Vol.68 No.-

After the establishment of the Kyujanggak Royal Library, bibliographies were compiled for Chinese and Korean books designated for collection. Medical books were included in the 'Medical Authors(醫家類)' category within the 'Masters(子部)' section of the Four Divisions of Books(四部). The 'Medical Authors' category, traditionally disregarded in China, began to gain importance along with 'Agriculturalists(農家)' during the compilation of the 『Complete Library of the Four Treasuries(四庫全書)』. Following this trend, Joseon placed the 'Medical Authors' category adjacent to 'Military Strategists(兵家)' and 'Agriculturalists.' However, it did not simply imitate the Chinese system but adapted it to its own circumstances. An examination of the books in the 'Medical Authors' category from the bibliographies of King Jeongjo's era reveals that books were classified as Korean or Chinese editions based on their place of publication rather than the actual author. The scope was limited to traditional Chinese medicine, excluding Chinese translations of Western medical texts. This Kyujanggak book management system was maintained until the early reign of King Gojong. However, the system began to falter by the Korean Empire era. The Four Divisions classification system collapsed, books were scattered haphazardly across shelves, and some were even lost. Meanwhile, following the opening of the ports and the implementation of the 'Enlightenment Policy,' the acceptance of Western culture was promoted, leading to an influx of Chinese-translated Western books, and medical texts were no exception. In particular, King Gojong frequently sent books collected for this purpose down to the Kyujanggak in the form of 'Naeha'(內下; royal endowments) and stored them in a library called 'Jibokjae(集玉齋)'. The bibliographies from this collection reveal a significant number of Chinese-translated Western medical books alongside medical texts from the Qing Dynasty. After stripping the Korean Empire of its diplomatic rights through the Eulsa Treaty of 1905, Imperial Japan began to organize the books of the Kyujanggak while managing the imperial family's assets. This led to the creation of the 'Imperial Library(帝室圖書)' in 1909. An examination of the medical books in the 'Masters' section of this bibliography reveals that a significant number of books listed in the previous bibliographies from the eras of King Jeongjo and King Gojong were missing. Conversely, books that were not in the earlier bibliographies appeared. This bibliography is considered quite incomplete, as it did not include, for example, the books from the Jibokjae collection. Furthermore, a look at the bibliography compiled by the Ministry of Education(學部) of the Korean Empire during this period, when it took over the Kyujanggak books, shows a transitional phase from the traditional Four Divisions system to the Western decimal classification system, and it also includes some medical books. After the Japanese colonial period began, the Investigation Bureau(取調局) in the Government-General of Joseon took control of organizing the Kyujanggak books, establishing new principles and creating a bibliography based on them. In this classification system, 'Agriculturalists,' 'Military Strategists,' and 'Medical Authors' were grouped together. An examination of the listed 'Medical Authors' books reveals a significant influx of titles not found in previous bibliographies, especially in the section for Chinese books. This included books from the Jibokjae collection as well as Chinese translations of Western medical texts. Although the bibliography's content temporarily deteriorated when the books were subsequently transferred to the Counselor's Office(參事官 分室), the project was eventually concluded with the assignment of book numbers, a reclassification process, and the publication of the 『Catalog for Old Books in the Government-General of Joseon(朝鮮總督 ...

Vol.68 No.-

This paper provides an overview of the current status and key characteristics of the Hakbong Collection of ancient documents, collected throughout the life of the late Lee Myeong-jun and entrusted to the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies at Seoul National University, and presents opinions regarding their value and utilization. The Hakbong Collection is significant in terms of data preservation, as it was collected when ancient documents scattered throughout the country were circulating in the market; this ensured that a large number of documents could be safely passed down to future generations. Furthermore, it serves as a starting point for various studies as primary source materials for examining the bureaucracy, the civil service examination system, property gifting and inheritance, the sale of fields and slaves, correspondence among the nobility, and the realities of private litigation during the Joseon Dynasty. Additionally, it is anticipated that many materials of significant importance in terms of historical records and cultural heritage will be discovered if examined in depth based on the date of creation, author, related figures, and content of the documents. Based on the basic classification and cataloging conducted to date, it is necessary to conduct an in-depth review by source unit prior to making the collection publicly available through computerized systems, such as websites. If the materials are subsequently disclosed by applying methods such as type classification or subject classification according to the Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies’ classification of ancient documents, researchers using them for academic purposes will be able to utilize the materials more effectively and advance to in-depth research.
