Alexander Pope : "自然"의 詩人 Poet of Nature

From ancient times to the neo-classical age, the concept of Nature was one of the central problems of literary concern. Originally, it was a cosmological concept, but it became more and more human, shedding its conceptual nature, till, in the eighteenth century, it was a social ethos implicitly accepted by all members of society. Nature came to mean practically everything which was true, good, beautiful, sensible, civilized. Those poets who best conformed to that ethos were the most successful spokesmen of society. Alexander Pope was one of them. To him also, Nature meant not so much a abstract idea as something indispensable in every aspect of social life. It was almost his idiosyncrasy, if we may use that 'romantic' word in the case of a poet who observed, thought and write from the viewpoint of Nature, or 'the universal actions and passions of men'. He was sometimes unsuccessful when he ceased to be Natural and tried to form into a system what he implicitly believed about Nature, as is shown in Essay on Man and Moral Essays. The tender sentiment of Elosia on Abelard was refined by the light of Nature. Thus attaining an admirable objectivity. Of course he is best known as satirist. His satires attacked the 'un-Natural' from the firm ground of Nature which he guarded most earnestly. The Dunciad would be reduced to a set of abuses of his contemporaries if we overlook the passionate anxiety with which he upheld Nature. Finally, I should like to add ; his poetry is still living because what was Natural to him is essentialy natural to us.

한국산 홍색비황광합성세균의 분리 및 동정

한국의 경기도 일대의 하천으로부터 광합성 세균 54균주를 분리하였고, 이들 중 Van Niel(1944)과 Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology(1989)의 결과에 따라 KS-200, 204, 205, 213, 222, 223, 224, 227, 240, 241, 242, 244, 252는 Rhodopseudomonas blastica로 KS-215, 216, 249는 Rhodobacter capsulatus로 KS-209, 211, 212, 232, 237, 248은 Rhodopseudomonas rutila로 동정하였다. Fifty four strains of photosynthetic purple nonsulfur bacteria were isolated from Kyonggi area in Korea. According to the Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology(1989), strains were identified as Rhodopseudomonas blastica, Rhodopseudomonas rutila, and Rhodobacter capsulatus.

Eliot의 Collected Poems 1909~1935에는 Ariel Poems라는 소제목하에 'Journey of the Magi, 'A song for Simeon,' 'Animula,' 'Marina'등 네 편의 시가 수록되어 있다 제작년대는 1930년경, 그러니까 Eliot이 영국교회에 귀의하던 당시이다 따라서 종교적 색채가 짙은 작품들이다 'Ariel'이란 시제부터가 '제단'이라는 뜻을 가지고 있다. 그러나 이 시들에다 종교시라는 제한적인상을 주는 이름은 붙이는 것은 좀 위험하다 종교시는 교훈시와 더불어 재미없는 설교를 담고 있을 뿐인 pseudo-poetry로서 백안시 당할 염려가 있을 뿐더러, 이 작품들은 엄격히 말해서 종교시도 아니다. 이 작품들은 성실하지만 유약한 인간이 겪는, 거의 주체할 수 없을 정도로 강열한 정신적 체험을 말하고 있다. 그것은 지극히 인간적인 체험으로서 오히려 선종교적 체험이라고 할 수 있다. Eliot의 시인적명성이 의존되어 있는 'Prufrock'에서 'HoIlolw Men'에 이르는 작품들은 모두 현대인의 조잡, 사말, 무가치함을 주제로 하며 현대의 depression에다 날카로운 표현을 주었다. 그러나 주제가 그러니 만치, 가슴이 "후련"하든가 "소박하게 아름다운" 느낌을 주지는 못한다 그에게서 그런 시원한 시, (Eliot 특유의 "시원함"말이다) 또는 아름다운 시를 발견하려면 'Ash Wednesday'나 'Ariel Poems'로 와야 한다. 그 뒤의 Four Quarters의 단계로 넘어오면 또 다른 새로운 종류의 depression이 생긴다. 초기의 depression의 시만 읽으면 Eliot의 '크기'를 무척 틀리게 이해하기 쉽다. 그러한 의미에서도 'Ariel Poems'는 잘 읽어둘 필요가 있다. 더욱이 초기작품들은 어딘가 모르게 'Ash Wednesday'와 'Ariel Poems'의 정신적 자세를 지향하고 있다고 생각된다. 예컨데 Think at last We have not reached conclusion, when I stiffen in a rented house 라 말하는 'Gerontion'의 늙은이는 지금의 상태가 아닌 어떤 참다란 결말을 희구하고 있는 것이다. 이와같은 어떤 가치있는 정신적변화에의 희구는 그의 초기시 전체에 암시되어 있음을 본다. Eliot은 depression에서 시작해서 depression으로 끝나는 허무주의자는 절대로 아니다.

ELISA 방법에 의한 홍색비유황광합성세균의 Lipopolysaccharides 사이의 혈청학적 유연관계

홍색비유황광합성균의 lipopolysaccharide에 대한 혈청학적유연관계가 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay 방법에 의해 조사되어졌다. Rhodobacter capsulatus는 Rhodopseudomonas palustris, Rhodobacter sphaeroides와 혈청학적 유연관계가 있는 것으로 나타났고, Rhodopseudomonas palustris는 Rhodopseudomonas viridis와 유연관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. Rhodospirillum rubrum과 Rhodocyclus tenuis는 어느 종과도 혈청학적 유연관계가 없는 것으로 나타났다. The serological relationships among lipopolysaccharides from purple nonsulfur photosynthetic bacteria, 4 genera, 11 species, was investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Rhodobacter capsulatus showed serological relationship with Rhodopseudomonas palustris and Rhodobacter sphaeroides. Rhodopseudomonas palustris showed serological relationship with Rhodopseudomonas viridis but Rhodospirillum rubrum and Rhodocyclus tenuis didn't show serological relationship with other species.

한국어 사전 제작을 위한 대규모 말뭉치의 구성 및 분석

A recent linguistic research trend is focussing on the information about the lexis in positive, concrete ways. Crucial to such a project is the 'dictionary', which, however, in the ordinary format as now available, is far from being detailed and structured enough for applications in computational linguistic engineering. The present research group have adopted the 'corpus linguistic' method, conceptually and practically very different from main-stream theoretical linguistic methods. Whereas theoretical linguistics is based on what may be termed 'explanatory adequacy', corpus linguistics is based on 'observatory adequacy'. This represents the turn from the individual's or a group of similar-minded individuals' linguistic intuition to the probabilistic interpretation of the language uses of the multitude on statistical grounds. Machine readable corpora of natural language have many uses, of which the most important for us is the compilation of a monolingual dictionary of contemporary Korean. The Lexicographical Center of Yonsei University has built a text base of about 20 million ojol, or word-forms. Hitherto word-forms as such have been given only cursory attention by Korean theoretical linguists ; but they are the most prominent features confronting the computational lexicographers and HLP specialists. The frequency list of word-forms prepared by the Center is the first of its kind in the country based on the monitor corpus of 2.3 million tokens. Each of the word-forms has to be assigned to an appropriate lemma. Since Korean is an agglutinative language, lemmatizing word-forms involves far different engineering than in such a relatively simple inflectional language as English. Theoretically an ordinary Korean verb can have more than three hundred different forms. One particular problem is that a word-form from a category may have exactly the same form from a different one, an eye-opening fact of the language that became apparent only when the corpus was processed electronically Ambiguity and disambiguation have moved onto a completely different linguistic plane. The Center has developed a well-workable tool for analyzing word-forms into the stem and the elements that indicate grammatical relations. It is an essential tool for processing the large-scale corpus for our lexicographical prefects. Appended are 1) the list of printed material that went into building the Yonsei Corpus II (a corpus collected on the basis of the University Library lendings), 2) the frequency list of words based on 2.3 million word-forms, and 3) two examples of the "Key Word in Context"(KWIC).

Alexander Pope is treated in this essay as a poet in its original sense-a maker. The poetic technique of Pope may be characterized as "correctness." His "correctness" appears in his creative imitation of classical genres. His easy style is seen as a revulsion from the "artificiality" of the preceding 'metaphysical school,' and on this premise the literary views of the two periods are compared. The prime point of comparison here is between imagery for its own sake and imagery for illustration. To guard against any misunderstanding that Pope wrote simple, superficial poetry, passages from the Dunciad are cited in which words appear with many shades of nuance. His "correctness" of languages is further pointed up by classifying important patterns of statement in heroic meter. "Correctness" of his language is also discussed in connection with his choice of apt words : an explication of poetic diction and its purpose is made part of this discussion. Pope's influence may have been an unfortunate one on his imitators, yet he himself maintained a superb workmanship, Pope did not believe in any special anthology of poetic diction; he was convinced that genre determined diction and demonstrated this in his poetry. In his satires Pope employed colloquialisms with freedom and precision. His use of "colour-words" receives special mention here. An inseparable blend is achieved between meter and content and therefore his rhythm proves to be intergrated with his theme. "Certain niceties" in versification which he expounded in his letter to Walsh are illustrated by quoted passages. To Pope, sound was a subsidiary medium to ensure accuracy of transmission. His effective use of rhyme was intellectual, often approaching the effect of pun. Pope was also a poet with a "fire" who could "catch a grace beyond the reach of art," a true poet who had mastered, and thereby transcended, the often disparaged poetic rules.

서양사람들이 쓴 번역론을 읽노라면 으레 "번역자는 반역자"(Traduttore tradittore)라는 오랜 이탈리아의 경구를 만나게 된다. '번역자'라는 뜻을 가지 '트라두토레'가 '반역자'라는 뜻을 가진 '트라디토레'와 홀소리 하나만 틀리고 발음이 같아서 멋진 경구 노릇을 하는데, 희한하게도 우리말에서도 '번역'과 '반역'은 홀소리 하나만 다를 뿐인데다가 이탈리아 말보다 훨씬 짧아서 더 멋진 경구가 될 수 있다. 다만 번역에 관한 논의가 많지 않는 우리 나라에서는 그 멋진 경구가 자주 인용되지는 않는다.
