Impact of Zinc Stress on Biochemical and Biophysical Parameters in Coffea Arabica Seedlings

Jacqueline Oliveira dos Santos,Cinthia Aparecida Andrade,Kamila Rezende Dázio de Souza,Meline de Oliveira Santos,Isabel Rodrigues Brandão,Jose Donizeti Alves,Iasminy Silva Santos 한국작물학회 2019 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.22 No.3

Zinc is an essential micronutrient for the healthy development of plants, since its insufficient and supraoptimal doses can disrupt the metabolism and biomass production. We aimed to investigate the physiological responses of coffee seedlings to Zn deficiency and excess. Six-month-old seedlings were transferred to plastic pots containing a nutrient solution. The treatments were control (0.03 ppm), zinc deficiency (0.00 ppm), and zinc excess (0.12 ppm). The evaluations were performed in leaves and roots at the beginning of the treatments and after 30 and 60 d of treatments. Zn deficiency and excess increased the production of hydrogen peroxide, antioxidant enzymes activity, ascorbate, and lipid peroxidation contents. The imbalance in zinc nutrition reduced total chlorophyll content and increased carotenoids content throughout the experimental period. Lower biomass and proline accumulation were observed only for deficient seedlings at the end of the experiment. The characteristics analyzed showed that zinc deficiency caused greater damage to the Coffea arabica plants of (Catuai cultivar) than zinc excess.

Nitrogen Metabolism in Lactating Goats Fed with Diets Containing Different Protein Sources

      Santos, A.B.,Pereira, M.L.A.,Silva, H.G.O.,Pedreira, M.S.,Carvalho, G.G.P.,Ribeiro, L.S.O.,Almeida, P.J.P.,Pereira, T.C.J.,Moreira, J.V. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2014 Animal Bioscience Vol.27 No.5

This study aimed to evaluate urea excretion, nitrogen balance and microbial protein synthesis in lactating goats fed with diets containing different protein sources in the concentrate (soybean meal, cottonseed meal, aerial part of cassava hay and leucaena hay). Four Alpine goats whose mean body weight was $42.6{\pm}6.1kg$ at the beginning of the experiment, a mean lactation period of $94.0{\pm}9.0days$ and a production of $1.7{\pm}0.4kg$ of milk were distributed in a $4{\times}4$ Latin square with four periods of 15 days. Diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous, containing 103.0 g/kg of CP, 400 g/kg of Tifton 85 hay and 600 g/kg of concentrate. Diet containing cottonseed meal provided (p<0.05) increased excretion of urea and urea nitrogen in the urine (g/d and mg/kg of BW) when compared with leucaena hay. The diets affected the concentrations of urea nitrogen in plasma (p<0.05) and excretion of urea nitrogen in milk, being that soybean meal and cottonseed meal showed (p<0.05) higher than the average aerial part of the cassava hay. The use of diets with cottonseed meal as protein source in the concentrate in feeding of lactating goats provides greater nitrogen excretion in urine and negative nitrogen balance, while the concentrate with leucaena hay as a source of protein, provides greater ruminal microbial protein synthesis.

Citrus Pulp as a Dietary Source of Antioxidants for Lactating Holstein Cows Fed Highly Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid Diets

      Santos, G.T.,Lima, L.S.,Schogor, A.L.B.,Romero, J.V.,De Marchi, F.E.,Grande, P.A.,Santos, N.W.,Kazama, R. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2014 Animal Bioscience Vol.27 No.8

The effects of feeding pelleted citrus pulp (PCP) as a natural antioxidant source on the performance and milk quality of dairy cows fed highly polyunsaturated fatty acid (FA) diets were evaluated. Four lactating Holstein cows were assigned to a $4{\times}4$ Latinsquare. Treatments, on a dry matter (DM) basis, were i) control diet; ii) 3% soybean oil; iii) 3% soybean oil and 9% PCP and; iv) 3% soybean oil and 18% PCP. When cows fed on citrus pulp, the DM intake tended to decrease. The total tract apparent digestibility of DM and ether extract decreased when cows fed on the control diet compared to other diets. Cows fed PCP had higher polyphenols and flavonoids content and higher total ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) in milk compared to those fed no pelleted citrus pulp. Cows fed 18% PCP showed higher monounsaturated FA and lower saturated FA in milk fat compared with cows fed the other diets. The lowest n-6 FA proportion was in milk fat from cows fed control. The present study suggests that pelleted citrus pulp added to 9% to 18% DM increases total polyphenols and flavonoids concentration, and the FRAP in milk.

Fourier-Based PLL Applied for Selective Harmonic Estimation in Electric Power Systems

Santos, Claudio H.G.,Ferreira, Reginaldo V.,Silva, Sidelmo Magalhaes,Cardoso Filho, Braz J. The Korean Institute of Power Electronics 2013 JOURNAL OF POWER ELECTRONICS Vol.13 No.5

In this paper, the Fourier-based PLL (Phase-locked Loop) is introduced with a new structure, capable of selective harmonic detection in single and three-phase systems. The application of the FB-PLL to harmonic detection is discussed and a new model applicable to three-phase systems is introduced. An analysis of the convergence of the FB-PLL based on a linear model is presented. Simulation and experimental results are included for performance analysis and to support the theoretical development. The decomposition of an input signal in its harmonic components using the Fourier theory is based on previous knowledge of the signal fundamental frequency, which cannot be easily implemented with input signals with varying frequencies or subjected to phase-angle jumps. In this scenario, the main contribution of this paper is the association of a phase-locked loop system, with a harmonic decomposition and reconstruction method, based on the well-established Fourier theory, to allow for the tracking of the fundamental component and desired harmonics from distorted input signals with a varying frequency, amplitude and phase-angle. The application of the proposed technique in three-phase systems is supported by results obtained under unbalanced and voltage sag conditions.

    • Identification of protease-resistant proteins from allergenic nuts using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry

Santos, Ilyn L.,Lee, Ju-Young,Youm, Yujin,Lim, Jinkyu Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology 2013 慶北大農學誌 Vol.31 No.2

Nuts are one of the most common sources of allergies in individuals of all ages. In order for a particular protein to render an allergic reaction, it must resist proteolytic digestion by intestinal enzymes. In this study, three well-known allergenic nuts, almonds, cashew nuts, and peanuts, were used as samples, and enzyme digestion with Bacillus protease and porcine pepsin was tested. A proteomic approach using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and an MS/MS analysis was applied to visualize and identify the proteins that were resistant to enzyme digestion. Among the 150 protein spots tested, 42 proteins were assigned functions. Due to the lack of genomic databases, 41% of the identified proteins were grouped as hypothetical. However, 12% of them were well-known allergens, including AraH. The remainder were grouped as storage, enzymes, and binding proteins.

Photochemical investigation of a photochromic diarylethene compound that can be used as a wide range actinometer

      Santos, Andre Ribeiro,Ballardini, Roberto,Belser, Peter,Gandolfi, Maria Teresa,Iyerd, Vijay Mahadevan,Moggi, Luca Korean Society of Photoscience 2009 Photochemical & photobiological sciences Vol.8 No.12

The photochromic diarylethene derivative 1,2-bis(5-(4-ethynylphenyl)-2-methylthiophen-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene (1) was submitted to photochemical, thermal stability and fatigue resistance studies in acetonitrile, also to evaluate its possible application as a new actinometer. This photochromic system covers a wide spectral absorption range, with intense bands in the UV and visible regions for the open-ring and closed-ring isomers, respectively. Very high ring-closure quantum yield values were obtained, in contrast with the low ring-opening quantum yields, which are nevertheless high enough to exploit 1 as an actinometer. The procedure required to determine the photon flux of an irradiation source with this fatigue resistant compound is indeed very simple.

Classification of dental implants using supervised deep learning from dental radiographs: A scoping review

Santos-Melo Tamires,Silva Gabriela Costa da,Serrano Lizandra Esper,Santos Diana Amado Baptista dos,Teixeira Mayla Kezy Silva,Telles Daniel de Moraes 대한영상치의학회 2026 Imaging Science in Dentistry Vol.56 No.2

Purpose: This scoping review examined the evidence on the use of supervised deep learning models for the classifica- tion of dental implants using radiographic images. Materials and Methods: A preliminary search was conducted in PubMed, Google Scholar, PROSPERO, JBI Evidence Synthesis, and the Open Science Framework, identifying a small number of relevant records. A comprehensive search was subsequently performed across 7 databases using adapted strategies without filters. Studies were included if they evaluated implant classification using supervised deep learning models applied to panoramic or periapical radiographs. Studies were excluded if they did not involve implant classification, were review articles, involved children, were unavailable in full text, or did not apply artificial intelligence methods. Data extraction was conducted by 2 independent reviewers, with disagreements resolved by a third reviewer. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. Results: Of 274 records, 9 studies met the inclusion criteria. Studies published between 2020 and 2024 evaluated deep learning and machine learning approaches for dental implant identification and classification from radiographic images. A range of models was applied, predominantly convolutional neural networks. Dataset sizes ranged from 355 to 156,965 radiographs and included multiple implant brands. Few studies addressed ethical considerations related to recent data protection regulations. Conclusion: This scoping review indicates that most deep learning-based approaches to implant classification using dental radiographs primarily rely on implant brand or manufacturer as the labeling strategy. This reliance may limit model generalizability and long-term applicability due to the frequent discontinuation of implant systems. Future studies should focus on intrinsic radiographic characteristics, including macrogeometry and prosthetic connection types.

DIFFUSION OF MAGNETIC FIELD AND REMOVAL OF MAGNETIC FLUX FROM CLOUDS VIA TURBULENT RECONNECTION

      Santos-Lima, R.,Lazarian, A.,de Gouveia Dal Pino, E. M.,Cho, J. IOP Publishing 2010 The Astrophysical journal Vol.714 No.1

The diffusion of astrophysical magnetic fields in conducting fluids in the presence of turbulence depends on whether magnetic fields can change their topology via reconnection in highly conducting media. Recent progress in understanding fast magnetic reconnection in the presence of turbulence reassures that the magnetic field behavior in computer simulations and turbulent astrophysical environments is similar, as far as magnetic reconnection is concerned. This makes it meaningful to perform MHD simulations of turbulent flows in order to understand the diffusion of magnetic field in astrophysical environments. Our studies of magnetic field diffusion in turbulent medium reveal interesting new phenomena. First of all, our three-dimensional MHD simulations initiated with anti-correlating magnetic field and gaseous density exhibit at later times a de-correlation of the magnetic field and density, which corresponds well to the observations of the interstellar media. While earlier studies stressed the role of either ambipolar diffusion or time-dependent turbulent fluctuations for de-correlating magnetic field and density, we get the effect of permanent de-correlation with one fluid code, i.e., without invoking ambipolar diffusion. In addition, in the presence of gravity and turbulence, our three-dimensional simulations show the decrease of the magnetic flux-to-mass ratio as the gaseous density at the center of the gravitational potential increases. We observe this effect both in the situations when we start with equilibrium distributions of gas and magnetic field and when we follow the evolution of collapsing dynamically unstable configurations. Thus, the process of turbulent magnetic field removal should be applicable both to quasi-static subcritical molecular clouds and cores and violently collapsing supercritical entities. The increase of the gravitational potential as well as the magnetization of the gas increases the segregation of the mass and magnetic flux in the saturated final state of the simulations, supporting the notion that the reconnection-enabled diffusivity relaxes the magnetic field + gas system in the gravitational field to its minimal energy state. This effect is expected to play an important role in star formation, from its initial stages of concentrating interstellar gas to the final stages of the accretion to the forming protostar. In addition, we benchmark our codes by studying the heat transfer in magnetized compressible fluids and confirm the high rates of turbulent advection of heat obtained in an earlier study.
