The 1960s marked a period when Kim Chungup moved away from the architectural influence of Le Corbusier. Especially during the latter half of the 1960s, Kim's work shifted from bold and emotional expressions to more restrained and standardized architectural vocabularies, leaving traces across the newly developing areas of Seoul. Among these, the Humanities & Social Science Hall at Hongik University, designed in 1967, displays distinctive formal characteristics, yet no research has been conducted on this work. Similarly, the 1966 College of Home Economics Building Project at Yonsei University, which exhibits a strikingly similar form, has also remained unstudied. Thus, this study aims to analyze the Humanities & Social Science Hall at Hongik University to understand Kim Chungup's design intent and expressions, clarify the boundaries between Kim's original design and later additions, and explore the architectural characteristics, significance, and limitations of Kim's work by examining the similarities observed in the College of Home Economics Building Project. This research analyzes the design stages of the Humanities & Social Science Hall by studying drawings and sketches to identify the design intentions and characteristics. Additionally, sketches, drawings, and model photographs of the College of Home Economics Building Project are analyzed to uncover shared features between the two projects. Through this comparison, the study examines the relationship between the two works and how Kim's architectural characteristics are revealed. The analysis shows that the Humanities & Social Science Hall at Hongik University is an extension of the College of Home Economics Building Project at Yonsei University, suggesting that they were essentially a single project. Kim Chungup, who often employed tectonic expressions by exposing structural systems to emphasize structural aesthetics, further developed this approach in the late 1960s. In earlier works, he tended to expose the structural framework or use material contrasts, but by the late 1960s, he began to clearly articulate the connections between the structural elements within the framework. Lastly, the relationship between exposed columns and slabs in both projects was found to be closer to Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House than Le Corbusier's 'Dom-Ino' system, revealing that Kim Chungup in the late 1960s showed an inclination towards Miesian architecture. This study provides pioneering research on the previously unexamined Humanities & Social Science Hall at Hongik University and uncovers the forgotten sketches of the College of Home Economics Building Project at Yonsei University. Furthermore, it distinguishes the tectonic characteristics of Kim's work from the 1960s and earlier. By highlighting the connection between Kim Chungup's pre-Samil Building projects and Mies van der Rohe's architectural approach, this paper offers new perspectives for future research on Kim's architecture and contributes to the study of modern architectural history. The rapid urbanization and development of transportation infrastructure have led to a decline in the usage of routes, resulting in idle lands being neglected. These idle lands, beyond their basic function as road facilities, hold potential for creating new value through architectural approaches based on dwell time and rest-related activities. This study comprehensively analyzes the temporal and locational characteristics of idle lands along routes and proposes effective utilization strategies through the development of multi-functional programs and spatial compositions tailored to dwell times. The research begins by examining the concept and current status of routes, comparing them with highways to identify the unique characteristics of routes and the causes behind the formation of idle lands. Based on this, the study analyzes the impact of dwell time on rest-related activities and architectural spatial configurations for the utilization of idle lands. Subsequently, dwell times are categorized into short-term, mid-term, and long-term stays to derive strategies for program composition and spatial arrangement for each duration. Short-term spaces are designed for functional rest with quick and convenient accessibility, mid-term spaces focus on extending dwell time through cultural and recreational activities, and long-term spaces are conceptualized to offer deep connections with nature through accommodation and immersive experiences. Through the analysis of utilization cases, this study identifies key elements for the design of idle lands along routes: linkage with natural landscapes, time-based spatial configurations, and the integration of multi-functional programs. Building upon these findings, the research proposes architectural designs that reflect the geographical and environmental characteristics of the selected sites, transforming idle lands from mere transit spaces into destinations offering unique rest experiences and multi-dimensional spatial value for road users and local residents. This study aims to enhance the value of routes by providing rest spaces that respond to contemporary needs and exploring new possibilities for the road environment.

Juhani Pallasmaa’s architectural theory has reinterpreted architectural experience through the themes of body, senses, material, memory, and atmosphere. However, his theory has mostly been discussed at the level of writings and philosophical interpretation, while relatively little attention has been paid to how it was spatialized in the buildings in which Pallasmaa was directly involved as an architect. This study analyzes how Pallasmaa’s theory is applied and transformed through material, circulation, light, spatial composition, and adjustments in the process of realization. To this end, two analytical frameworks, tactile spatial perception and embodied atmosphere, are derived from Pallasmaa’s major writings and applied to the Korundi House of Culture and the SIIDA Sami Museum. Korundi is a renovation project that transformed an existing industrial building into a cultural facility, whereas SIIDA is a newly built museum based on Sami culture and the natural environment of northern Lapland. Since the two cases differ in site, program, and construction conditions, they provide an appropriate basis for comparing how Pallasmaa’s theory is implemented differently according to specific conditions. The analysis shows that, in Korundi, temporality is revealed through the material traces of the existing building and the contrast between the old structure and the new addition. The memory of the existing building is also combined with present cultural activities to form an atmosphere of place. In contrast, in SIIDA, the regulation of movement through the switchback ramp and the sequential composition of the exhibition narrative organize Sami culture and the northern natural environment into a unified visitor experience. In both cases, design intentions were adjusted by actual conditions such as regulations, structure, materials, and program. These adjustments sometimes strengthened the final spatial experience, while at other times they remained as functional or sensory limitations. Therefore, Pallasmaa’s architectural theory is not applied to actual buildings as a complete and fixed form. Rather, it is partially realized and transformed through its relationship with site, program, and construction conditions.

      RANK : 247599

The city changes ceaselessly. Some alleys will soon vanish under plans for redevelopment and reconstruction; some spaces are being newly built at this very moment; and others exist only in drawings and the imagination, in places we have not yet set foot. How can we record, represent, and bodily experience these three kinds of space—the disappearing, the emerging, and the absent? This question is the point of departure for this study. Until now, the recording of space has largely relied on photography and video. Yet these media confine three-dimensional space, which unfolds and is experienced in depth, to a two-dimensional plane, fixing the observer's gaze to the single window of the screen. To capture the spatial volume, the actual perceived scale, and the organic relations of complex urban fabric, a new mode of recording is required. This study focuses on Point Cloud Data (hereafter PCD), a measurement-based set of three-dimensional points acquired through LiDAR or photogrammetry. Each point is the trace of a physical event of measurement—the spot where a laser or light struck a real surface and returned. Unlike a mesh, which arbitrarily interpolates surfaces to produce a seamless solid, PCD leaves the regions measurement did not reach unfilled, as void. The central argument of this study is that this void is not a deficiency in the data but a phenomenologically meaningful in-between space. This perspective draws on the phenomenology of perception of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, for whom space is not an empty container viewed from the outside but something an embodied subject constitutes only by dwelling within it. The void of PCD resembles this structure of perception: whereas a seamlessly filled mesh approaches the fiction of a completed world, the void—honestly disclosing the limits of measurement—preserves the trace of a perception performed by a body standing at a particular place and a particular moment. What Merleau-Ponty observed in his reading of the painter Paul Cézanne resonates here: Cézanne sought to paint the world as it first appears to perception, before the mind reconstructs it, and his repeated painting of the same mountain reflects how the perceived world changed with every shift of light, atmosphere, and time. PCD is likewise never the product of neutral measurement but always a record of perception carried out within concrete circumstances. When PCD is combined with Virtual Reality (hereafter VR), these characteristics lead to a new mode of experience. An experience impossible in photography or video—walking directly into the space, turning one's head, and gauging depth bodily—becomes possible within VR. The space PCD produces, however, is not a near-photorealistic immersion; passing among surfaceless floating points, we encounter familiar alleys as if viewed through an infrared or ultraviolet lens, and this defamiliarization lets us see everyday space anew. On this foundation, this study adopts a structure that proceeds from preliminary experiments—conducted on urban fabric of differing character and surveyed by differing methods—toward a main experiment that applies and verifies the approach in an actual exhibition setting. Each site is less an end in itself than a testbed for confirming how the methodology operates under different spatial conditions. Because PCD outputs vary with the materiality and scale of space and with light and time, the testbeds cannot be chosen arbitrarily. Accordingly, two contrasting types of urban fabric commonly encountered in Seoul were selected for the preliminary experiments: the Jangwi-dong area, typical of the narrow, high-density, low-rise residential alley; and the Jangmi Apartment area in Yeouido, one of Seoul's early high-rise complexes, with broad, open exterior space. Preliminary Experiment 1 examined the low-rise residential alleys of Jangwi-dong. To capture the dense cluster of narrow alleys and low buildings with precision, a fixed terrestrial LiDAR (terrestrial laser scanner) method was adopted, and scans measured from multiple positions were registered into a single PCD of the whole alley. This process allowed close observation of where and how voids arise from occlusion, the more so in narrow spaces. Comparing the PCD with a reverse-engineered model further revealed that PCD preserves the everyday traces—parked cars, potted plants, tangled wires—that interpretive modeling erases, confirming the value of its non-selective recording. Preliminary Experiment 2 examined the high-rise apartment complex in Yeouido. Judging a method of surveying while moving through the space to be better suited to the large scale and open exterior than fixed equipment, mobile 360-degree photogrammetry was applied. Generating PCD from continuous footage recorded while walking through the complex, this method offered high accessibility and mobility, efficiently recording broad areas difficult to capture with fixed equipment. The experiment further examined how adjusting point size and virtual viewpoints in software can treat color PCD as expressive visual material, and how heterogeneous data—photogrammetric exterior PCD combined with interior-structure PCD converted from drawing-based modeling—can be synthesized into one scene to complement the limits of any single survey method. The two preliminary experiments confirmed that the effective survey method differs according to the character of the urban fabric, that synthesizing data of differing character yields a richer record, and that point density and void distribution vary with the object's materiality, light, and time—supporting the argument that sites must be selected by clear criteria. The site of the main experiment is the alley fabric of Singil District 2 in Yeongdeungpo-gu. The district was selected on the practical condition that the experiential environment built here could be verified in an actual viewing setting, as the site of an exhibition project the researcher participated in with support from the Yeongdeungpo Culture Foundation. Furthermore, comparing the alley morphology of Jangwi-dong, the Yeouido Jangmi Apartment area, and Singil District 2 at the same scale confirmed that Singil District 2—with its irregular parcels, frequent changes of direction, and the complex coexistence of alleys large and small—offers conditions for intensively observing the continuous spatial sequence formed through walking. The resulting experiential environment was realized as part of the collaborative work ⟨Yeongdeung-halmang: Rescue the Boundary Island⟩ (2025) and experienced by visitors at the exhibition ⟨Mountain Shadow, Water, Star, Moon, Scent⟩ (Oct. 17 – Nov. 2, 2025), hosted by Yeongdeungpo-gu and the Yeongdeungpo Culture Foundation. Because the site was at once the object of measurement and the place of the exhibition the visitors experienced, the main experiment offered an opportunity to confirm how this methodology operates in a real viewing environment. The improvements drawn from the preliminary experiments were incorporated as follows. Maintaining the principle of treating PCD itself as the object of experience rather than converting it to a mesh, the alleys were recorded at the average pedestrian eye level (about 1.6–1.8 m) and an everyday walking speed (about 4–5 km/h) for continuous, color-inclusive acquisition from a walking viewpoint, with the aim of a real-time environment in which the experiencer moves and chooses viewpoints autonomously—going beyond the one-directional representation that remained at the level of observation. The acquired data underwent noise removal, object cleanup, and scale correction based on on-site measurements, and ten alley point clouds were registered into a single continuous sequence. Rather than replicating the site as it is, spatial relations were edited so that the blocking and opening of sightlines, changes in alley width, and changes of direction would be experienced continuously. In implementing this in a Unity-based VR environment, transparent colliders were placed at positions matching the PCD to define the range of movement, and continuous locomotion—rather than teleportation—was adopted so that changes in the density and transparency of PCD with movement would translate into the perception of depth and scale. In addition, interactive objects created by scanning items that actually existed at the site, together with selective scene loading, were applied so that experiencers could actively compose their own paths by collecting objects. Finally, comparison with 360-degree photography and road view at the same location—across the perception of depth and scale, the continuous spatial sequence and freedom of exploration, and the maintenance of selective exploration and real-time experience—confirmed that PCD can function as a medium for recording, representing, and experiencing urban space within VR. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, PCD is a medium that records urban space honestly on the basis of measurement, and an expressive medium that enables a bodily spatial experience distinct from mesh-based or two-dimensional records; at its core lies the void, reinterpreted not as deficiency but as phenomenological margin. Second, the appropriate survey method differs according to the character of the urban fabric, and synthesizing heterogeneous data can transcend the limits of any single method. Third, the methodology thus constructed is not confined to one kind of space; it can extend into a broad medium for recording, representing, and experiencing the city—reaching not only spaces now disappearing but also those that presently exist, those yet to be built, and those one cannot easily visit. Furthermore, as computational performance advances and lightweight glasses-type devices come to replace heavy HMDs, PCD-based spatial experience is expected to widen its scope still further, extending from existing urban fabric to imagined places not yet realized.
