Contemporary social challenges are multilayered and complex, resisting resolution through single disciplines or isolated professional expertise. These wicked problems require collaboration across diverse fields, demanding continuous dialogue to understand and reframe issues from multiple perspectives. The core task is not finding predetermined answers but discovering what the problem truly is, shifting viewpoints, questioning assumptions, and reconstructing fundamental framings. In this approach, problem-finding becomes problem-solving itself, establishing the essential rationale for transdisciplinary practice. Artificial intelligence has fundamentally transformed this landscape. AI now functions as a collaborative partner, augmenting how designers and professionals think, decide, and create across domains. Yet design education remains anchored in traditional paradigms, failing to adequately prepare designers for their evolving roles in the AI era. This research addresses that critical gap by developing AI-augmented transdisciplinary design education aligned with contemporary technological and social realities. This study theoretically redefines designer roles and competencies within an AI-augmented transdisciplinary framework, then develops a practical educational framework for implementation in actual pedagogical contexts. It represents a foundational recalibration for cultivating designers equipped with the competencies demanded by rapidly shifting professional landscapes. The research establishes necessity through three critical dimensions: the expanding conceptual scope of design, the imperative to address complex challenges, and the transforming role of transdisciplinary designers. It analyzes how AI currently augments designer capabilities across various domains and engagement levels, identifying strategic integration points and requisite competencies. Through critical examination of existing educational models and comparative analysis of domestic and international graduate design curricula, the study reveals structural inadequacies in contemporary design education. Building on this foundation, the research proposes a comprehensive AI-Augmented Transdisciplinary Design Education Framework. The framework encompasses educational objectives and learning outcomes, pedagogical activities, AI utilization strategies, teaching-learning methodologies, assessment and feedback systems, instructor competencies, and curricular operational structures. Expert validation confirms both theoretical validity and practical applicability. While empirical classroom verification remains future work, this framework transcends idealistic proposition. It synthesizes elements already emerging across progressive design programs, systematically organizing scattered innovations into coherent structure grounded in documented practice. It provides educators with actionable implementation pathways while establishing conceptual infrastructure for the transformation of design education. This research does more than propose a framework. It redefines what design education must become when intelligence itself, human and artificial, operates in fundamentally new configurations of collaboration, creativity, and capability.

The purpose of this study is to investigate how changing types and roles of prototyping affects creation of creativity in the design process. In the field of design, interest in creativity is rising to create new products and services that can adapt to a rapidly changing environment and gain competitive advantage. Creativity is defined as ability, thought or behavior to create new and original ideas and is actively being studied both in academia and industry as an essential element of innovation. David Kelley emphasizes the role of 'the problem solving', which is not limited to design, by defining 'design is a process of solving a problem rather than making appearance attractive by putting it at the time of completion'. We often experience that the problem solving is directly linked to creativity. Therefore, design can be said to be a process of making a product with a new value originated from creativity.Creativity is generally regarded as necessarily accompanied by expertise, but it cannot be improved only by acquisition of knowledge or skills. Creativity is developed by a flexible and broad way of thinking rather than skill and knowledge while experience acquired from a flexible way of thinking enhances the value of expertise. John Dewey, who emphasized importance of experience, explained the value of doing, using the term 'Learning by Doing'. He argued that creativity may be irrelevant or inversely related to intelligence or talent and acquired efforts and positive consciousness are creative factors that enable problem solving. ‘The d-school' (Institute of Design at Stanford) at the Stanford University is a prime example of an innovative and creative talent development program. The program adopts the teaching method that creates an experience focused on 'execution and creation' and David Kelley in this school defined prototyping as 'thinking with your hands'. The act of realizing the intangible in consciousness implies to link mind with body. Until ‘attempt’ reaches ‘the achievement’ throughout execution, it plays a major role in creativity. Prototyping, which is usually used in practice, was traditionally aimed at producing models as close to final products as possible by using materials such as polystyrene foam, acrylic or ABS resin (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene resin) but according to degree of difficulty and purpose the current prototyping is subdivided and expanded to include model-making, role playing, testing, and video producing. The use of the expanded prototyping is divided into two cases, one for divergent thinking and one for convergent thinking. First, divergent thinking has the advantage of being able to making various choices, as it is often used for rapid prototyping in order to design a product throughout combination of existing products or a completely new product, for repetitive soft prototyping for making ideas and finally for receiving feedback for the purpose of collaborating with people in other fields. Second, convergent thinking is used for testing and producing UX (user experience) and UI (user interface) design of a product and intended for an ergonomic approach focusing on physical feeling and emotional feeling. Prototyping has been used mainly in a final stage of design for the purpose of review, evaluation, and introduction. However, as prototyping became subdivided, in order to generate ideas it was moved to ‘the defining a problem’ and ‘the discovering an idea’ parts, which is in an early stage of design process. Since process of design plays a role in creating logic and objectification in the course of the process for the purpose of realizing ideas, to perform a project efficiently it is important to choose suitable prototyping for different stages of the design process. Since without sketch and modeling skills obtained over many years of practice, designers can express their creativity by using their experience through execution, a flexible way of thinking mainly for execution created the concept of a new expert called 'design thinker (Bernard Roth, 2015)'. This new concept gives even beginners and people lack of experience an opportunity to develop creativity by providing a special experience. In addition, the limitation of the expertise which cannot be accumulated with a simple technology-oriented curriculum can be overcome through repetitions of ‘practice’ after ‘small failures’ based on a user-centered way of thinking. These experiences get structured to help problem solving and creativity manifest when existing irrelevant experiences become related each other according to the concept of constructivism. The process of classifying prototyping according to its level of difficulty and usage and applying it to each step of the design process enables other designers lack of design expertise to perform design projects, shortens the process and then results in speeding up ‘the problem solving’. To demonstrate the relevance among creativity, prototyping, and design process, this study conducted the following experiments. The students from one of the science high schools in Korea have been chosen as the participants. They are regarded as suitable for the education program pursued by the d school which pursues the innovation. The experiments consist of preliminary experiments, main experiments, expert evaluations, and in-depth interviews. Experiments were carried out to investigate how the number of prototyping and the application suitable for its stages affect creativity of participants in the process of design. For the preliminary experiments, 80design high school students were asked to answer questions to see how they understood and experienced design. The main experiment takes 30 science highschool students. For 16 weeks they participated in the design project on the design process over 2 hours each week. Participants divided into two groups participated in the experiment by varying the number of prototyping. We induced students to think freely based on divergent thinking by using simple materials to handle, such as clay, paper, foam board, and poly-styrene foam. On the other hand we tried to induce converging thinking, which aims at approaching the best results by increasing accuracy of dimensions and shapes, by using materials, which require more experience, such as MDF (medium density fiber board) and ABS(acrylonitrile butadiene styrene filaments). This experiment shows that as segmentation of the process and the number of prototyping increased, ‘the problem solving' has been improved and the progress of the design process speeds up. From the viewpoint of morphological development, it can be seen that creativity is manifested as idea is embodied, and the stage of embodying idea has been continuously performed in the stages of sketch phase, soft prototyping, laser-cut, and up to a final prototyping. It is statistically confirmed that the more the number of prototyping increases, the more the participants appreciate the value of satisfaction and prototyping. According top participants self-evaluation on the result of the project, we could find a correlation between the number of prototyping and the result. According to the evaluation done by the experts who worked in the design field for more than 10 years, the results of the highest scores from the two groups belong to the group with a large number of prototypes. The evaluations done by the participants and the experts were shown to coincide and resemble statistically. This study shows that to increase the number of elementary prototyping and apply it repeatedly in the design process works well for idea development and manifestation as methodology for creativity manifestation and repeating trial and error is helpful to create ideas, find and solve a problem. Especially for beginners and non-experienced people, an optimistic and flexible way of thinking and systematic design processes rather than skills and knowledge played a great role increasing their satisfaction of the results and confidence.

The world economy has recently started the transition into creative economy where creativity is considered a critical element of economic development. In 2013, the Korean government presented creative economy as their management philosophy and started focusing on developing new government policies promoting venture & SMEs (Small & Medium-sized Enterprises). This worldwide interest in the creative economy has resulted in increased attention on developing creative industries where the fundamental basis for information and knowledge is creativity. Consequently, design has been put under the spotlight as one of the main underlying factors behind creative industries. Recently, not only has there been growing acknowledgement of the aesthetic side of design, but also as a method to help management strategies and solve social problems. In contrast to the extension of awareness of design, however, the Korean design industry has had trouble with both companies that provide and consume design services. Design service producing companies are unable to expand in scale and manpower because of trouble maintaining customers. Also, consuming companies are unable to utilize design as an innovative method because of the outdated interest in the technical side of design. Therefore, defining design as the catalyst for creative economy, the current experiment focused on discovering a method to upgrade the Korean design industry through corporate partnership between design service producing and consuming companies. We chose a 'One-Person Enterprise Designer', a worldwide trend in design service production, and SMEs, the driving force in implementing creative economy in Korea, as research targets. Our research goals are as summarized as follows. First, we researched the concept and characteristics of SMEs, creative economy and creative industry, design, and the design industry to provide background information for our thesis. Also, we deducted the characteristics and concepts of the one-person enterprise designer through design consultancies and one-person design companies. A one person enterprise designer is one or a group of designers that are proactive and capable of creatively inventing innovative products or services. It is significantly important to the Korean industry because one-person enterprises are a worldwide trend, the flexibility of the group is a perfect fit for the creative economy era. Besides it acts as a starting point for design industry development, as well as includes the growing number of freelancer designers. Second, we investigated the current industrial conditions of enterprises that produce and consume design services. In order to understand the conditions of design consultancies from the perspectives of service production, we researched the industry scale, sales to customer ratio, intellectual property rights knowledge, as well as the errors and strategies of management. We conducted a survey, created by the Korean central office group, targeted towards one-person enterprise designers to understand the error and situation of the domestic industry. Lastly, to research the conditions of design service consumption, we investigated the size of the industry as well as the design service consuming field and industries’knowledge level of design. Through investigating the situation of enterprises that produce design service, we found that a plan to strengthen overseas expansion and the network between business customers and enterprises of its kind would externally improve the design industry in Korea. Continuous customer attraction, training and supplying professional manpower, strengthening intellectual property rights knowledge and utilization would also internally improve the Korean design industry. Additionally, we discovered that from the perspectives of service consumption, there was increasing demand for design by fostering design awareness and increasing consumption and application. Third, we researched government funding for both design service producing and consuming enterprises. We conducted a frequency analysis classified by the function, field, and target of support offered to a one-person enterprise designer from the view point of service supply. Consumption-wise, we analyzed the support level of SMEs. The one-person enterprise support function analysis allowed us to deduct a plan to fund business connection, external networking, intellectual rights, provide information, education, as well as strengthen funding for overseas expansion. The support field results showed that funding for experience-based design fields, such as service and UX design, must be increased and the support target results allowed us to deduct a plan to enhance funding for freelance designers. Also, we discovered the urgency of figuring out a method to support design awareness cultivation and improve level of utilizing design through the support level analysis of SMEs. Lastly, 'Private Network Management System' was proposed in this study in order to promote equal growth of design producing and consuming enterprises based on the current industry trends and support. 'Private Design Firms Association' was proposed as well to effectively operate and continuously maintain the private network management system. The primary roles of the private design firms association include offering industry-based support, such as certifying professional designers and design enterprises, consultation for improving design related legislations, supporting business matching and overseas expansions for design service-related enterprises, as well as providing manpower to train professionals. The government must delegate authority to the association for it to function effectively and fulfill its purposes. The delegation of authority means that the government must change the role which it mainly plays; the government must focus on developing new legislation or improving existing legislation to establish the groundwork for the improvement of the domestic design industry as well as allowing private companies to operate with more flexibility. In conclusion, this study provides a theoretical framework for a persisting design industry development plan in the hope that it will contribute to the development of the domestic design industry in Korea.

In this thesis aims to develop a new problem-solving process through the integration of technology and design, centered on patent data, and to propose practical strategies to enhance the efficiency of this integration. Specifically, it suggests concrete approaches to facilitate smooth communication among stakeholders and demonstrates how the integration of patents and design can play a critical role in innovative problem-solving and product development. Today, design plays a central role in creating user experiences and technological value, while patent data serves as a critical repository of technical information, enabling the realization of integrated design. This study, based on this background, focuses on three key areas to develop a systematic and creative process that utilizes patent data to achieve the integration of technology and design. First of all, the foundational model of the patent integration process for problem-solving is defined and systematically structured by aligning its phases it with the basic model of the design process. Secondly, a process that maximizes the effectiveness of patent and design integration is developed and proposed through the application of multidisciplinary research methodologies. Finally, the interactions among stakeholders involved in patent and design integration projects are thoroughly analyzed to identify strategies for enhancing the efficiency of their collaboration. The foundational model of the patent integration process propose in this study consists of four stages: Research, Analysis, Solution, and Validation. These stages are systematically aligned with the four stages of the basic design process model: Research, Analysis, Synthesis, and Evaluation. Based on these principles and structures, the foundational model of the patent-integrated design process is constructed. By applying stage-specific methods from both patent and design processes, a new problem-solving process is developed to facilitate effective solutions and generate innovative outcomes. Additionally, in-depth expert interviews are conducted to analyze the problems and areas for improvement within the integration process of patents and design. Based on these findings, efficient communication strategies are proposed, grounded in stage-specific 'Touch Points' of the process. These strategies maximize collaboration between patent experts and designers, enhancing the effectiveness of the integration process and providing a foundation for designing optimized intigration processes tailored to individual projects. This study demonstrates that patent data can provides a basis for generating innovative and feasilbe solutions to complex problems. Moreover, it provides a direction for addressing communication challenges in integration projects through the application of a patent-integrated design process. Future research will explore methods for enabling designers involved in various integration projects to independently simplify and execute the proposed patent-driven problem-solving process. Additionally, it will focus on strategies for fostering effective collaboration with patent experts to optimize process efficiency. Furthermore, the findings of this study are anticipated to provide fundamental resources and strategic guidance not only to agencies under the Korean Intellectual Property Office(KIPO) but also to other specialized organizations, such as the Korea Institute of Design Promotion(KIDP). These organizations can utilize the insights to conduct patent-design integration projects and develop processes aimed at merging design with other fields. Ultimately, this research seeks to broaden the scope of design and technology integration while laying a foundation for innovation and growth within the design sector.

The mainstream of the times is an important element in design. Along with the passage and change of the times, design paradigms change thus, it is necessary for elements with which good design is assessed to evolve together as objective and accurate assessment indicators. Consumer characteristics along with the consumption environment also keep changing. Consumers have been able to participate in social issues in various ways and to express personal intentions freely without being restricted by place through enhancing social connectivity with SNS(Social Networking Service). In order to complement the assessment of good design, which has lacked objectivity and transparency as it has been dependent only on professionals or special institutions, this study aims to conduct research and compare various cases of the assessment of good design at home and abroad and to create detailed indicators that assess designs more objectively and reasonably for determining good designs through design professionals, corporations, and consumers. For this study, first, a review was undertaken to find how design has affected the assessment indicators of good design through looking at the environmental changes from the 1800s, when design was first begun, to the present by reviewing in accordance with chronology and by researching any change of the consumption environment. Second, through a theoretical consideration of design, a review was undertaken of the correct definition of good design and the importance of design and awards at home and abroad from innovative design cases were introduced. Third, research was carried out into the assessment elements and assessment types of good design awards at home and abroad and a table was prepared to compare these elements thereby, the level of importance and any difference in assessment elements of each country was identified. Fourth, good prize-winning designs which were selected at two good design awards in Korea (Pin Up Design Awards, Product with Good Design) and three good design awards in foreign countries (IF, Reddot, and IDEA) were analyzed to discover their types, CMF, and design characteristics. Then, the latest design trend of home appliances that have received good design awards was investigated to be utilized for researching the assessment elements of good design. Fifth, primary and secondary surveys were carried out aimed at design professionals, corporations, and consumers for determining the assessment elements of good design. The primary survey was conducted through FGI, 1:1 in-depth interview, and phone interview. Meanwhile, in the secondary survey, the contents were analyzed through an on-line survey based on assessment elements determined from the primary survey, and proposals made based on the result. The contents researched in the paper as above were reviewed and the meanings and implications of the study are as follows. First, the research showed that the definition and assessment elements of good design were confirmed to change constantly in accordance with the environment and the issues and design paradigm of the times. Although design has been defined by several persons, in considering the key contents, the definition of design may be summarized from five viewpoints including human, science (technology), business, art, and sensibility. Also, the change of design according to environmental change was begun from the 1,800s and has lasted to date. The study classified this period into seven periods of technical design, functional design, commercial design, the golden era of design, core of companies, main agents of innovation, and consumer-oriented design. Then, the study discussed the issues that the design field has had during these periods and how design has evolved with which changes. Second, the definition of good design may be summarized in six items involving human, environment, society, business, technology, and beauty thus, a more concrete description is provided. Regarding the conditions of good design, the IDSA announced four contents including functional, aesthetic, symbolic, and organizational competence adequacies. Also, the Samsung Economic Research Institute classified the definition into the four elements of originality, satisfaction of six senses, user friendliness, and identity. Also, the importance of good design was discussed through diverse cases. In detail, the importance of good design was emphasized by intensive research into the cases of Sony’s Walkman, Apple’s IPod, and LG Electronics’ docking cassette. In an analysis of current good design, the study introduced three representative awards in Korea and 12 awards in foreign countries. Third, the assessment factors for good design awards at home and abroad were investigated. As a result of analyzing the assessment elements of two awards in Korea and 12 awards in foreign countries, the study could extract 30 assessment elements. From preparing and comparing these elements in a table, the level of importance and any difference regarding assessment elements of each country was determined. Next, for research into the assessment of good design awards, three awards in Korea and three awards in foreign countries were selected and considered to determine which assessment standard and which assessment methods they had used and this provided a tool for assessment indicators. Fourth, the study analyzed prize-winning designs during the latest three years of 2010 to 2012 from good design awards of two awards in Korea (Pin Up Design Awards, Product with Good Design) and three foreign design awards (IF, Reddot, and IDEA) and discovered their types, CMF, and design characteristics. Then, the latest design trend of home appliances of good design awards was investigated and utilized for researching the assessment elements of good design. Fifth, four uppermost assessment elements (human, technology, business, and social responsibility) and 16 assessment elements (functionality, durability, popularity, morality, originality, guarantee, usability, productivity, profitability, trend of the times, aesthetics, safety, satisfaction of desire, sustainability, progressivity, and rationality) from the research results were determined to be assessment indicators determining good design. Accordingly, provided that they may be utilized as influential assessment standards on good design at good design awards and corporations, they may be assessment indicators with which objective good design may be selected through a fair and balanced judgment. Among the uppermost assessment elements of this study, social responsibility was positioned as an important element along with human, technology, and business. As a result, social responsibility, which has been regarded as relatively unimportant, should be considered as important in the assessment element of good design. As research for proposing the assessment indicators of good design in order to enhance consumers’ participation, this paper proposed assessment elements that may can be applied to the assessment of good design. The meaning of this paper may be found in proposing detailed and objective assessment indicators by attracting the participation of stakeholders, namely consumers, corporations, and professionals.

The purpose of this study is to establish a specific evaluation system for the concept of perception by stage of emotional design. The basic reason for the establishment of an evaluation system for emotional design is the minimisation of errors due to the difference in perception between designers (companies) and consumers (users). By correctly understanding the consumer's (user's) perception system from the planning and design stage of products and services, a virtuous circle leading to the production and consumption of sustainable products and services can be achieved. The first impression from the perspective of a consumer purchasing a product or service is the emotional stimulation stage, followed by the actual purchase stage through the expression of purchase motivation, and then a comprehensive evaluation of the product or service based on the post-purchase experience of its use. The three stages of emotional design (ED 3s), defined by cognitive psychologist Don Norman as the visceral, behavioural and reflective stages, describe this process of consumer (user) perception of purchase and use. The visceral stage is the emotional reception of a product through appearance or first impression. The Behavioural Design Stage is characterised by making the product easy to use and enjoy. Through the instinctive and behavioural stages, the consumer (user) has an 'emotional experience.' Finally, the Reflective Stage is characterised by the overall satisfaction generated by remembering the experience, whether positive or negative. This can be conceptualised as the 'cognitive experience,' which is the result of the accumulation of brand reputation on the part of the company and the purchase and usage experience of the consumer. This paper primarily covers the need for a clear distinction and understanding of each stage in terms of production and consumption that can be sustained as the three stages (ED 3s) of emotional design in the psychological domain of consumers (users). However, objective criteria have not been established. In the process of observation and confirmation in an empirical study with university students, it was confirmed that there is a gap between the conceptual understanding of the ED 3s theory and its practical application, depending on who interprets the actual product service. Similarly, communication between design and marketing professionals in the initial planning phase of a product/service can be seen as a problem in which thoughts are shared conceptually, but it is difficult to objectify specific factors for each phase, leading to repeated arbitrary interpretations. The validity of the problem is demonstrated by the fact that Norman, who presented a conceptual model of three stages of emotional design, also emphasised the difficulty of unambiguously simplifying the emotional stages. Therefore, in this study, we focused on the need for quantitative criteria for classifying the stages of ED 3s and how to ensure them, noting that the weight and interpretation of the stages may vary depending on the situation depending on the planners when planning and proposing products and services to end consumers based on the conceptual understanding of ED 3s. Through research on the understanding and classification of the detailed items of ED 3s, it can be used as a baseline for designers to understand consumers (users) in the development of new products and services. The aim of this study is to derive objective questions about consumers' perceptions of the stages of ED 3s before, during and after purchase, in order to establish a baseline for companies (designers) who plan, produce and sell new products and services. As a specific research method, we adopted the method of cross-linking the stages of consumer purchase learning emphasised by marketing and ED 3s in the field of design. Based on the 3 stages and 16 detailed items of Bloom's (1953) three-stage learning system (BL 3s), which he developed in the field of education, we established the criteria for the development of the ED 3s scale. As a detailed implementation plan, we first conducted a feasibility study on the relationship between Bloom's three-step learning system in the field of education, the three-step classification of emotional design, and the stages of consumer purchase perception in marketing through open-ended interviews with professionals. We then extracted items with reliability and validity from previous emotional design studies and matched items to the 16 categories of Bloom's three-stage learning system through expert card classification. Then, using IBM's SPSS v29 statistical analysis tool, the first consumer preliminary feasibility study was conducted with the extracted questions, and the second expert open-ended questionnaire was conducted based on the validated questions. Based on the questions extracted from the open expert questionnaire by eliminating the questions that reflected the experts' opinions and those that were redundant with them, a closed expert questionnaire was conducted with 24 experts and the final questions were derived using a content validity ratio (CVR). Once the final questions were developed, 400 consumers were surveyed about their existing smartphones or smartwatches. To assess the performance of emotional design across three domains and 16 item groups, and to identify associations with consumers' purchase intentions and preferences, the final results were analysed using structural equations with AMOS.

Since the service design concept developed, service design projects have been practiced lively in many different countries on both private and public sectors. Various service design projects are producing noticeable results worldwide, but there is no valid standard to evaluate the results objectively so far. In order to make service design profitable and satisfying, a valid service design evaluation system is needed. As a matter of fact, there has been an increasing awareness of the evaluation method for providing the good quality services consistently but generally the evaluation models most used for service quality are from marketing fields. Even though European service design agencies are developing evaluating models, those models are either only focused on user's satisfaction or the cost reduction. Service design providers have used various combinations of different evaluation models for each service design project. Because of the lack of consistency, it is difficult to compare and analyze the evaluation results. So it is critical to develop a service design evaluation systems that can evaluate the process step by step with the multidisciplinary perspectives. This study proposes the evaluation systems regarding those issues and apply to a service design project to verify the reliability and validity

    • Towards A More Inclusive Global Design Education : Student Perspectives at an International Graduate School of Design in South Korea: A Case Study

HWANG JULIE OK

      RANK : 251695

This study examines the challenges faced by international students in South Korea’s design education system, focusing on a single international graduate school as a case study. Using a mixed-methods approach that includes surveys and focus groups, the research identifies systemic barriers such as limited English-taught courses, language accessibility challenges, and insufficient career support. These barriers significantly impact international students’ academic satisfaction, integration into the local educational system, and their ability to connect with cultural and professional networks. The study culminates in a design project presented as both a student report and a strategic planning proposal, offering actionable strategies to address these issues. Key recommendations include increasing English-language course offerings, fostering intercultural collaboration among students, and implementing culturally inclusive support services that connect local and global design perspectives.
