing intangible emotions through area-based representation. It demonstrates how design can serve as a tool to interpret and communicate emotional structures. By translating emotional layers into physical dimensions, this experiment suggests that visual design can be a strategic medium for exploring and expressing psychological space. Furthermore, it opens up new possibilities for emotion-based communication and auto-narrative design research.
