Vol.- No.69

Kim Chang-Hyup(金昌協) is a Neo-Confucian scholar, writer, and traveler who represents Joseon in the 17th century. At the age of 21, from August 11 to September 11, 1671, he toured the Kwandong(關東) area (Mt. Geumgang and the East Sea) for one month. He was on a trip to return from a tour of Mt. Geumgang only, but at the recommendation of Kwon Se-Kyung, he expanded the tour area to the east coast. The record of the excursion at this time in a diary is 「Dong Yugi (東遊記)」. As the descriptive characteristics of 「Dong Yugi」, first point is that although Kim Chang-Hyup left 567 Chinese poetry in 「Nongamjip(農巖集)」, he did not record them in 「Dong Yugi」. The second is that 「Dong Yugi」 is composed of 12 short experiences. While Kim Chang-Hyup toured Mt. Geumgangsan(金剛山), he felt joy(興趣) in the landscape, the elegance(雅趣) in the writings of various persons, and the Emotion(情趣) in the relationship with the Buddhist monks. These feelings are felt by anyone who goes on a sightseeing, but it is difficult to unify them because they are various emotions by person. After traveling to Mt. Geumgangsan, Kim Chang-Hyup has never forgot his desire to see it again for the rest of his life, as much as to say, “As time goes by, I can't forget it, and my desire to see it again becomes more earnest than when I never saw it at all.” After that, it came to think of ways to understand nature for a long time. In addition, Kim Chang-Hyup actively searched for names written on rocks and pavilions in the excursion site, and tried to leave his name on such places. This was because these actions were both entertainment to enjoy and a way to communicate with fellow members. During his excursion to Mt. Geumgangsan, unlike previous noblemen, Kim Chang-Hyup showed an attitude in favor of Buddhism and monks rather than arguing with them about Neo-Confucianism.

Vol.- No.47

Oh Yoon-Gyeom, who went to China and Japan as an Envoy in the 17th century, recorded 『JOCHEON daily journal』 and 『DONGSA daily journal』. 『DONGSA daily journal』 is a diary of the Envoy in 1617 (The 9th year of the reign of King Gwanghae) and 『JOCHEON daily journal』 is a diary of the Envoy in 1622. (The 14th year of the reign of King Gwanghae) Focusing on these two Envoy Records, consciousness and change features of Oh Yoon-Gyeom about political, foreign relations and culture of three countries of Joseon, Ming and Japan of the North East Asia in the 17th century were reviewed. An Envoy of returning hospitality and calling back the captured Joseon people with Oh Yoon-Gyeom as the leader left Busan on July 7, 1617 with the purpose of ‘Delivery of King``s Letter’ and ‘Calling back captured Joseon people’ and returned after visiting Husimi Castle of Japan. Oh Yoon-Gyeom``s thoughts about Japan, which were revealed in this Envoy, can be examined in several points. One point is that he tried to objectify the object instead of exposing hostile feeling about Japan, Second point is that he recognized Japan as ‘confusion within stability’ and last point is that he could achieve some success of calling back captured Joseon people (321 people) in consequence as he tried for releasing captured Joseon people as a realistic plan instead of Japan ‘courtesy and justice’ as his understanding about Japan became profound. Besides, he also confirmed the fact that literature and culture were growing in Tsushima and other regions during the Envoy to Japan. Oh Yoon-Gyeom showed interest in historic sites during his Envoy to Ming Dynasty and this became a momentum to understand central position and meaning of Ming Dynasty . Through the Envoy, he could confirm ‘Prosperity within confusion’ Ming Dynasty was confronting at that time. And he also recognized real sad reality of that time that a interpreter, who were obliged to take an important role in foreign diplomacy with Ming Dynasty, did not play the role properly.

Vol.- No.31

As the representative performance that was locally generated and then polished at the royal court by means of good responses of audiences in the Choseon Dynasty(朝鮮), there was Hangjangmu(項莊舞). Hangjangmu is a dance play with dialogues that had been performed as a miscellaneous play at Seoncheon(宣川, Pyunganbuk-Do(平安北道) at the year of Gyeyu(癸酉) (1873) of King Gojong(高宗) and then introduced into the royal court. As Hangjangmu was introduced as a court votive offering in the latter period of the Choseon Dynasty, there were new changes in the performance. In this study, the researcher intended to clarify that Hangjangmu was not fixed as a traditional performance type but was changed as performances with the modern dramatic elements in the course of groping for new changes. Hangjangmu started as combination of dances and music like sword dance(劍舞). As the result of contacting with audiences, these performances reflected their requests, and Hangjangmu became to emphasize dialogues instead of songs in order to deliver meaning concretely. In the course, changes of styles demonstrate the course of changing from traditional entertaining to a play. But Hangjangmu make a composite personality as combination of dances and music performances.

Vol.- No.87

This study examines the significance of Yun Gi’s life and the meaning of his heritage spaces through his legacy poetry. Yun Gi viewed travels and heritage not as simple journeys but as a process of discovering Jinyo(眞遊). Jinyo refers to a journey of true experience that involves direct engagement through the feet and eyes, followed by an intellectual and spiritual awakening. During the 18th century, Pungnyu culture in Han-yang flourished, but Yun Gi distanced himself from this culture, seeking travels and heritage with deeper significance. His heritage is defined by three spaces: “Space of Enjoyment and History,” “Space of Garden and Restoration,” and “Space of Seeking Truth and Reverence.” The “Space of Enjoyment and History” is centered on his travels in Ganghwa Island and heritage in Manisan. These travels were not only a means to forget the troubles of reality through enjoyment (興) but also a process of discovering the historical meaning of the heritage spaces. The “Space of Garden and Restoration” is based on his heritage at Yongmun Mountain. For him, Yanggeun and Yongmun Mountains functioned as gardens, where he sought mental restoration. The “Space of Seeking Truth and Reverence” is related to his reverence for Geumgangsan (Mount Geumgang). Yun Gi viewed Geumgangsan not as a mythical land of immortals but as a space for true exploration (Jinyo). Although his frail health and bureaucratic duties prevented him from visiting Geumgangsan, he sought to discover Jinyo in Dobongsan. In this context, Yun Gi’s heritage spaces were not mere travel destinations. They were spaces to forget the troubles of reality through enjoyment (Manisan on Ganghwa Island), to seek mental restoration (Yongmun Mountain), and to discover the true nature of the world (Geumgangsan and Dobongsan).

Vol.0 No.57

One of the methods to confirm the local performance characteristics in the Joseon Dynasty is through reference to the contents recorded in the record of envoys' visit. In the regions where envoys stayed while they were going to the frontier, Jeonbyeolyeon (a farewell party) was held by the concerned government office. These regions had sufficient economical ability to present various performances during Jeonbyeolyeon(餞別宴) and having a Kyobang(敎坊), they even sent selected official dancing girls to inner and outside festivals of the Royal Court. At the time of envoys' visit either to Japan or China, except for special situations, envoys stayed at certain regions and the government office at concerned region held Jeonbyeolyeon. Therefore, lodgement areas during envoys' visit were destined. As envoys' roads, there were mainly 'Chungju', 'Andong', 'Youngcheon', Gyungju' and 'Busan', but in the record of envoys' visit, only Jeonbyeolyeon and performances at 'Andong', 'Youngcheon' and 'Busan' were recorded. However, because local performance characteristics began to be concretely recorded after the middle of the 18th century, it is not easy to confirm concrete performance characteristics during envoy' visit for communicative purpose of which only records of Jeonbyeolyeon before 1764 remain. Through the record of envoys' visit for communicative purpose, we can only confirm that there were different performance characteristics according to the 'banquet' valuing ceremony much and 'private feast' centering on elegance. On 'the Euiju High Road' as a road for envoys' visit to China, there was Jeonbyeolyeon mainly at Hwangju, Pyungyang, Anju, Seoncheon and Euiju. But because envoys' visit to China continued to the end of the 19th century, it is possible to examine concrete characteristics and changes of local performances. Among performances recorded in the record of envoys' visit, we can examine changes of Seonyurak at 'Hwangju' and the fact that performances were generally done at 'Pyungyang' as the central base for envoy's roads in the Joseon Dynasty. And we can see changes of sword dances and Hangjangmu at 'Seoncheon' and aspects of Masangjae performance well at 'Euiju'.

Vol.29 No.-

When we look at the ancient history of Korea, there was a period of having done activities as a maritime nation. However, by the time of Joseon Dynasty, Ming Dynasty’s "Haegeum policy (prohibition of the sea)” was accepted and Korea lost its status as a maritime nation and became a nation that was oriented toward the continent. In this age, the way for intellectuals perceive the "sea" was reading rather than experience, and was more dependent on ideas than reality. Since the sea was not a place of life in the Joseon Dynasty, it was an object of appreciation(玩賞) rather than a place to support real life. The intellectuals recorded their actual experience at sea through the records of envoy"s visit and the PyoHaeRok (record of drifting into the sea). Envoys’ visits were official events with long history. For the visit, envoys have traveled to China and Japan through sea routes. At that time, sea route was both ‘a fearful and unfamiliar road" accompanied with death, and also "a path of desire" to experience the civilization of China and the fairyland of Japan. For the Korean intellectuals, the sea was a space giving fear, but it also showed various forms according to the subject, time, and viewpoint of recording. The records of envoy"s visit recorded an ideological sea rather than an actual sea. The records of envoys’ visit presented a beautiful world to meet after overcoming the fear and recorded a way to overcome the fear rather than recording the fear of the sea. The fairyland during envoys’ visit to Japan was the land of Japan where they landed and it was also a different expression of joy after overcoming fear, and during envoys’ visit to the Ming Dynasty, it was civilization world. The sea was a huge wave that swallowed the fleet of the envoys’ ship and it was also space providing an opportunity to reflect on themselves in fear. The sea was also a space of communicating for meeting and separation between the living and the dead people while being located on the way to "civilization and the fresh world".

Vol.6 No.-

The researcher intends to study Hong, Chang-Han’s 『Yeonhaengilki(燕行日記)』 which recorded envoy’s visit to China in the middle of the 18th century that was called “the era of peace”. On Nov. 5, 1740, Hong, Chang-Han started envoy’s visit as a recording official at winter solstice and returned. on Apr. 6. 1740 and 1741 were times when King Youngjo(英祖) announced ‘KyungShin CheoBun(庚申處分)’ and ‘ShinYooDaeHun(辛酉大訓)’ and thereby ‘ShinImEuiRi(辛壬義理)’ asserted by Noron(老論) became to be recognized. Hong, Chang-Han’s(洪昌漢) 『Yeonhaengilki(燕行日記)』 recorded contents from Jan. 2 at Beijing to Apr. 6 when he returned. And contents from Jan. 29 to Feb. 1 were recorded in 「Yeonkyungpungsok(燕京風俗)」. In the form of daily records, it adds miscellaneous records presenting Cheong’s systems, civilization, customs and etc. fragmentarily. In recording daily records, he shows an attitude trying to present ‘confirmation of facts through direct and indirect experience’ and ‘delivery of objective and exact information’. And he records experience of China by means of ‘comparison with familiar ‘status of things of Joseon(朝鮮)’. On the basis of extensive and scholastic contents recorded in the daily records, the researcher examined the characteristics of 『Yeonhaengilki(燕行日記)』 centering on ‘Neo-Confucian Philosophical Recognition and China’, ‘Diplomatic Stability and Economic Exchanges’, ‘Effort for Collecting Information and Limitation to Exchanges’ and ‘Interest in Magic Arts and Accomplishments’. Unlikely as Neo-Confucian Philosophical Recognition, at that time, there was much interest in trade and magic artsㆍaccomplishments and etc. and interest in persons of talent attending entertainment became concrete.

Vol.0 No.57

Yeongcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do is an important area for envoy’s visit for communicative purpose. While the envoys arrived at Yeongcheon and received a farewell party, the envoys and the general people had unusual experiences. here Yeongcheon's place identity has been created. Yeongcheon's farewell party is a combination of annual party, Masangjae (horse martial art) and Chinese poetry interchange. Although there were separate buildings of Joyanggak Pavilion and guesthouses for performing the farewell party, they became to have the same meaning as a place for performing the farewell party. In the records of envoy’s visit, Joyanggak Pavilion appeared as a place for awakening poetry to the envoys for communicative purpose, event place of the farewell party, pavilion for performance of Masangjae, and the place for checking the martial arts of the military officers, etc. In the front yard of Joyanggak Pavilion, there was a horse martial art (Masangjae) performance, and the people who watched the performance became to recognize the culture of Seoul. The people flocked from various places when they heard news of envoys for communicative purpose arriving at Yeongcheon and watched the performances. Since Masangjae performance started with the invitation of General Shogunate of Japan, Masangjaein, the military officers who belonged to the Hunryeondogam (military camp) participated in the it. Although the soldiers who have received special training performed, Masangjae became to have merely the character of playfulness not martial arts. For this reason, the performances of Masangjae (horse martial arts) in Yeongcheon were distinguished from horse riding which was performed by the Gisaeng in Uiju area. In case of the farewell party in Yeongcheon, each role was divided in such ways as Gyeongju for the music and Andong for Gisaeng. And for this performances, people in various regions around Yeongcheon gathered up ability. These phenomena lasted until the last envoy’s visit for communicative purpose in 1811. Yeongcheon became to have the meaning as a space for the envoys for communicative purpose.
