This essay offers a materially grounded reading of the early modern book with a special emphasis on the extent to which the physical aspect of the book participates in the process of meaning-making through its relationship with a human agent. Recent developments in the history of reading and textual scholarship have complicated the notion and status of the book, underscoring the dynamic relationship between books and human activities. Hence I call attention to early modern books as complex material objects that not only carry considerable cultural freight but also serve as powerful media of cultural translations of human agency and identity. Looking closely at bookbinding, which is the first physical element of the book we experience and thus a tangible and immediate reminder of a book’s thingness, I scrutinize the ways in which the non-verbal performativity of the book engages with expressive selfhood and gestures toward a larger social and symbolic plentitude. This essay does not aim to advance a comprehensive account of the early modern book-as-thing and its shifting status. I nevertheless hope to foster vigorous dialogue about how we might conceptualize the materiality of the book, and by extension, the material culture in which the book is located.

Polydor company used as a material of this research is a record company in German. The company had a branch in Japan in 1920's. In 1931, korean branch was open by the company, and it began to make and produce SP records for korean music in september, 1932. Since this Polydor record contains 220 popular songs, this company has been professional for circulating them. By the result of this study, we can see that the song writer, Wang Pyong and the composer, Lee Myon-sang were active for appassional participation, making creation of popular songs. And SunWoo II-sun also took a part in making music as a singer. And then the story of the songs at that time was mostly about fare-well, missing, and sad love, etc., It explains a depressing society at that time. It's easy to fond out that by whom the song was composered and written for popular songs. But, for traditional songs it's hard to find out. And coming out of composer and writer made a new step in the modem korean history. Therefore, this research will be a good example in researching the modern korean music.

The tunic of Styela Clava (SCT) will be expected to become useful medical biomaterials because they consist of proteoglycans having the non-toxic, biogradable and high water absorbable properties. To investigate whether the regenerative cellulose films can be affected on the toxicity and biodegradation in the mice, we detected the several factors including the organ weight, the biochemical-related factors of serum and the hisotological pattern of skin tissue after the implantation of cellulose film. At first, the body weight and some organs weight did not changed between nonimplanted group and implanted group. Also, the biochemical analysis of the serum showed that the indicators for liver damage such as ALT, ALP and AST were not changed by the implantation of cellulose film. Furthermore, these films was effectively degraded under the skin of mice after 4 weeks. These results suggest that the regenerative cellulose film originated from the tunic of SCT did not had the any toxicity and effectively degraded into tissue until 4 weeks. Therefore, these materials can be used as the novel materials for developing the protect films in order to care the skin damage containing a gash and a burn.
“How strong imagination works!”: Dumb shows, Ghosts and the Early Modern Inquiry into Spectatorship
정영진 한국영어영문학회 2014 영어 영문학 Vol.60 No.1
The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to bring into focus theinsights that early modern studies of vision provide for the period’s shiftin understanding perception and its relationship with embodiment; second,to extend these insights beyond disciplinary boundaries and locateJohn Webster’s stagecraft within this changing intellectual and culturalcontext. The early modern period marked unprecedented developmentsin visual technology. The inventions and improvements in handling perspectivecast light on the problem of perception by making people awareof optical oddities and inconstancies. By tracing how art, philosophy, andliterature created, responded to, and appropriated occasions of visual fallibility,I show the extent to which both fascination and suspicion of theeye, the time-honored medium of acquiring knowledge, contributed toparadigmatic changes in early modern epistemology. I examine the historyof perspective in art as a revealing example of how theories, practices, and technologies of science and art dynamically interplayed and gaveforce to the rise of early modern discourses of sight, including skepticism,in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Then, by takinga close look at two moments from The White Devil, that is, the dumbshows in 2.2 and Isabella’s ghost in 4.1, I argue that Webster with hiscomplex stagecraft accommodates spectacles of vulnerable spectatorshipfallen into the rupture between knowledge and visibility. Staging the failurein recovering the pure observation of reality and its simulation,Webster shares the sustained early modern awareness of the problematicrelationship between perception and embodiment.
